Passover Reflections—The Flight from Oppression Towards Freedom

Op-Ed by Janet Phelan

As the narrative goes, somewhere around 2000 BC a number of Jews fled slavery in Egypt to find refuge in the promised land. This story, with its central threads of oppression and redemption, has very strong resonances throughout history and is again rearing up as the central theme in our geopolitical crisis today.

The oppressor has cleverly changed its shape. No longer a murderous despot in ancient Egypt, the oppressor today takes the visage of a kindly and proactive President and multiple concerned world leaders and helpful government agencies. The murders of the first born planned by Pharaoh also take a more confusing and difficult-to-discern shape—now we have murder via a plague of undisclosed origins and—most importantly—murder by its countermeasures. What has been put into place as a result of the plague appears to be far more dangerous than the plague itself.  A Pandemic Future May Contain a Triangulation of Attacks – Activist Post

Many are now asserting we are in an “end times” scenario. Rather, I would suggest that the central theme of human life on planet Earth has never altered. The story of oppression and flight from the oppressors has never changed. What may make our current situation exceptional is the global nature of the oppression now. No longer are we seeing the efforts of a single despot in Egypt, nor the freeing of the bonds from an oppressive colonial government in a new country, nor the throwing off of a monarchy to establish what first appears to be a more democratic form of government. We are seeing a global collusion by governments worldwide to induce a medical form of tyranny, which can so easily lead to mass death. Indeed, in the nursing homes of New York and elsewhere, it already has. Cuomo aides altered nursing home deaths report, health department confirms

Israel, which is central to the founding biblical myth, is now acting as a template for this oppression. Israel has also now been reported as cutting a backroom deal with vaccine manufacturer Pfizer to use the entire Israeli population as an experiment, without so informing the Israelis. In the mythical time of the Exodus, only 20% or so of the Hebrews were reported as fleeing the dictates of Pharaoh. The others reportedly didn’t think that slavery was so bad. They didn’t think that the murder of their first born was so bad, or maybe they just didn’t believe that Pharaoh would carry out this threat.

According to the biblical narrative, both Old Testament and New, there will be a divine intervention to redeem our sick and possibly dying world. While this perspective may keep hope alive, it also allows us for diminished responsibility for the outcome.  After all, this all has a happy ending, right? We can just sit back and watch the fireworks, right?

I would like to posit that the “happy ending” is impacted to a great degree by our choices, the paths we assume in this crisis. I would like to posit that now, more than ever, the actions we take may have larger repercussions than we had ever imagined. I would like to suggest that while the fate of freedom—and possibly life itself– in this world lies in the balance, so does the divine spark within all of us. We can choose a safer path now or we can choose to be fearless and forthright in our endeavors. We can choose to educate and help our friends and countrymen, who may be struggling at a different level of knowledge and understanding, or we can turn away from them. And whatever choices we make, we must understand that these choices will affect not only the fate of this planet, but the fate of the divine spark within each and every one of us.

Planet Earth has never been a safe place to live. It is a planet besieged not only with tyranny and war, but also with unpredictable natural occurrences, earthquakes, tsunamis, erupting volcanoes. It is and remains, however, a place of enormous opportunities. It is a planet where each and every one of us has the freedom to make choices that may have amazing future repercussions, both for good and for ill. Let’s keep that uppermost in our minds as we sally forth into the battlefield.
