Red Nose Day Recognizes Kids Living in Poverty. Article “The Rich Get Smart. The Poor Get Technology: The New Digital Divide in School Choice” Highlights Part of the Problem.

By B.N. Frank

Today is Red Nose Day.  It is unfortunate that so many children are living in poverty in the U.S. and around the world.  There are many reasons for this.  One is educational.

How does technology play a role in this?  No one may have explained it better than Dr. Screen-Free Mom in her 2017 article “The Rich Get Smart.  The Poor Get Technology:  The New Digital Divide in School Choice.

She wasn’t the first and she won’t be the last to emphasize that tech inventors – including the late Steve Jobs – have been limiting their own kids’ use of technology and sending them to private low-tech schools for several years already.  This is while everyone else has been “sold” on the idea that public schools need to be “high tech” and kids need to start learning on it at very young ages.  Even Sesame Street has been promoting tech use by wee ones.

This high-tech marketing to public schools is not going away despite all the evidence it has made it harder to for kids to learn.  The research speaks for itself.  Parents, teachers, even employers are witnessing this first hand.  Many of today’s public school students and recent graduates are now in danger of raising their future children in poverty because they aren’t getting a good education.

Doctors, medical associations and scientists have also been warning about how heavy screen use is hurting children in ways other than educationally.  Articles with research links include:

Tax dollars continue to be spent so public schools can be “high tech” while tech inventors have known all along that kids shouldn’t use it much, if at all.  How do you like them apples?
