More Than A Dozen International Actions

Thousands of People to Form Human Chain Around U.K. Parliament to Demand Freedom for Assange explains:

As part of a global campaign for Julian’s release, over a dozen international actions have been planned in solidarity, with U.S.-based supporters holding a rally at the Department of Justice in Washington, DC featuring several high-profile speakers.

Actions are also planned for Melbourne, Denver, San Francisco, Rio de Janeiro, Ottawa, and Tulsa with more expected to be announced. The D.C. protesters will be calling on Attorney General Merrick Garland to drop the charges against Julian Assange while also denouncing the U.S. government’s campaign against Assange as supporters around the world demand Hands Off Assange

The legal matter is in a crucial phase according to John Rees, who is helping to organize the event. According to Bloomberg, Rees told the PA news agency: “We need to redouble our efforts to persuade the UK Parliament to intervene and halt Julian’s extradition.”

Revealing war crimes is not a crime.

WikiLeaks editor and publisher Julian Assange is facing a 175 year sentence for publishing truthful information in the public interest.

Julian Assange is being sought by the current US administration for publishing US government documents which exposed war crimes and human rights abuses. The politically motivated charges represent an unprecedented attack on press freedom and the public’s right to know – seeking to criminalise basic journalistic activity.

If convicted Julian Assange faces a sentence of 175 years, likely to be spent in isolation which would drive him to commit suicide.

UK District Judge Vanessa Baraitser ruled it would be oppressive to extradite him to the United States of America and refused to extradite him, yet the case eventually moved to the UK Supreme Court where it overruled the decision and Assange’s extradition request moved forward to the UK Home Sectretary.

Priti Patel has now signed the request to extradite Assange.

Assange’s legal team are fighting the extradition and have now filed an appeal to the High Court. The High Court now must approve the grounds of the appeal.

If the UK extradites Assange it would violate Article 4 of the US-UK extradition treaty which bars extradition for political offences.

Extraditing Julian Assange to the United States would kill him.

The UN working group on arbitrary detention issued a statement saying that “the right of Mr. Assange to personal liberty should be restored”.

Massimo Moratti of Amnesty International stated: “Were Julian Assange to be extradited or subjected to any other transfer to the USA, Britain would be in breach of its obligations under international law.”

Human Rights Watch published an article saying, “The only thing standing between an Assange prosecution and a major threat to global media freedom is Britain. It is urgent that it defend the principles at risk.”

The NUJ has stated that the “US charges against Assange pose a huge threat, one that could criminalise the critical work of investigative journalists & their ability to protect their sources”.

Dear participants,

We are just a few days away from the big event. Saturday’s action will be the first ever human chain around the Houses of Parliament. I will be appearing on several shows and interviews to get the word out, but equally as important if not more is your ability as participants to bring company. I know of at least one person travelling from abroad with three family members.

I think this is a good goal for each of us–aim to bring three other people with you. There is no requirement to sign up, so people can simply show up on the day, though signing up is recommended to stay informed and know what to expect (https://dontextraditeassange.com/human-chain/).

Fingers crossed the weather forecast will hold for Saturday: a gentle breeze, sunny intervals and 17°C. Not bad for October in London! Keep an eye on the weather and remember to dress with the windchill factor in mind, especially as many of you may be located on a bridge or facing directly onto the Thames.
There will be stewards to direct you on the day. They will be wearing high-visibility vests.

Transport: Some of you may be affected by the rail strike. If you are travelling by train to central London do check the rail network’s updates and please plan alternative means of transport if necessary. Plan to arrive with plenty of time to spare. Some supporters are travelling by car from Cornwall and Bournemouth and are offering a lift. Please get in touch if you are driving from outside London and are able to do the same. There are coaches travelling from Birmingham and Liverpool. Get in touch if you want to travel on those coaches.

Post pictures on the day on social media and use the hashtag #SurroundParliament. Bring chalk to write messages on the ground as there may be some waiting around. Bring yellow ribbons as these are the symbol for political prisoners. You can write on them with markers and tie them or use them to extend the chain if needed.

If you are a student in London and want to get the word out on your campus, get in touch as we might be able to supply flyers and posters. Speak to your neighbour on the day! This is an opportunity to connect with people in the real world who are passionate about justice and fairness, who are willing to leave their keyboard and take part in a solidarity action and who aren’t afraid of expressing their opinion.

After we have formed the human chain, stand by at the end for instructions about gathering in Parliament square. Dear Attendees,

Thank you for pledging to join the human chain this Saturday, we are hoping more of you will join who haven’t signed up yet. Here’s just a few notes to let you know what to expect when you arrive in Parliament Square, London, GB SW1P.

The assembly time is 1pm but we expect people to start arriving from 12.30. Our stewards will direct you to the end of the chain and ask you to take your place. There will be some travel disruptions on the rail network due to strike action on 8 October so please check your travel for the day and plan accordingly: (nearest tube: Westminster / buses: 12,159,453)

A team of stewards will be at Westminster station to direct people to the chain.

When everyone has arrived and it’s time to link arms and form the chain, megaphone sirens and air horns will give the signal. Another signal will sound to bring the protest to a close after Stella Assange and others have made statements to the press. The protest will be finished after our video team has had the opportunity to film the whole chain.

Assange Warned About AI Threat in 2018

“Before his links to the world were cut by his Ecuadorian hosts, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange gave an interview on how technological advances are changing humankind. He said global surveillance will soon be totally unavoidable.

The interview was provided to RT by organizers of the World Ethical Data Forum in Barcelona. Assange, who is currently stranded in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London with no outside communication except with his legal team, has a pretty grim outlook on where humanity is going. He says it will soon be impossible for any human being to not be included in global databases collected by governments and state-like entities.

This generation being born now… is the last free generation. You are born and either immediately or within say a year you are known globally. Your identity in one form or another –coming as a result of your idiotic parents plastering your name and photos all over Facebook or as a result of insurance applications or passport applications– is known to all major world powers.

“A small child now in some sense has to negotiate its relationship with all the major world powers… It puts us in a very different position. Very few technically capable people are able to live apart, to choose to live apart, to choose to go their own way,” he added. “It smells a bit like totalitarianism – in some way.”

The capacity to collect and process information about people has been growing exponentially and will continue to grow fast, he stated. With advancements in applying Artificial Intelligence (AI) to big data, the next logical step is coming.

“Look at what Google and Baidu and Tencent and Amazon and Facebook are doing. They are basically open-cut harvesting the knowledge of humankind as we express it, when we communicate with each other… This classical model, which people in academia call ‘surveillance capitalism’… has changed now.

“It’s a really very important and severe economic change. Which is to take the surveillance capitalism model and transform it instead into a model that does not yet have a name, an ‘AI model’. Which is to use this vast reservoir to train Artificial Intelligences of different kinds. This would replace not only intermediary sectors –most things you do on the internet is in a sense more efficient intermediation– but to take over the transport sector, or create whole new sectors.”

Assange also predicted that the scale of hostile activities through cyberspace will see a breakout point as soon as AI is trained to sufficiently automate hacking attacks.

“There is no border [online]. It’s 220 milliseconds from New York to Nairobi. Why would there ever be peace in such a scenario?” he said. “[Entities online] are creating their own borders using cryptography. But the size of the attack surface for any decent-sized organization, the number of people, different types of software and hardware it has to pull inside itself means that it is very hard to establish.””
