Legislators Concerned about DoD Wanting to Own 5G Network

By B.N. Frank

American opposition to 5G continues to increase for a variety of reasons (see 1, 2) in addition to biological and environmental risks (see 1, 2, 3, 4). In fact, federal agencies and credible experts warn 5G will threaten jobs, national security, public safety, and weather forecasting accuracy (see 1, 2).

Deployment has been banned, delayed, and stopped worldwide due to serious health and safety risks. Nevertheless, in August, Trump reintroduced his proposal to have a national 5G plan and the Department of Defense (DoD) seems to want to be in charge with Google assisting them. Some organizations aren’t happy about this because this violates free market principles. Apparently, some legislators aren’t happy about this either.

Pentagon Expanding 5G Efforts, DOD Official Says

The Pentagon will also be releasing guidance on securing the microelectronics supply chain, according to Defense Undersecretary for Acquisition and Sustainment Ellen Lord.

The Pentagon is pushing ahead on a variety of 5G projects with more proposal requests on the way despite concerns over what role the Defense Department should have in building and controlling 5G networks.

Defense Undersecretary for Acquisition and Sustainment Ellen Lord said Tuesday the DOD will issue two 5G broad agency announcements in early 2021. The first BAA will be for 5G security prototyping and experimentation, and the second will be “for more fundamental research and development into beyond 5G technologies,” Lord said at a MITRE Corporation event launching a new 5G consortium.

Lord’s pre-recorded remarks come after some of the Pentagon’s requests for information on 5G have raised eyebrows among lawmakers, Nextgov reported last month. GOP lawmakers including Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., and Democrats including Reps. Frank Pallone, D-N.J., and Rep. Mike Doyle, D-Pa., objected to language in one solicitation suggesting DOD is considering owning and operating its own 5G network.

On Tuesday, Lord painted the Pentagon as more of a champion of industry 5G efforts than a usurper, particularly as it pertains to setting security standards for the technology. She also enumerated some military technology applications she sees as dependent on 5G, including drones and autonomous vehicles. 5G is a technology that will transform military operations by facilitating movement of data across a complex web of sensors and systems, Lord said.

High-speed internet CAN be achieved without 5G AND Americans have actually already paid for it. However, according to Verizon and now the DoD – the push for 5G seems to be more about other stuff that many experts say isn’t safe – like Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) (see 1, 2) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Not only that – the DoD now seems to want to control the whole Electromagnetic Spectrum.

In 2019, telecom executives gave U.S. congressional testimony that they had NO independent scientific evidence that 5G was safe. Since 2018 there have been reports of people and animals experiencing symptoms and illnesses where 5G has been installed (see 1, 2, 3, 4).

Of course, other sources of wireless emit harmful radiation too. Last year, the World Health Organization cautioned that high levels of Electromagnetic Radiation exposure (aka “Electrosmog”) could lead to health issues in a significant portion of the population.

Other 5G warnings include that can cause base stations to overheat AND requires 2-3X more energy to operate than 4G. None of that will make America great.
