Sheriff Urges Citizen Firearm Defense: "We're Partners Now"

Sheriff David Clarke
"...your safety -- it's no longer a spectator sport; I need you in the game. But are you ready?"

A public service radio announcement from Sheriff David Clarke encourages Milwaukee citizens to consider getting certified safety training for handling firearms to protect themselves. He reminds them that with police force cutbacks and furloughs, police arrival time has changed and waiting for police after calling 911 is not the best option. He gives three options - begging for mercy from criminals, hiding under the bed, or fight back.

But are you prepared?

"It's your duty to protect yourself and your family," he says. He sends both the personal responsibility and power back to the people. "We're partners now. Can I count on you?"

The ad drew sharp flak and calls for resignation from anti-violence groups (so they want to protect criminal violence?), other officials and even Roy Felber, president of the Milwaukee Deputy Sheriff's Association said it sounded like a call to vigilantism. Seriously?

When a criminal busts into your home armed to do harm, is protecting your family the same as what Charles Bronson did in Death Wish?

Then Felber said:
That doesn't sound too smart. People have the right to defend themselves but they do not have the right to take the law into their own hands.
Translation: people should not take responsibility for their own protection, they do not have a right to defend themselves. Calling self-defense the same as taking the law into our own hands doesn't seem logical.

Mayor Tom Barrett's office released a sarcastic critical statement saying that Clarke must be trying to audition for the next Dirty Harry movie. Ironically, the mayor was beaten with a tire iron several years ago, but Dirty Harry, or John McClane (still in Die Hard sequels) was not there to save him.

Clarke wanted people to know their options; and there is already a Castle Doctrine in Wisconsin that upholds  self defense from home, car and business intruders. What seems like common sense to many, the interviews and so-called controversy compelled Clarke to clarify, "I’m not telling you to ‘Hey, pick up a gun and blast away.’ ... People need to know what they are doing if they choose that method — to defend themselves."

Having to lay off 48 deputies caused him to rethink responsibility and the increasing burden on the county's law enforcement. He wants law enforcement to be seen realistically as help to those who are already taking responsibility for their safety. He says: “I’m here to do my part, but we have fewer and fewer resources. We’re not omnipresent, and we have to stop giving people that impression.” The public is his untapped reserve.

Other officers claim there are lower crime rates, no layoffs, and they feel that the message makes the public fearful that there is a cop shortage. The mayor wants more money to hire more law enforcement. Even Sheriff Clarke's spokesperson claimed he never promoted buying guns in the ad and said the "Department of Homeland Security advises that in an active shooter environment, victims should run, hide, or, if those options don't exist, they should fight - aggressively." While opponents claim public fear-rousing, it appears Clarke intended to empower citizens.

The ad has also resonated positively with a lot of people - maybe that's because of the increasing number of sheriffs stepping up to serve and protect the Constitution and the People. More are reaching out to their local sheriffs to encourage them as our last line of defense against tyranny. Instead of leaving us wondering if we can count on him; Sheriff David Clarke has made the first move reaching out to let us know we're partners now - can he count on us?

Text from Clarke's message:
I’m Sheriff David Clarke, and I want to talk to you about something personal…your safety. It’s no longer a spectator sport; I need you in the game, but are you ready? With officers laid-off and furloughed, simply calling 9-1-1 and waiting is no longer your best option. You can beg for mercy from a violent criminal, hide under the bed, or you can fight back; but are you prepared? Consider taking a certified safety course in handling a firearm so you can defend yourself until we get there. You have a duty to protect yourself and your family. We’re partners now. Can I count on you?

I trust this individual about as much as I trust Obamya. When the PTB’s threaten his paycheck, his pension, and his family, he’ll most likely be singing a different tune to his “partners.”
NEVER trust a cop or any other state agent.

Actually the Mayor helped diffuse a domestic violence incident that was in progress, that's how he got hit...defending a citizen.

EDwin said...

Yep, and we have always had it. It has always been "up to us" to take action like this man is doing now. The man is speaking the truth so back him up! Respect always, -EDwin

Good joke.

Hey Roger , you're missing obvious and that is the Sherrif's message is complete opposite what the U.S. Establishment/ NWO / Globalist wants .. an armed , trained citizenry.
Did you hear , there's a movement to Ban Guns . Should follow news little more closely .

Back your Sheriff until he proves he is against the Constitution... I would stand with him if I were in this county.... You citizens should count yourselves lucky to have him... Talk with him before he has to talk to you... Find out his beliefs and standards, because he is the highest Officer in the County.... He outranks the Feds... He has top jurisdiction in the County... So, get him on your side...He may have to call upon you for assistance some day....

Hmm, a very well stated(PR) announcement on his part, nice to see but essentially irrelevant.

When those making the laws will simply alter the legal processes to suit their needs these sorts of things are token gestures by seemingly honorable men and women in uniform trying to do the right thing.

See the Patriot Act, NDAA, various wiretapping bills and privacy invading internet monitoring bills and such that everyone here should be aware of.

And going back to the 1940's you have the most blatant case with the International Military Tribunal(IMT) aka the Nuremberg Trials.

As per the governing statutes of the IMT set out in the London Charter of the IMT articles 19 and 21 -

Article 19: "The Tribunal shall not be bound by technical rules of evidence."

Article 21: "The Tribunal shall not require proof of facts of common knowledge, but shall take judicial notice thereof."

When the standard legal processes do not suit them they will simply change the legal processes.

In the case of the IMT justified by U.S Chief Prosecutor Robert H. Jackson in (I believe) Volume 19, page 440 of the IMT transcripts by the fact that the IMT was a "continuation of the Allied war effort" against the German Reich.

Robert H. Jackson went on to state that...

"...if this trial leads to a discussion of the political and economic causes of the war, this may cause infinite damage, both in Europe I do not know well, and in America that I know fairly well."

In war when it is deemed necessary to the PTB's interests the laws are very flexible(if applicable at all), as are the legal processes and standards of evidence and such.

Especially when trying to lay the blame for a war they provoked entirely on their enemies by claiming it was "unprovoked aggression" on their part(hence discussion of the causes of the war would do "infinite damage" and were prohibited).

In the name of the "War on Terror" you can bet Obama and the PTB's of today will have no problem changing the legal processes as need be... they already have many times, once again see the NDAA and "indefinite detention".

Actions by those like the Sheriff here are nice to see if they are honest and noble in cause, but as said in my first sentence ultimately they are irrelevant - if the fed's want your guns they will come take them and simply bypass the sheriff's with National Guard or regular military forces.

Those who make the laws can break the laws or simply change the laws as they see fit.

Obama's long arm is coming for you!! He's a traitor.....well if he was an American he would be.

Anonymous said...

Haha, begging for mercy. That works so well with criminals.

I don't know why some of you have to be so critical. If I heard a message like this from our sheriff out here in Los Angeles, I'd jump for joy!

Thank you!
I would give my life to back you up. You are a rare and patriotic person of intelligence, common sense, and bravery.

I wish we had Sheriffs in Oregon of your extreme high caliber.

Sheriffs 'n judges are the most powerful figures in the community. There is a growing contingent of sheriffs that actually intend to keep their oath (search oathkeepers), this is what a hero looks like, we need more. Soon those in uniform will have to make the most important decision of their lives.

It's time to redefine what us and them really means.

Pure theater.

Well if he was running for the elected position of County Sheriff Where I live I would most likely vote for him.
Fact is most elected sheriffs are no more than toadys gor the county prosecutor to serve warrants and a Prossess server.
They are not on the road facing down the evil doers but making sure the books balace in his departments ledgersand his manpower is used effectively.
Then in almost all southern countys and west of Mississippi River it is the duty of a Sheriff to protect property, public and private, and to protect those who elected them from evil doers of both non. And elected positions.
His is the position betwen you and a mostly appointed bureaucracy that are not responsible to the public but to ther boss at the staition, CHIEF which in 90% of metros is a political appointment with little if any way an abused citizenry can rid themselves of.
Most police departments leadership owe their allegiance to a mayor and enen political part leaders not the voting public.
It should not be as in many states that a county sherrif is looked uopin as a lesser law officer when in truth he is not just rural but aldo of any city street in the county that elected him while a cop out of uniform remains a civilian even in uniform. Something cops have forgotten.

Jennifer - I had not heard about the mayor getting hurt defending a citizen - that was very brave and unfortunate that he got hurt. Clarke still thought it would have been helpful if he had been armed - then maybe no one would have gotten hurt.

Great comments and points guys! PR stunt or not, Clarke's making a bold statement. I think it's important to remain positive and solution-based and not alienate our Sheriffs who might be straddling the line. They need our encouragement and our support if they uphold the Constitution. Remember that there are Oathkeepers and those will not turn on us in the Services. They need to know that we care and we are watching. Thanks!

Why don't just get done with it and all become policemen......make it a police state, they can all carry guns and eventually kill one another.....

A man who does not protect his family, wife, kids etc even if he has to take life,is not a man. I would go to jail if need be to protect my family and if someone breaks into my home uninvited "He's a dead man'

Well, it's finally come down to this....the government wants to take away your ability to defend yourself from the criminals, period.

Then, that makes them anti-constitutional criminals. What is the real agenda behind the anti-gun groups? It's not the guns, there's something else going on. Why now? We never had these people yapping 30, 40, 50, 60 years ago?

Something is rotten here. To the anti-gun people...take guns away then, how do we protect ourselves? Stones and sticks?

If they don't want him there, I'd gladly vote him in here.

Years ago a county I lived in hired a cop gom a small rural town and in 4 years they voted him in as Vounty Shertif hell even named a park for him.
I knew him from rural vounty where, leys call them aquaintences, were running quite a bit of pot hrough connectoons in community pne of them him.
A bully is mild to place him in and damn near whole town new the jufge city fellows and police were crooked and only outsiders who muscled in got busted.
Hells Angels and others moved the dtuf and filled his pockets as well

Old timer fellow timber faller called him a bastard one night because as he made the tavern rounds he thpught we wrre laughing at him, my bud was screwing the cops wife but we were not laughing at him, and the cop laid his billy across his shoulder hard
The cuss word came out the billy was raised a berr was thrown by an unknown and my bud kicked hos ass threw him out and ordered another beer.
Well three saints in blue came back took all three to get him down and hauled away.
I bailed him out. .the justice needed reminding of who knew what and case was dimissed
Vop got fored when he got mad when wife told him my bud was better man so he pulled bud over and wad pistil whipping hom bad but a state fuzzthe only honest fuzz in miles got to see it go down.New trial case dismisssed and cop got fored and then rehired by anoter crooked one in my home county.
He beme sherrif and the heavy boys with blow and smack moved in.
HE became fat and wealthy as did rest of ssmll political establishment and local growers as well.
Was by that park after local Bb game, late at night so I got out and pissed on his plaque and am gonna do the same on his grave.
Just cuz a man talks big and pretty much buddys up to you while wearing a star or badge that does not mean he does not have something up his sleeve, and behind his words and smiles remember that he works for himself as well as the government.

All of you who are so critical of his man had better realize that it is individuals like him who have made this great country, with all the freedoms you enjoy, what it is. I personally would rather see a Sheriff encourage law-abiding citizens to take care of themselves than to hear him say that people should sit back and wait for someone else to take care of them. This country was built on self-sufficiency. In this era of budget cuts, we need to recognize that law enforcement doesn't have the man power to be everywhere at once. Statistics prove, in areas where the citizens are well armed, gun deaths go down. In areas with strict gun control or outright bans, gun deaths go up. It's hard to argue with that.
