Facebook to Release Smart Watch with 2 Cameras for Those Who Don’t Mind How Much the Company Is Already Spying on Them

By B.N. Frank

Facebook is no stranger to user privacy violations.  In fact, just last month the company was exposed for secretly tracking people through their iPhones.  Nevertheless, the company is still planning to release its first ever smart watch to compete with other smart watches that are also extremely privacy invasive.

From MSN:

Facebook’s first-ever smartwatch will reportedly have two cameras and roll out next summer

  • Sources told The Verge Facebook has spent $1 billion on a smartwatch since 2019.
  • The product will have two cameras that can detach from the wrist to take photos and videos, the report said.
  • Such a product would put Facebook head-to-head with Apple, which dominates the smartwatch market.

Facebook is planning on rolling out its first-ever smartwatch in summer 2022, according to a Wednesday report from The Verge’s Alex Heath.

The Information reported in February that Facebook was working on such an item, but Wednesday’s report sheds more light on the future project.

The watch will have a display and two cameras that can be detached to take photos and video just like you would on a smartphone or GoPro camera. The content could then be shared on Facebook and Instagram, as well as other apps owned by the company. Facebook employees have said the watch could cost around $400, according to The Verge, but that price tag could change.

Sources told the outlet that Facebook has spent about $1 billion to develop the first iteration of the smartwatch since 2019.

Facebook declined to comment.

Facebook has a long history of shenanigans in addition to privacy violations.  Recent examples include planning to launch an Instagram page for kids under 13 despite increasing opposition, blocking posts from people of color and censoring “Vaccine Hesitancy” posts on its platform.

Despite all of this, the company obviously believes that there will be people who want to buy their smart watches anyway.  After all, experts have been warning for years about privacy violations from all smart watches (also known as activity trackers and fitness trackers) and people are still wearing them.

Of course, a recent health warning may deter people.  Last month the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned that smart watches and cell phones should be kept at least 6 inches away from medical implants to avoid electromagnetic interference which could even lead to death!

“Smart” devices also emit harmful electromagnetic radiation.  Over the years there have been complaints about that with the watches too.  People have reported burns, rashes, shocks, and other undesirable symptoms (see 1, 2, 3) while wearing them.  Some complaints have led to recalls.  Still want a smart watch?
