Did You Know? The Pittsfield Tower That Drives Homelessness
When the Pittsfield Verizon cell tower was activated in 2020, symptom onset and illness drove people from their homes.
The neighborhood has been seeking assistance for nearly 1000 days due to the nuisance toxin, as confirmed by the Massachusetts Association of Health Boards.
“In November of 2017, the Pittsfield Zoning Board of Appeals granted a land use permit to Verizon Wireless to install a 115-foot monopole tower at 877 South Street, Pittsfield. The tower was eventually constructed and was activated on August 4, 2020, and began transmitting on August 21, 2020. Within a short time of the start of operating that tower, the city began receiving reports of illness from the surrounding community. In response to these complaints, in January of 2021, the City Council requested that the Board of Health investigate. A fifteen month investigation ensued, ending in April of 2022. The Board of Health held a series of public hearings and meetings and consequently determined that there were, in fact, a group of residents who had been harmed by RF radiation determined to have been transmitted by the wireless facility. The Pittsfield Board of Health laid out the fact that its study found that people living in the so-called “Shack Town” district of Pittsfield were complaining of headaches, sleep problems, heart palpitations, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), dizziness, nausea, skin rashes, and memory and cognitive problems, among other medical complaints. These symptoms experienced by the residents are consistent with those described in the peer-reviewed scientific and medical literature as being associated with exposure to pulsed and modulated Radio Frequency (“RF”) radiation, including RF from cell towers.“- Source

Did You Know? Smart Meters and Lack of Precaution
‘Smart’ meters are intended to be rolled out by investor-owned utilities in the near future in Rhode Island and in Massachusetts. A number of states continue to be involved in advocacy for meter opt out policies.
What science supports the claims that the technology is safe?
During the Obama administration, when wireless and powerline smart meters were installed, there were immediate reports of harm, including disability that drove people from their homes.
As noted by the European Environment Agency in their work on “the Precaution Principle and Late Lessons from Early Warnings,” “the growing innovative powers of science seem to be outstripping its ability to predict the consequences of its applications.” The precautionary principle can be “useful in circumstances of trying to prevent potentially serious and irreversible effects,” and can require “more humility and less hubris in science.”
The lack of appropriate independent investigation and regulatory response to smart meter harm represents a decision to compromise health and the environment though failure to integrate precaution and emerging science into public policy.
“Heightened awareness, interest, and engagement on the part of the public at large” and “the development of skills to critically assess arguments, express a point of view, and engage in the democratic process” are recommended.

Did You Know? The Court Decision Against the Federal Communications Commission: Health and the Environment
In 2021, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) lost a federal lawsuit concerning its reliance on 1996 guidelines. The U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C. ruled that the FCC’s decision not to re-assess the adequacy of 1996 exposure guidelines was “arbitrary, capricious, and not evidence-based.”
The court reviewed over 11,000 pages of evidence in the landmark case.
Yet the wireless infrastructure keeps on coming.
Informed Communities and Engaged Activism: May 2023 Massachusetts Town Meeting Citizen Petitions
The FCC lawsuit where the court ruled that the agencies reliance on 1996 guidelines was not evidence-based still has not been addressed.
Residents in Great Barrington, Sheffield, Upton, Chester, and Millis have placed citizen’s petitions on the warrant for their annual town meetings in Massachusetts in early May.

In Great Barrington, Sheffield, and Upton, “Applications will be considered incomplete until the FCC lawsuit is addressed.”
Other informed communities are opposing cell towers on school properties, addressing local zoning, and working with legislators on regulations to protect human health and the environment.
Innovative communities and organizations are focusing on the regulatory gap identified in the FCC lawsuit: We do not have adequate regulations for protection of human and health and the environment and the FCC has not been held accountable.
Millis, MA will cast votes at their annual town meeting about sending letters of concern to state and federal decision makers. The effort puts the issue before the public, who may be unaware of the safety controversy.
Environmental Exposures are Increasing
In addition, communities are discovering that 5G is now active, without necessarily requiring hearings for the siting of antennas and towers. The industry is reportedly using new spectrum, faster cellular networks, and WiFi, insidiously increasing exposures, without public hearings and notification. Towns and cities have been caught unaware of the increased densification of exposures, as have residents and their health care providers.
Tinnitus, headaches, sleep disturbance and other symptoms have been associated with increased exposures to radio frequency radiation.
