There’s A New Battlefield; It’s In Digital Technology

By Catherine J. Frompovich

Here is a new tech term to try to wrap your mind around: “digital grenades.”

According to Tim Johnson, author of ‘Preparing the battlefield’: Hackers implant digital grenades in industrial networks published June 27, 2018, they are cyber weapons that can “turn off power grids, derail trains, cause offshore oil rigs to list, turn petrochemical plants into bombs and shut down factories.”

According to Robert M. Lee, founder and chief executive at the cybersecurity firm Dragos in Hanover, Maryland, his firm tracks and charts the activities of foreign teams planning industrial sabotage.

Lee predicts the battlefield of the future will become sabotage wars which attack a country’s infrastructure based in and using digital technology.  It is my opinion no country is in those crosshairs more than the United States.  Let’s face it, the U.S. really is not liked much outside its own borders; we are considered an “aggressor country” [1-2].

The ‘genesis’ for such new battlefields was launched, according to Tim Johnson, when

U.S. and Israeli cyberwarriors blazed the trail on industrial cyber sabotage when they used the Stuxnet digital worm to cause centrifuges at Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility to spin out of control and shatter, infli U.S. and Israeli cyberwarriors blazed the trail on industrial cyber sabotage when they used the Stuxnet digital worm to cause centrifuges at Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility to spin out of control and shatter, inflicting a major setback on Iran’s efforts to enrich uranium to power nuclear weapons and reactors.

[Could that be considered something akin to the start of the nuclear war era when the U.S. bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945?]

Malicious malware and computer codes do the dirty work of causing havoc and destruction, even without a single missile or piece of ordnance being fired!  The world of digital technology needs to be re-evaluated for many more reasons than I can cite here.

One of Lee’s concerns is possible attacks on the U.S. power grid, “a decentralized system that comprises more than 3,000 power companies. Any regional outage could cause distress, and even fatalities, depending on length.”

Here’s where I must jump in with my two-cents-worth.

The Energy Policy Act of 2005, Section 1252 Smart Metering (Public Law 109-58) and power companies have no one to blame about the country’s power grids’ vulnerabilities, in my opinion, because they have given cyber criminals the very tool by which to take down the grid system, in part or its entirety.  That tool is the AMI Smart Meter, which is being retrofitted on to every structure in the U.S. which uses electricity.

AMI Smart Meters are extremely porous systems since they operate on microwave technology using many networks to relay information.  That makes them highly vulnerable to hack attacks, which no one designing them apparently realized could happen, since science and technology are so gung-ho about “we can do it, so let’s do it” rather than stepping back and assessing the short- and long-term effects for national security; citizens’ personal safety and security in the sanctity of their homes; environmental impacts; and especially for adverse health effects affecting electromagnetic hypersensitive people, which now is estimated to affect between 2 and 5 percent of the general population—globally!

There’s an unimaginable consumer love affair with technology, especially microwave generated platforms that just may wind up like many marriages: can’t live with the bastard, so let me get rid of it.
