As the holidays approach, Oregon Governor Kate Brown has encouraged residents to call the police on their neighbors if they break any of the state’s newly passed COVID-19 restrictions that come with the consequence of a large fine and potential jail time.
“This is no different than what happens if there’s a party down the street and it’s keeping everyone awake,” Brown said late last week. “What do neighbors do? They call law enforcement because it’s too noisy. This is just like that. It’s like a violation of a noise ordinance.”
The restrictions put in place last week by an executive order signed by Brown are considered a two week “freeze” on activities such as going to bars and restaurants and limits households to no more than 6 people.
Brown said she would work with state police and local law enforcement to make sure residents follow the restrictions which could land violators up to 30 days in jail or a fine of up to $1,250 in what would be considered a Class C misdemeanor conviction
“In terms of individuals, I am not asking you,” Brown said last week. “I am ordering you.”
Critics have slammed the Governor for her draconian orders, with one county official saying the measures treat residents “as second-rate slaves in our own homes.”
Tootie Smith, the soon-to-be chair of the Clackamas Board of County Commissioners, on Fox News after saying she plans to have as many people over for Thanksgiving as she can find: "We don't need to be treated as second-rate slaves in our own homes."

It is unclear if Brown will be able to convince police to enforce the restrictions as at least one Sheriff’s office has openly disagreed with going along with the executive order.
“We recognize that we cannot arrest or enforce our way out of the pandemic, and we believe both are counterproductive to public health goals,” the Marion County Sheriff’s office said in a statement on Friday.

Oregon decriminalized the possession/use of drugs such as heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine will no longer be punishable by jail time.
Having a gathering of more than 6 people under their new Covid 19 law, could carry a $1,250 fine.
