Janet Napolitano Visits NYU Law School to Discuss Need For Citizen Spies (Video)

"We have to get to a place where every part of our society is cognizant of the kinds of threats that are out there, and empowered to take some common sense steps to counter that." -- Janet Napolitano

Homeland Security head, Janet Napolitano, continued her campus tour in a recent stop at NYU Law School where she gave a speech about the state of security as we approach the 10-year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, and following the announced death of Osama bin Laden.

In the video below Napolitano lays out a sweeping surveillance agenda that includes citizen spies who have a mission of "shared responsibility" to thwart "Core" al-Qaeda, foreign groups "inspired by" al-Qaeda, as well as domestic "extremist" groups, which apparently include an increasing number of plots by U.S. citizens.  She added that "there is no single portrait" of today's potential terrorist, citing recruiting tactics "including Hip Hop videos, if you can imagine that."  And, naturally, cyberspace. Each of the four key ways that she stated as critical to Homeland Security's mission will widen the Stasi-style network of unpaid employees of the State virtually deputized to spy on their neighbor in the private and public sector and issue reports to the DHS federal security matrix.

  1. Strengthen the nation's 72 fusion centers, which coordinate with local police, businesses, churches, universities and more in a cooperative effort to federalize local communities.

  2. Continue the expanded use of Suspicious Activity Reports (SAR), initially used for IRS reporting and for businesses to alert government officials to large cash purchases at their establishments.  The new initiative will cover all sectors that will share back to DHS.

  3. 3. Launch the National Terrorism Advisory System to replace the general color-coded terror alert system and set up a "base level" high risk, which will be augmented with specific messages.  One component of this new system that she does not address is that it will be directed toward the individual by utilizing a text messaging system, as well as social networks to issue government statements and warnings (or propaganda).

  4. Continue expansion of a national "If You See Something, Say Something" campaign that began with the NY Metropolitan Transit Authority, and kicked off at private businesses like Wal-Mart whereby people can receive ongoing messages via telescreens in government buildings, private businesses and public areas, then report on anyone for any reason without consequence for false reports.
She also predictably suggests that the counter-terrorism apparatus is a useful tool that can save citizens in need of rescue from natural disasters.  More likely, it is the roll-out of soft martial law that will create a permanent state of fear, suspicion, false arrests, police brutality, and the end of the American republic in the same fashion that led to the end of every society that chose the path of security over freedom.

The people need to be on the lookout for these government rats so they can be outed and taken care of appropriately.

"She added that "there is no single portrait" of today's potential terrorist----"Jack's" right on this point. She neglected to include DHS, IRS, BATF, EPA, FDA, IMF, The Fed, TSA, FBI, CIA, NSA, FEMA, Brown Shirts and the Gustapo

I'm seeing something and I'm saying something, Janet.

Summer of 2010, another 450 Rapescanners were purchased with $25 million of "stimulus" money. Rapidscan's v.p. of the appropriately named "global government affairs" said the contract produced 25 jobs in their Mississippi facility. That would be one million dollars per job.

No wonder the economy is toast.

Course Janet's world is great because her department of stupidity got funded a total of $3 billion as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. She's stimulating by funding the new spy camera Internet-Protocol snoopers with companies like ID Consulting Solutions. This new level of surveillance going in at airports is sure to create lots of American jobs, right? I mean these opaque quasi-military intelligence companies ARE American, aren't they? Or is another Obama outsourcing project?

I'm seeing that what has happened to our country since 9-11 is a lot worse than what happened on 9-11. I'm saying that our government has become our worst enemy, and the worst part of it is all the members of government who refuse to look at what they have become.

Anyone can rationalize anything. When the security state was taking its first baby steps, Ashcroft and the others would always say they'd NEVER do x,y,z to citizens! Eventually, with enough cameras and armed drones our masters will finally have us safe on the plantation.

"I doubt the terrorists care about funny"...yeah, cause they aren't human or anything like us...oh wait...it's us they're looking at!

Can I be a spy? Too bad I am to old to go to spy school. Boy I wish I could grow up again... only as I spy for my government that spies on my parents, friends, neighbors and other unsuspecting (most likley plotting) potential enemies of the state. That would be big fun.

I know I will be conditioning my children to be on the look out for whatever the latest threat is. Hey, if they find me doing something against the grain, they should report me, we would all be safer after all if they did. I am not sure I will always be able to save my country from myself.

Fat Janet needs to have a care. I can see several million people reporting her for treasonous activity in the near future.

I wonder if a couple million of us sent messages at the same time like, "I just saw a man with his wanker out at Walmart" or "Guess who I just saw kissing your girlfriend?" if we could crash the system. In 1800 I would have been called a great patriot. Today I'm a terrorist. They'll get theirs.

What is it going to take to get Homeland Security out of our lives? Yes, Janet Napolitano will find her spies. There are always people who will betray their country and its ideals for Judas silver, and others from some mistaken conception of what the true threat is. But does anyone seriously believe that America is being threatened? If so, then by whom, pray tell? To those grown used to the wiles and deceptions of the national security community there can only be one threat. The marketable threats, almost always of Islamic origin, pale beside that implied menace that seems always to be the American people in one or more of its objectionable (i.e. patriotic) forms. Are we then to join DHS and fear ourselves, or should we resolve this contradiction by making clear what an American is and what his true obligations to himself and country are?

Here you see living/breathing proof of America's moral and social collapse. I urge you, get your money OUT of the banks, OUT of the markets, OUT of the dollar, and OUT of America. And do it NOW while you still can. The jig is up for the USA. Americans deserve what they are going to get -- IN SPADES!!!

Anonymous said...

Nobody deserves what we are about to get. From childhood, we are fed a continuous stream of thought controlling horse crap. Almost the entire world does. Regular people tend to trust what these so called leaders tell them because they cannot fathom that anybody would actually be so evil. We do deserve some blame for what our military killing machine has been doing, but the people that deserve them worst is the sold out press and media, the traitors in congress and the past few presidents. That's just the short list.

While I applaud the reminder that the government can be overreaching, the overconcern reflected on this website and page regarding citizen awareness and watchfulness neglects the need to report to the police matters from our 'lizard' brain that don't seem right. Failure to report incidents, suspicions and crimes as well, deprive us of possible protection, as well as reduce statistics that are used by many urban police departments to assign officers to various neighborhoods. Liberty vs security is an ever-present tension that must be admitted. The answer is never easy, and always individual. I come down on the side of security first. If I'm not alive, I can't enjoy liberty.

Can we say, GESTAPO???

Deuce said...

This reeks of fear inside our government that they are afraid of our united power. Hence these schemes to divide us. I expect there will be an all out war between US citizens and the government, which clearly have become directly opposing factions, by 2015.

And for anyone thinking of supporting or participating in this spy network, I will refer you to Cuba. This same system worked great for keeping Castro in power for 50 years, but the result of that was 50 years of citizens living in squalor. The ones who didn't disappear in the middle of the night anyway.

But in the end, this system is self defeating, like all government programs. For 30 years during the cold war, our biggest fear was Russian spies. Spying WAS the primary activity the government deemed suspicious. Pretty hard to maintain a system for spying on people when the number one offense reported by the spies is spying. See the catch 22? More government idiocy that won't prevent our society's hard and inevitable fall. Enjoy your last two weeks in Ancient Rome...

Deuce said...

Ann you'll get your wish soon enough. Not the security part, the part about not being alive.

I've got you at the top of my list of people to report as suspicious as soon as this system goes live. Don't you already feel better knowing that a nuisance like you will soon be off the streets? I know I do. Oh, what is my reason you ask? Who cares. They'll come up with one for me. That way they can go on TV and claim your capture as a victory against terror. I hope you're not too naive to think this isn't how it works.

Hope you don't have any pipe dreams about Habeus Corpus either. We had to abandon it for everyone's safety. Better say goodbye to everyone you know now. Don't worry, it's all for the greater good...

Time to re-watch the Twilight Zone episode, "The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street".

Rod Serling's closing narration is as follows:

"The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs and explosions and fallout. There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, prejudices, to be found only in the minds of men. For the record, prejudices can kill, and suspicion can destroy, and the thoughtless, frightened search for a scapegoat has a fallout all of its own: for the children, and the children yet unborn. And the pity of it is that these things cannot be confined to the Twilight Zone."

NYU is a Zionist hot-house. Does anybody doubt that we live in a police state? If you do, you're not awake. The biggest threat we face is from our own government.

People need to have the guts to tell these clowns what we think of them: Our government official stink.

Please put me on your list of decent American who are opposing the criminals who are currently running our country. BTW, that list gets longer everyday. I'm sure it's already over 100 million.

Fear not if Christ is with you.

Ann,

You are a fool. When your Liberty is sacrificed for your "safety" you have no control over your life. Therefore your hope that you will be either free or safe is of no concern to you. And from my readings of the above comments, neither will your liberty or safety be of any concern for us.

We want to be free. A free people will be safe (read the second amendment to the constitution: a WELL REGULATED militia, being NECESSARY to the security of a FREE state...)

We will take care of our own security, thank you. You go live in dream land where your safety provided by others who are not accountable to you.

BTW, I agree with others. Napolitano is a hag, what is up with ugly people running the gov't?

"We have to get to a place where every part of our society is cognizant of the kinds of threats that are out there, and empowered to take some common sense steps to counter that." -- Janet Napolitano

I agree 100%. And since the US government is THE biggest threat at the moment to US citizens and the world, everyone needs to take steps to counter it.

Ann, do you know where a really safe place is -- maximum security prison. Most people don't want to go there though, and most people sentenced to it probably don't feel very alive.

So they want a government endorsed snitch system? If you don’t like someone… just make up a story and snitch them out. Then Aunt Sam will come down on them as a domestic terrorist. If you have a reputation of being a good snitch… they might even send in a SWAT team while you watch from across the street. Wow what fun! What power! Actually this whole concept is nothing but a program for widespread abuse. We already have an effective system in place to report a crime by calling 911.
The German internal security police (Gestapo) was organized under the Nazi regime, known for its terrorist methods directed against those suspected of treason or questionable loyalty. The Gestapo was a police organization that employed terroristic methods to control a populace. The United States of America put an end to the Gestapo when the Germans surrendered in World War II. Now some in our own government wants to be our Gestapo? What are they thinking?

I am heartened by most of the comments posted here. It is truly gratifying to see so many people understand that nearly every major system on the globe has been infiltrated and calls itself the opposite of what it really is.

My heart goes out to Ann, as I tend to agree with Activist. The safest place in the terms of which she speaks is in a cage or a box. What is unfortunate is that she does not see the real threat which is a world on the verge of take over by mad men assisted by those hiding behind the office of government.

You are ignored by your government representatives because you are not important. You are only here to be taxed and to serve the machine. You will do nothing but complain because you can do nothing else.

"And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?... The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! If...if...We didn't love freedom enough. And even more – we had no awareness of the real situation.... We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward." Alexander Solzhenitsyn

Government 'security' sacrifices freedom. The more the government inforces security, the less are freedoms. Government has an innate quest for growth. When it grows to where there is total 'security', there will be no freedom.

it amazes, though never surprises, me that so-called "activists" always talk about how bad things are getting without the slightest trace of irony.

for the amerikan empire--from the perspective of its myriad victims (starting with the genocide and enslavement of American Indians and Africans through to this moment)--has always been brutally-imperial, -parasitic and -fascist.

it's nice that you're waking up to it, but that's all you're doing: waking up.

countless past and present ask:

why has it taken so long?

and what are you going to do about it?

tragically, most "activists" desperately want to restore amerika to its former "glory".

which means they favor a kinder, gentler, imperial, parasitic fascism (for the, "amerikan way", can only exist through Ponzi-and-Pyramid dynamics: there is no such thing as a "free market" and no living being is "self-sufficient"):

Nazi Germany again, it's true!
However, in Nazi Germany one could still have the remote chance to get away from it all and hide in a forest till people found their way back to sanity.

No such luck today! Surveillance satellite technology, thorugh all surveillance, GPS devices, genetic testing, the use of tags or implants, tapped phones, gang stalking in the name of neighborhood watching group, video surveillance in every store with government agencies able to tap into it, airline reporting every ticket purchase, suspicious activities reports, etc., they all make it impossible to escape these days.

George Orwell's 1984 was paradise in comparison with our reality today! His imagination wasn't vivid enough - in it people were not submitted to no touch torture by Directed Energy Weapons by their own neighbors as well as state agencies.
