Take Your Children Out of Government Schools

Many Americans are speaking about removing their children from government-run schools and finding alternatives to an increasingly failing system. In lieu of the recent rash of school shootings, many parents feel that moving their children to another educational venue will help to protect them from crazed, lone gunman who are on psychotropic medications and are seeking to do harm to our children while attending school in gun free zones with no protection. In a few isolated incidences, this may be true.

However, school shootings are such an isolated event, I am not sure how to protect against students other than by having armed guards on every campus in America.

Aside from school violence, there are some other very compelling reasons that parents may want to consider when deciding where and how to educate their child. This is the first in a multi-part series which will clearly delineate the reasons why those in the know will never let their child darken the doors of the nation’s government schools.

Many American government run schools are largely becoming bastions of ignorance and underachievement. In short, many schools are not doing their job. School districts across America flirt with every new educational fad, most of which most are scientifically unproven when it comes to positively improving the academic performance of students, thus, resulting in an enormous waste in tax dollars. Subsequently, much is made of reforming the schools and improving student performance.

On the surface, reforming the public schools is indeed needed when one considers that:
  • Only 43 percent of all U.S. high school students have any idea the Civil War was fought in the 19th century.
  • ·More than 65% of all U.S. high school students cannot find Great Britain on a map.
  • Twelve percent of U.S. high school students cannot find the United States on a map.
  • More than 25% of all U.S. high school students thought that Christopher Columbus made his famous voyage across the Atlantic Ocean after the year 1750.
  • About 33% of all U.S. high school students do not know that the Bill of Rights guarantees freedom of speech, religion and due process.
  • Only 55% of all U.S. students can name the Vice-President.
Yes, government schools are doing their job. They are producing students who are educated enough to greet you at Walmart, but too stupid to question authority with any meaningful resolve. Government schools are perpetuating a state of perpetual idiocracy.

What are parents to do about the epidemic underachievement of our government-educated children? The short answer appears to be move. Move your children out of the government-run schools. Or perhaps, move your children totally out of the country. This is not an outrageous statement when one considers that students in Latvia, Chile and Brazil are making gains in academics three times faster than American students  and those in Portugal, Hong Kong, Germany, Poland, Liechtenstein, Slovenia, Colombia and Lithuania are improving at twice the rate states a recently published by Harvard University’s Program on Education Policy and Governance.

The Harvard researchers estimate that the educational gains made by students in those 11 countries equate to about two years of learning.

The Harvard study found no relevant correlation between increasing the per-pupil spending and gains in test scores. In 2009, the U.S. spent more than $10,000 per student, ranging from $6,356 in Utah to $18,126 in New York.  Utah graduates a higher percentage of its students than does New York. Yet, school funding is the number reason given by government officials to support the need to impose a property tax on American citizens. Property tax is one of the planks of the Communist Party.

Eric Rudner (1999) analyzed the test scores of over 20,000 American homeschooled students and found them to be exceptionally high with the median scores of homeschoolers placing in the 70th to 80th percentile. This is a mean difference of about 25% between homeschooled children and children educated in the government schools. Twenty five percent equates to three grade levels. Do you remember the Harvard study in which our foreign competitors were two grade levels ahead of American schools. The message is clear, close the government schools and home school the children.

Government schools are increasingly propagandizing our children. For example, the new unproven religion being worshipped in the government schools is environmentalism and global warming. Oops, I meant to say climate change, not global warming. I almost forgot that the global warming crowd changed their name when they got caught committing scientific fraud three years ago from hacked emails at East Anglia University in which researchers admitted, through their hacked emails, that global warming was a hoax. Yet, this is the new religion of the American educational system and the facts be damned.

The government schools are conditioning our children to accept a lower standard of living and to pay tribute to the global elite through carbon taxes. Universities like Arizona State University are now offering graduate degrees in sustainability based upon this pseudoscience. It is interesting to note that the President of Arizona State University is CFR member, Michael Crow. Crow is also an ex-CIA operative. This is just one small example of who is running the government schools at the supposed elite level.

One of the more compelling reasons to home school your children is because parents do not want their children going to school with this guy…

And most reasonable parents certainly do not want their children obtaining their world view from this guy….

So people who don't agree with your world view don't get to comment.....it's just that you are what you claim to be against. Keep an open mind about climate change. Mother Nature gets the last laugh.

This read was a waste of time and intellectually limited.

Mr. Hodges, I find your article informative and consider it a "keeper" as I am beginning my sojourn into the world of Home Schooling.

Mr. Hodges, I'm not impressed with the status quo either. But your alternative is even more frightening to consider. "home-schooled"---by whom?? The average parent I encounter has neither the time, the patience, nor the ability to train their dog properly, let alone educate their offspring. Your credentials in psychology, statistics, mental health, politics and basketball do little to impress. Your writing for the AZ Republic does even less. A newspaper I would not even put as a litter-box liner for the cat crap, sorry. If you had even an iota of understanding concerning the geological record, then you would not be so dismissive of the need to recognize the massive fluctuations in the temperature of the earths surface over millions of years. Neither would you be so narrow minded concerning the need to take an environmentalist over-view with regard to the total inter connected relationship of all parts of earths systems and life forms. Activist Post is one of the best sites I read on a regular basis. This article, however was one of the most irrelevant pieces of ignorant crap that I have read on any site in 2012.

All by design. Here in Oregon a law was passed in 1923 that stated all government or public schools will have a full course study of the Constitution, State & Federal, beginning in 8th grade all the way through 4 levels of college if one chooses to continue into college.
ORS 336:057 &067 To this day, this has not been implemented or enforced. Isn't that special.
We have thousands of drones who have signed an oath that they don't even know the 1st amendment.
What we call education is in reality, (Orwellian) indoctrination & training to be good little drones for the corporations.

Get your children out of government, (regime) everything.

Good one. All one has to do these days to verify the accuracy of this article is do what I've done since the Sandy Hook tragedy. Read the responses to the hundreds of MSM articles on the subject: a truly alarming number of people out there cannot read, write, understand the basic arithmetic used in arguments, or grasp the fundamentals of logic. Common sense has been supplanted by ignorance-driven emotion.

It certainly should shock no one that such a large percentage of our nation appears more than willing to abandon the principles upon which our freedoms are founded. They obviously aren't taught in our schools.

I look forward to further articles in this series. Perhaps the next one will address the psychotropic drugging of American youth by an out-of-control pharmaceutical industrial complex.

I agree totally and completely with this article! I realized this back in 1990, and homeschooled one of my children just fine. Too many, way too many parents expect the government to do the educating FOR them. I work in the public government run schools. I have first person insight into the system. This article states the truth, Good luck America! Time will tell, as it continues to do. Do you know what I know? Ask me!

To Anon @ 7:01

You sound like a dismissive pseudo-intellectual, brainwashed for decades. Never mind Climate-gate and related scandals. You are correct, sadly to say, that most parents don't have the patience nor time to do it. You offer no solutions, just insults. Who's the one here really spewing irrelevant pieces of irrelevant crap?

My pastor has always said parents should take their children out of government schools. Thankfully he was able to home school all of his eight children.
I agree young people should not be around characters such as those in the article nor should they adopt world views like our current president, nor any of the previous ones because the globalist agenda just didn't start with Obama; it's been going on for centuries.
Now they're going for broke and seem desperate to implement their plans quickly.

Watch that Obama video...The 'teleprompter' tells him when to pause, when to place his finger by his eye. A FRAUD...He has no heart felt sympathy, no wavering voice. Acting, told to make certain gestures at the right time. He's after our 2nd Amendment rights.

We do a sort of homeschool with our two kids. First due to violence in the schools, second due to bureaucratic nonsense which never seemed to end, and thirdly-- my kids could do WAY more than what they were being taught!

So we do a charter virtual school through the county. My twelve year old is now taking 9th grade classes with one college(AP) class and my 6th grader is already starting 7th grade less than halfway through the year.

On the side we do a lot of supplementation; almost a Montessori-type set up after their regular schooling is done. Unless we have our open discussions and DO something with the information they're learning they forget it because they see that it's not relevant to them. We add to the information they're learning with real life encounters.

It's really about being proactive as a parent, knowing what they're being taught, and putting your foot down about what YOU know they need to learn. It IS hard. It DOES take energy and effort. You can't let them get lazy; push them ahead!!! If you don't want to have brain-dead asshole kids then you have to do something different than what is being offered now by the government or even private schools, which are getting almost as bad as government funded schools.

I pick up reading lists from our local library based on the grade level they're in. They read those books PLUS many others that I think they'll need or will enjoy. Then .... we talk about them! (I read the books first.) They get to see that I'm interested in what they're doing, not just a "Honey, how was your day?" "Fine. Whatever. Boooooring." See, that's crap right there. You have to get in the educational trenches with your kids to have any kind of impact on them at all.

Otherwise, you are just that 'boring parent' to them. But if you engage them in active educational pursuits then you are teaching them about life itself-- to not just accept what one book or what one person says; to get out there and find MORE references and MORE input about topics they find intriguing. One thing leads to another and those wild tangents they'll take you on can be eye opening for you both. Make it a mutual learning experience, not just 'their' education.

What was really the straw that broke the camel's back for us concerning public brick-and-mortar schooling were all the arguments I'd get into with my kids about the quality of work they thought was ok to hand in to their teacher. Illegible trash. It wasn't ok with me but it obviously was with the teachers. You can't fight the teachers because they end up treating you like you're an idiot and your precious little child can do no wrong. BULLSHIT! Children are TAUGHT how to hand in quality work.

Continued:

Once I brought them home and began really enforcing quality work they straightened right up. If they get in a bad mood and try to hand in trash their grade actually reflect it now--- these virtual school teachers with the county charter(not state or national) are kick ass teachers. They're the best of the best. They have no problem saying, "I know you can do better. Until you do you're grade is going to stay an embarrassment." And I back the teachers up!

If I feel like my child has been given too much leniency to learn how to do something correctly for the fifth time, then I speak up then, too. I tell the teacher not to give them the 'benefit of the doubt' any longer and that they need to fail that particular assignment. They back me up. They know that I know my kid. They learn about my kids as the year progresses and it shows. Ninety-nine percent of the time, though, the teacher has already done the correct thing and given the crappy grade the child deserves.

I have full access to their gradebooks and their submitted assignments. The teachers comment appropriately on their assignments and then we take it from there as parents. ANY time we've had an issue with something going on the teachers have been wonderful in communicating with us and listening to us as parents.

Before this year we have had some horrible run ins with two other virtual schools. They are not all equal! This is why we changed to our local county charter. In the national and state versions we had teachers fluffing grades like crazy. This only taught one of my boys that he didn't have to learn anything. Well, this year he has a set of teachers(his brother's old teachers! ROFL) who put the crack down on him and he was terrified the first two months. He learned. He learned to hand in quality work if he didn't want to get terrible grades AND if he wanted to have any fun at all at home without getting everything but food, water, and air taken away from him. He learned. Now he's getting A's and B's and truly earning them.

Most kids today don't know what it means to work for grades. School is a joke to them. Homeschool kids have parents who seem to care a lot more. Not saying that there isn't the odd parent or ten out there from standard brick-and-mortar which don't care.... just that homeschooled kids have more scrutiny concerning their education and are taught to live up to expectations.

Apathy and negativity BREED and are CONTAGIOUS in public schools. We reinforce positive things at home so that they retain a love of learning for learning's sake, not just because they're expected to. So far, after three years, it's definitely working. Our kids smile all day and don't come home with bitchy attitudes or being disrespectful to us.

Total respect for home schoolers. Solutions to national issues begin here, with the children. ( Not "kids". Have some respect.)
Few people are Christian, despite the many churches in the US. Most break the Fourth Commandment. Break one, break them all. "If ye love Me, KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS". Can it get any simpler than that?
Real education links knowledge to wisdom. "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom".
Let me prove to you that the Bible is quite simply, the Word of God, and so must be obeyed, from the heart. Go to "The Other Bible Code" w/s by Vernon Jenkins. It is both an educational tool ( geometry, maths ) and a connection of these items of knowledge with a Divine Wisdom which CANNOT be gainsayed. The wisdom derived feeds the soul, which public school "education" cannot do, as it is merely a mechanism to create taxpayers, that's its sum total. Next go to "The Bible Wheel" by Richard Amiel McGough. This has exactly the same message, but leads the student into the study of language, specifically, Hebrew and Greek. These are intrinsically fascinating, beyond measure, but they also link into wisdom. The desire for this wisdom will drive the search for knowledge, not the reverse. Can anyone ever be really fulfilled by designing a microchip for the next Apple gizmo, and getting lots of money in return? Are we not worth much more than this? We are God's Creation, and only an education which has this fact at its heart will ever truly liberate us from the servitude into which we have fallen.

In 1970 Charles Silberman wrote a book titled Crisis in The Classroom. If any caring parent wants to know how the curriculum in the public schools is crushing the minds of children this is it. No child is born stupid. The educational system is getting away with murder. Do not let it happen. They are not locking doors in school to keep danger out it to keep the parents out!!

Anon 2.45AM: "The educational system is getting away with murder. Do not let it happen. They are not locking doors in school to keep danger out it to keep the parents out!!"

AGREED! And since the 1970's it's gotten a million times worse. Most teachers treat parents like they're the enemy to be fought with any means necessary. Like we don't have our children's best interest at heart! We know our children and we know what they're capable of-- and that's a hell of a lot more than the watered down crap they shove at them now.

We have gotten into too many fights with B&M teachers the first three and four years of our childrens' educations concerning quality to let it slide any longer. We are so much happier in homeschool!!!

You do not have to be a teacher nor have a doctorate in education to know that government run schools are highly effective.

They reach that life has no meaning (evolution as fact) morals are relative (multiculturalism and diversity ) man is the measure of all things and that the government is actually your real father.

I had two of their finest subjects ( my son and daughter) visit my house this Christmas and I can tell you without exception that the government indoctrination (oops ) I mean educational system is quite effective.

Neither one of them exibited any of the moral directives that I had wished to incorporate into their young lives.

Wonder if any of them were taught the Ignite program forced on schools created by one of the Bush boys? Government spent millions on that forced program in public schools. Mandatory. Barbara Bush donated 3 million and it was to go to the Ignite creator.

This shows, once again, the benefits of homeschooling. One comment in the post states, "The message is clear, close the government schools and home school the children." Understanding the opposition I'm going to receive for saying this, let me say, this will never happen in today's society. Aside from the advancement of women's rights and, consequently, their place in our society, a man's place really hasn't changed and never will. So, if women used to take care of the children while men have traditionally been the breadwinners, who's losing? Simple answer, the children. Now, some of you might say, why can't the man stay home and educate the children? Well, we certainly can but how will our society view those men? Here's
some words to clarify it: loser, gold digger, bum, lazy. Must I go on? It's a no win situation and all because the liberal side doesn't really take consequences into consideration, or do they? Perhaps the dumbing down of children into robotic Yes Men and Women is the ultimate goal. If it isn't then give me another possible scenario that makes sense.
