It's official, national austerity measures are here! As Wisconsin protesters fill the streets because of lost rights and benefits to workers, the nation is gearing up to face similar losses with social security being cut. Comedian George Carlin warned us that this day would come:

The debate has moved from whether or not to cut social security, to how many cuts, how much, and when they'll start. Threatened with the prospect of a government shutdown, Democrats are pushing for compromise by agreeing to cut social security to avert a manufactured "shutdown" disaster.
For years the government has had no problem raiding the surplus in the social security fund to pay for wars, bank bailouts, General Motors, and a slew of other unfunded giveaways. Yet, now, as they claim bankruptcy, they seek to take even more from the program.
As Marti Oakley recently pointed out:

Since the Johnson Administration of the '60s, the S.S. fund has been plundered and the surplus from the fund used to finance wars and the daily operations of the federal government. Now, seniors and future generations that had nothing to do with creating the national debt and massive shortfalls in social security are going to pay the price. Seniors have already had cost of living increases to their SS checks frozen for the last two years. The overall equation for the average citizen has tipped so far in the favor of the elites who orchestrated this mess, that it's time to draw the line in the sand.
The perceived debt problems will not be solved by cutting social security while the wars continue and the banks get a blank check from the taxpayer. If we aren't ready to fight for their deserved benefits now, then we may deserve the absolute looting that is occurring.

Because 14% of you idiots are illiterate and even for the literate folks it doesn't matter because none of you read anyways! No one will touch the holy cow, the 1.1 trillion dollar annual military expenditures. A country full ignorant people, almost a quarter are unemployed, starving elderly, and with the mightiest military in the world. What a scary combination.
I think anyone with half a brain jumped ship already. Why stick around a country full of dimwits who are unable to see what's going on around them? I bailed 5 years ago, and encourage anyone else with a triple digit IQ to do the same. There's no sense in staying and fighting for a country full of people who are too incompetent to care for themselves or their neighbors. Leave the country and watch it suffer from intellectual capital outflow.
I agree with the first two comments. I cannot believe how asleep the American sheep are. It is not only those with double digit IQ's. These are people who don't worry about things they cannot control -- until they see people taken to FEMA Camps and they haven't had a decent meal in months.

This is just insanity. Social Security has reserves for many years into the future. That is if the Government thievery of the SS trust fund is replenished.
Now we get to what is happening now.
If Congress can destroy the program in an emergency situation without much time for debate then they have skirted having to pay the program back anything. Having to pay back what US workers already paid for week after week after week would just lessen what the corporate vultures have available to feast off of. Thus the reason for all this Social Security bashing. Also the reason for the inclusion of the SS tax break this year. Less money to the program and more ammunition for the destruction of the most successful social program ever.
In this nation, where brawls break out on Black Friday over the Nintendo Wii, austerity measures will make Greece look like a bingo match full of 90 year olds.

there is only one way to fight back in a non-violent manner. STOP PAYING TAXES to the criminal regime. Everyone has a legitimate case that can be won if tested. Waste of taxpayer dollars is appalling. There is still 2.3 trillion unaccounted for from the pentagon. Foreign aid continues rampant to many countries in efforts to coerce reluctant leaders. Most of our direct taxes (those paid during filing) are to the federal reserve which charges interest for "printed" moneys given to the treasury. CONgress can coin its own money...it doesn't need the federal reserve to print our money which is actually debt money since there is not enough money to pay the principal plus interest.
And most of the commenters are correct. Many americans will stand around with their hands in their pockets. BUT, it is our job to continue to educate and motivate them. Americans are very divided among non-issues. I hate to see people flee the country because of this. They should stay and fight. Afterall, we sent our men and women to fight wars in other countries, why would you not stay and fight for your own country.
The reason may be is that you think you are defeated. You must change your way of thinking. Be positive and constructive. America is a beautiful country and there are many smart people. The problem is not that people will not fight for their rights and to be treated as free individuals. The problem is that we are divided along social and wealth. Everyone thinks they are special. The "haves" dare not help the "have nots". In this regard, we will lose any battle.
Social security is NOT an entitlement. That is what THEY tell you and I. Where is the contract that says I must pay taxes throughout my entire life for nothing in return? Specific funds designated as "social security" were taken from your paycheck. It is no different than apportioning moneys to a 401k plan. Would you allow someone to steal your 401k plan after you had paid into it for decades?
I think not. If they want to end the program, so be it. Please return my invested moneys with interest. Its really that simple in my mind. If they choose to steal from of us, then they will face us in court and in the streets. (continued below)

The enemy of this land is Congress and all governmental branches. They are corrupted to the bone. They need to be purged. Accountability and transparency needs to be installed immediately. This second decade of the 21st century should consist of public trials that hold our leaders accountable for past actions . Everything should be questioned. We should not relent or become lazy. I see more people willing to spend energy to wash their cars, go to sporting events, boating, Disney land and other useless acts that only continue to strengthen the fascist death hold on this country.
What Americans do not realize is that change in America would bring about change throughout the entire world. The corrupt and evil regime running America is the cancer of the world. Americans can save the world but they must do what is necessary to bring our leaders to real justice. The world is waiting. Running off to another country will not solve the problem. I'm not going to no foreign country, I'm staying here. So much to forage (at certain times of the year) in the mountains and forests. I'm on SS and using that SS to buy gear to live through the cold winters and wet rain. If SS is still around for a few more months, I'll invest in junk silver too. I'll pick up a weapon and fight to save America and gain some brothers and sisters.

What the United States should do is stop helping everyone else out and think about the citizens of the United States first and formost. There's not much to be happy about these days. I scrimp and scrap trying to keep up with the bills and still keep a roof over my head. I'm retired and the past two years without a cost of living raise have been very hard. When I look around and see what this great country is rapidly becoming I'm happy I'm old and at the end of my road instead of young and just beginning to cope with it all. :-(

I know it's small change, I've put about a quarter million into my SS retirement, and am retired. Now it's negotiable? I paid for Viet Nam with that? For Nicarauga and Desert F--- Up? I didn't vote for that, and the Military Industrial Complex made a killing. Just give me my money back, I won't ever ask for another dime. Funny how the fence down south can be crossed over quickly from the other side coming in from Mexico. You can Google it and even see a video of girls doing it, but practically impossible to get out? I have a cousin that lives down there by the border and he tried it. He couldn't figure it out. Has a huge metal wall that keeps you from getting a grasp on the rails.
Yes we can go freely across the border and they seem to have little trouble coming here.....how come, then I read we need a passport to go to Canada? Is that true?
We spend over 3 billion processing disability claims with only half 1.5 billion being legit claims. These same claimants will file over and over again costing $1000 + each time. If claimants have to prove they are disabled versus the government we could cut the 3 billion plus a year just on processing disability claims. This is a low estimate as cost for the frequent filers is not in the 3 billion number given.

I recently had to file for SSDI due to a no fault auto accident that left me and my son in continuous treatment and surgeries. I'm all for LEGAL immigration, but I can give you a first hand view of what happened to social security:
A) Psych Eval: 4 other waiting to be seen, the receptionist was on the phone complaining that none of the interpreters had shown up and 2 of the 4 had been waiting for this appointment for over a month to finalize their SSI.
B) SSI Physical Eval: Woman in my apartment building has no obvious limp but the day of her physical called a cab because she was "unable to drive" and took a walker with her
SSI is for low income people who have never worked, or have not worked and accrued enough credits to qualify for the minimum SS Disability Income payment.
SSI is easier to get than SSDI, so its easier if you havent worked and and your money has not been stolen for this bogus program!
You DONT need to be a citizen, or speak English to collect SSI!
If you dont pay into the system through your company or self employed payroll you will be fined, penalized, etc but they humiliate you and make you beg for only a portion back if you become disabled!
If you are approved for SSI (low Income/no work credits) you get medicare IMMEDIATELY, if you are approved for SSDI (worked and had your money taken from you) you have to wait 24 (twenty four) months before you are eligible for medicare!
SSI recipients are immediately eligible for state medical, food, cash assistance, but SSDI recipients are normally seen as "above the income limit" even trying to support a family of 3 on 2000$ a month and having to pay medical premiums for 2 years out of that!
We have shown the ability, pride, and drive to go to work so they can take our money for this system so God Forbid we dont go back to work and keep handing it over. I just scheduled my 3rd surgery and came home to a notice saying I was denied for SSDI because my 5 minute physical exam concluded I am completely capable of returning to work on a full time basis and my work history shows that I can make enough to be financially independent.
Cut ssi? What are they thinking? Again taking from the poor rather than from the riches of the Goverment workers. Lets start with cutting all goverment workers salaries and taking some of the paid personal days away that most people don't get. Oh they made sacrifices they had to drop to a 32 hour week at one time but were given the pay back a few months later. How did that save money? I am on SSDI and I can't afford my house taxes, so after working all my life to keep a home, now because of this wasteful goverment I may lose the home I worked so hard for. Stop taking from the poor, and pull out your own wallets for a change!!!!
We jump and and help other nations who seem to have leaders that abuse their people. Well, who is jumping in to save the people on SSI, SSDI, and the poor from our goverment leaders who seem to continually abuse them financially???
