Utilities, etc. v FCC: 5G Will Cause “Unreasonably High” Potential for RF Interference and Undermine Grid Reliability and Safety

By B.N. Frank

Freaked out yet?  Utility companies claim that 5G spectrums for unlicensed and untested WiFi applications could interfere with their smart meters and grids which are extremely problematic already (fires, explosions, etc.).

In 2019, AEP filed a lawsuit against the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) because of this.  Other utility companies and organizations have done so as well.

Lawsuit challenges conclusions on harmful interference

Electric utilities have asked a federal appeals court to vacate a Federal Communications Commission order that opened airwaves long held by energy and public safety assets to mass-market wireless devices and to force the FCC to put in place better safeguards before making those airwaves available for unlicensed use.

US airwaves known as spectrum are the invisible infrastructure needed for wireless services. New rules adopted by the FCC in April make 1,200 megahertz of spectrum on the 6 GHz band available for unlicensed operations. That band houses private communications networks deployed by power plants, electric transmission lines, gas pipelines, control centers, substations and other energy assets for their mission-critical operations.

The FCC order was strongly opposed by power companies who asserted throughout the rulemaking proceeding that a flood of new unlicensed users on the 6 GHz band would create an “unreasonably high” potential for radio frequency interference that could disrupt communications systems that underpin the safety and reliability of the grid.

Other 5G warnings have been issued by federal agencies and credible experts who say that the technology threatens aviation safety, jobs, national security, public safety, and weather forecasting accuracy (see 1, 2, 3).  The FCC has ignored them as well.  Recently, the Government Accountability Office also identified major challenges with 5G deployment.

In 2019, telecom executives gave congressional testimony that they have NO independent scientific evidence that it’s biologically safe.  Research has determined that it’s not.  This being the case, American opposition is also increasing due to health and environmental risks (see 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6).

Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and several American tribal groups filed a 5G lawsuit against the FCC (see 1, 2). Municipalities have filed 5G lawsuits against the FCC.  Some have passed resolutions to ban deployment until studies prove it’s safe (see 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) and ordinances to limit and/or control installation.  State representatives in Hawaii and Illinois have also introduced 5G bills to protect constituents.

In regard to “Smart” Meters – tens of millions have already been installed throughout the U.S. (electric, gas, and water) so it’s likely that they are already on your home and throughout your community. There have been so many complaints about them (see 1, 2) that many utility companies now allow customers to “opt-out.” Online documentary Take Back Your Power provides more details.
