The Second Virus

Op-Ed by Janet Phelan

“Who you are will overtake you. You become a monster so that the monster will not break you.”– U2, “Peace on Earth”

It is easy to delineate the name of the first virus, the one sweeping the globe, decimating whole economies and wreaking havoc on individuals, cultures and communities. This virus is said to have caused 2.3 million deaths worldwide and, if you believe the news, shows no signs of letting up.

Every day, we hear of new virus-connected horrors. It mutates and its mutations combine, thereby doing a clever detour around our best efforts to mitigate its impact, through our dedicated vaccination programs. The vaccines don’t seem to work on the variants, which puts us back at the starting point. In fact, the vaccines may not protect us much at all.  Pregnant women lose their babies, if not to the virus then to the vaccine. Our parents waste away, alone and abandoned, in the facilities into which we stuck them, never dreaming they would become hotbeds of infection. And when they expire in the homes, we may not even be told.

ANOTHER VIRUS

However, along with the coronavirus (corona means crown and is apparently aptly named) there is a second virus which has emerged. This virus has no name. Its genetic structure has not been isolated and its method of transmission is unclear. This virus attacks our souls.

It has attacked the conscience of our leaders, our news reporters and indeed anyone in a position of power. Once it has embedded itself at the apex of society, it proceeds in a downward spiral, infecting at random.

When Chris Hedges wrote the following, it highlighted the “trickle down” effects of this second virus on society at large and the involvement of those we have come to trust:

We now live in a nation where doctors destroy health, lawyers destroy justice, universities destroy knowledge, governments destroy freedom, the press destroys information, religion destroys morals, and our banks destroy the economy.

The second virus was first noted years ago in the conduct of those in the legal system, specifically lawyers and judges. Remember the “shark” jokes about lawyers? You can make the same jokes now about judges and prosecutors.  It’s become clear that the courts had gone off the rails and are involved in protecting certain kinds of behaviors, such as embezzlement and even murder, rather than routing out those committing these crimes and appropriately punishing them. This could not have been made more stunningly obvious than when Philip Esformes, convicted for using his position as nursing home owner to steal from not only his clients but from the government itself, was set free this past year only months following his imprisonment.

When it was disclosed that judges are regularly paid off, under the table, to throw cases this information was suppressed. The US Attorney’s office in a number of states has been presented with facts supporting the conclusion that many judges are now regularly being covertly rewarded in a number of ways to execute the laws (pun intended) and every US Attorney’s office that has been given this documentation has refused it.

The virus is also evident in the immunity granted police officers when they brutally attack or kill unarmed citizens. These same officers stood idly by as outraged Americans burnt down whole sections of cities in protest this past year. It has been suggested that they were ordered to do so.

This brings into focus how this virus functions. It functions by deferring responsibility for one’s actions to others. “Acting under orders” is a favored mantra of those infected by the virus.

The attempt to attribute responsibility away from oneself and onto an authority is a chief attribute of the virus. It indicates that the virus is now fully embedded and has infected the individual who is in the process of denying his own humanity and his individual obligations as a human being.

This is how soul capture works. You’re not responsible, or so you say.

THERE’S MONEY TO BE MADE IN SELLING YOUR SOUL

And while there is indeed money to be made in relinquishing your conscience, this is not the only mechanism at play. Being monetarily rewarded for abandoning your obligations to others is certainly a hefty temptation but not the only game in town. There is also the matter of one’s personal protection and survivability.

It has been well documented that those held captive by criminals and terrorists tend to begin to identify with and serve their captors. The term, Stockholm Syndrome, refers to a 1973 high-profile hostage situation in which the hostages came to bond with their captors. After their release, the hostages refused to testify against their captors and  began raising money for their defense.

According to Heathline,

With this syndrome, hostages or abuse victims may come to sympathize with their captives. This is the opposite of the fear, terror, and disdain that might be expected from the victims in these situations.

Over the course of time, some victims do come to develop positive feelings toward their captors. They may even begin to feel as if they share common goals and causes. The victim may begin to develop negative feelings toward the police or authorities. They may resent anyone who may be trying to help them escape from the dangerous situation they’re in.

Healthline goes on to report that “Many psychologists and medical professionals consider Stockholm syndrome a coping mechanism, or a way to help victims handle the trauma of a terrifying situation.”

A TRAUMATIZED WORLD

If one accepts the conclusion that entire societies are now traumatized through the actions of their captors, otherwise known as “their leaders,” one can begin to understand the psychological mechanisms that are turning whole societies into hostages and willingly obedient servants of problematic agendas. According to Nils Melzer, the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, the preponderance of torture in so-called civilized societies can be traced to large -scale trauma. Melzer writes:

The need to defend against threats to individual or public security is the predominant utilitarian basis upon which torture and ill-treatment are justified. One can see where the threats inherent first in the attacks of September 11 and now in the “public health emergency” of the pandemic would provide sufficient basis for the preconditions for torture cited here. (Report A/75/179 – E – A/75/179)

Inflicting torture and abuse is another sign of this second virus, the one that infects one’s conscience and one’s soul. There are now hundreds of thousands of individuals, world-wide, who claim to have been put into non-consensual weapons testing programs and are stating that they are being tortured through the use of these weapons against them. Some of these individuals have tracked their torturers to FBI Fusion centers and military operatives. Others are claiming that ordinary people, such as their neighbors, have been enlisted as torturers.

HITLER PAINTED ROSES

Those infected with the second virus may appear to be normal and may have “good” attributes. A sort of compartmentalization, common in trauma victims, may enable them to be “good citizens” and then turn into a purveyor of lies, torture and abuse without an observable transformation.

It is commonly understood that humans are social animals and, as such, are open to social influence. Setting aside the financial rewards for betrayal and abuse for a moment, humans can be rewarded by social approval of their peers, or punished through shaming mechanisms. There is also potential for independent thought to be mitigated through chemical means, such as fluoridation, alcohol and psychiatric drugs.

However you frame it, betrayal and abuse are indicators of soul capture. For those resistant to the religious implications of that phrase, you can reframe it as “following orders,” “going along to get along,” or “the popular thing to do.” It all equals the same thing. You’ve been infected by the second virus and are now a willing participant in the destruction of other people.

You can, however, recover.

It takes a dedicated effort to observe your own behaviors and to plumb the depths of your motives. It takes reconnecting with whatever you might want to call it—your higher self, your conscience, the Divine, the Universe. It takes deliberation and effort. It may not be easy. But for the sake or your own individual passage and for the sake of this endangered species called humanity, it may be the only route available. It may be uncomfortable and it may, in fact, be dangerous.

But consider the alternative.
