Police Officer Helps Homeless Man Struggling to Shave in the Rain

By Amanda Froelich

Since the topic of police brutality became a hot button issue, many officers have gone out of their way to demonstrate that not all cops are bad. In Detroit, Michigan, for instance, an officer was spotted helping a less fortunate man shave during a rain shower.

The heartwarming photo was captured by Jill Metiva Shafer of Saginaw Township, Michigan. When asked why she chose to capture the moment of kindness, she told Good Morning America:

I took the picture because I thought it was such a kind, unselfish thing for an officer to do. With all the negativity that police officers get, I wanted to show them in a positive light.

Shafer explained that she and her family had just arrived for the Detroit Tigers game at the Comerica Park ballpark when it began to rain. That’s when she noticed Officer Jeremy Thomas helping out Stanley Nelson, 62.

“I walked up and I said, ‘Excuse me, sir’ and at that point, he’s like, ‘Ok, ok, I’ll leave and I said, ‘No, do you need some help?’” Thomas told ABC affiliate WXYZ. “And he turned around blindly and said, ‘Yes, thank you. God bless.’”

According to ABC News, Nelson was attempting to shave after receiving a razor and shaving cream as a handout. But, with no mirror, he was struggling. Nelson told WXYZ:

“What he did for me, that was alright. I really appreciate that because I’m going through my thing and I feel bad about myself, but I’m going to be alright.”

“God’s going to bless him for doing that for me,” Nelson added.

The moral of the story is that good people do exist. And sometimes, they might even be police officers. One thing nearly everyone can agree on is that the world would be a much better place if people lended a hand when they witnessed others struggling.
