A New “Apocalyptic” Cyber Attack Could Wipe Out The Internet and Much More

By Helena Sutan

A new ‘apocalyptic’ cyber attack could wipe out the Internet, putting NASA, televisions, and Minecraft at risk.

The ‘worst-ever’ Internet security flaw could be ‘apocalyptic’ for the tech industry, as everything from NASA helicopters to Amazon and Google is now vulnerable to a powerful hacking exploit.

The “worst ever” Internet security breach has been discovered, with implications ranging from Amazon and NASA to Minecraft and smart TVs.

The vulnerability, which could allow hackers to take control of almost anything on the Internet, has reportedly caused panic among tech companies.Staff at Silicon Valley firms have been pulling all-nighters, according to the Seattle Times, to ensure their code is secure.

According to a Google employee, the company has seen more than 500 engineers working overtime to ensure that their software is up to date.

According to Jen Easterly, the US Cybersecurity Director, the security flaw known as log4j is “the most serious vulnerability I have seen in my decades-long career.”

Huge swaths of the Internet are powered by a piece of code known as log4j.This aids in the logging and tracking of past activity by various software.

However, cybersecurity experts have discovered that all hackers have to do is make the program log a line of malicious code, and the program will execute it, giving hackers complete control of entire servers.

Because log4j is one of the most widely used pieces of code on the Internet, it poses a significant threat.

It’s part of the Java programming language, which is used in the vast majority of software.Importantly, web behemoths like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, IBM, and Oracle are impacted, putting every other website or company that relies on their services in jeopardy.

Minecraft, most smart TVs, and even NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter on Mars fall into this category.

The loophole has reportedly existed for years, and Iranian-backed hackers have attempted to hack into the Israeli government using it.

The US government has set a Christmas Eve deadline for resolving the issue, but even if it is resolved in time, hackers could have already gained access to thousands of apps and services.

To stay safe, don’t open any spam or suspicious emails, and make sure all of your apps are updated to the latest version.

Hopefully, this will pass and we will still be able to use the Internet in January.
