The Abstract episode 6 “Phillip Burton: The Founder of San Francisco’s Political Establishment”

By Peter A. Kirby

On this week’s episode of The Abstract we will examine the life and political career of U.S. Congressman Phillip Burton (1926-1983). For many years, first in the California state assembly then in the U.S. House of Representatives, Phillip Burton represented San Francisco. During his tenures he blazed trails for a new breed of progressives who went on to dominate San Francisco politics. This is the first in a series of episodes examining the history and current state of progressive politics in San Francisco. Please join us on this journey of discovery.
