New Research: GMO Food Far Worse Than We Think

Disturbing new research published in the Journal of Applied Toxicology indicates that genetically modified (GM) crops with "stacked traits"  -- that is, with multiple traits such as glyphosate-herbicide resistance and Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) insecticidal toxins engineered together into the same plant, are likely far more dangerous to human health than previously believed, due to their synergistic toxicity.

Resistance to glyphosate, the active ingredient in the herbicide Roundup, has been engineered into many GM plants, so that fields can be sprayed indiscriminately with herbicide without destroying the crops. While the GM glyphosate-resistant plants survive, they subsequently contain residues of glyphosate and its various metabolites (e.g. aminomethylphosphonic acid) that present a significant health threat to the public.

In this latest study the glyphosate-containing herbicide Roundup was tested on human embryonic kidney cells at concentrations between 1 to 20,000 parts per million (ppm). It was found that concentrations as low as 50 ppm per million, which the authors noted were "far below agricultural dilutions," induced cell death, with the 50% of the cells dying at 57.5 ppm.

The researchers also found that the insecticidal toxin produced by GM plants known as Cry1Ab was capable of causing cell death at 100 ppm concentrations.

Taken together the authors concluded:
In these results, we argue that modified Bt toxins are not inert on nontarget human cells, and that they can present combined side-effects with other residues of pesticides specific to GM plants.

These disturbing findings follow on the heels of recent revelations that Roundup is several orders of magnitude more toxic than previously believed. Only 5 days ago (Feb. 14) the journal Archives of Toxicology reported that Roundup is toxic to human DNA even when diluted to concentrations 450-fold lower than used in agricultural applications.

This effect is likely due to the presence of the surfactant polyoxyethyleneamine within the Roundup formulation which may dramatically enhance the absorption of glyphosate into exposed human cells and tissue.

Make the bosses at Monsanto PROVE their food is okay by living on a diet 50% of their GMO food for a decent period of time.

amen stevor, between the drug companies and monsanto more people die every day by these companies hands.

Monsanto should be prosecuted for crimes against humanity in peddling poisonous GMO products that cross-pollinate with non-GMO crops. Monsanto is obviously trying to take over world agricultural markets and acquire farmland suing farmers who don't knuckle under. They take steps to preclude scientific testing or reporting of their products, and have major influence in government.

Apparently, Monsanto assures its staff that it does NOT serve any GMO food in its cafeteria.

They knew it was bad, its part of the depopulation program, the head of the FDA used ot be a Monsanto atty, then a CEO, now he regulates your food. there is also the codex act, all the vitamins in your food radiated out.If we did this it would be called attempted mass murder, they get away with it.

Whatever we do now,, its a case of closing the stable door after the horse has bolted. P*sses me off so much that people think they know what we should eat and were narrow minded not to consider how GM pollen would be spread by insects.

There's a petition to remove the former Monsanto VP and lobbyist as Obama's current food safety czar.

Mandate that Monsanto's cafeteria use nothing but GMO food for a year, then have them tested. Let see how they like being lab rats for once. Better yet, hold a luncheon before bills are passed federally and locally, and let them know, BTW your lucheon was completely GMO, so if you think it's a good idea to be told beforehand; perhaps you should allow the consumer to be notified before hand also.

Talk is getting no where with these monsters and their machines, time to start smashing the machine before it smashes us, and send em all(and the politicians who help them) to fantasy island with only gmo crops and let em die off over a few generations.

End the ENDLESS UNDECLARED WARS [and, the FRAUDULENT WAR ON 'TERROR', which is an undeclared war on Americans]
End the 'Fed'
Restore Liberty

Today (2/20/2012) is PRESIDENT'S Day. What better day for Americans to support Ron Paul, and his Campaign to Restore America? He can do A LOT, to return America to its former GREATNESS, but, he will ONLY DO IT, WITH YOUR (AND MY) HELP!
(I already donated $100.00 to Ron Paul, today).

I personally love GM food. I have been eating it for the last 3 years and can not discern the difference. GM beer is a favorite of mine.

The formerly deceitful, now blatantly dispicable, manipulation of our food chain by Monsanto and others for 'all who eat' nothing short of criminal; not just for humans but also the animals. After giving my two dogs what is touted by label as "Natural Dog Food" I recently wrote the manufacturer to ask if they were certain to avoid GMOs and quite candidly, their reply was akin to 'although we try, there are SO MANY GMO-derived sources of raw material that we cannot guarantee our products are entirely without GMO.' [Emphasis mine.] Whoa, now all the more reason to drop even seemingly safer kibble and feed my pets hand-prepared, whole, raw, and ideally, organic food just as I eat. After I happened across and have no affiliation other than with keen appreciation, go to the site to learn more and see a substantial list of 'certified as non-GMO' food labels that are still safer to consume. I bet we can agree that these days, any such peace of mind is HUGE. Stay vigilant everyone, and BE well.

A recent study released by the International Journal of Biological Sciences found that Monsanto's GM Corn causes liver and kidney damage in lab rats. Monsanto only released the raw data after a legal challenge from Greenpeace, the Swedish Board of Agriculture, and French anti- GM campaigners. I'm sure the corn is fine to feed to our cattle or eat ourselves though. Right?

Alright, lets dig in folks.

First thing to notice, is that this is yet another paper by GE Seralini, an extremely contraversial scientist who routinely publishes scientifically unsound work.

His previous two paper were largely debunked by both scientists and multiple independent government agencies. Citations :

European Food Safety Agency's criticism of his 2007 paper ( and 2009 paper (

Food Standard of Australia and New Zealand debunk his 2007 and 2009 papers (

So just to be clear, we are dealing with an author that has a history of poor research and hostility to criticism.

But lets give him and his group the benefit of the doubt. Lets only address the article.

The immediate thing to notice is that this isn't a full journal article. It is a "short communication". Corn toxicity is a HUGE claim, backed up by two figures? They better be damn convincing.

Notice that all the results are data from cell lines, not human dietary measurments. That is a giant red flag. You can't make human toxicity claims based of minor fluctuations in cell lines, nobody does that.

Lets go deeper.

Figure 1A.

First of all, there is no control on cell death after 24 hours. Second of all, the results are completely inconsistent. We have three proteins, with the same mode of action, with huge fluctuations in cell death, and then suddenly a significant value? I don't buy it. You need to go deeper than that to prove toxicity.

Figure 1B

They try to reinforce this claim of cry9A activity but their "significant" results only display their inconsistency.

First of all, they couldn't show any effect on caspases. Quote "No effect was detected on caspase 3/7 activities (cell death markers); therefore results are not displayed."

Well isn't that sleezy.

[7] Caspases are a hallmark of cell death, yet you can't detect them?? This completely undermines your conclusions!

Their results are also inconsistent with Figure 1A which shows no effect using Cry9c but in Figure1B the same protein shows a large effect when measuring adenylate kinase. Almost as large as their significant value...

So their first two figures are a case study in inconsistency. Hopefully figure 2 has some more convincing evidence.

Figure 2A.

As you increase glyphosate (roundup) application on a cell line, they start do die. Shocking results right here.

I bet I could take 1,000 household chemicals, food additives or even natural foods and cause the same result. Applying chemicals directly to cells lines proves nothing, particularly when you are trying to prove something about an unrelated protein.

Figure 2B.

Caspase activity as you apply Cry9A and roundup together.

So they have a protocol where they apply both at once and measure "cell death". As we have seen above, roundup directly applied to sensitive cell cultures causes them to die. The second bar shows the caspase activity resulting from roundup alone. Looking at every other bar to the right we can clearly see a pattern! His evidence shows that Cry9Ab and Cry9Ac prevent cell death from roundup. It is significant!

This does not prove BT is in any way toxic to humans. In fact, if it proves anything at all, it proves BT is protective if you were to eat it with glyphosate.

More realistically, it proves that cell lines have high noise.
