Another Study Confirms Diet Drinks Could Increase Risk for Heart Attack and Stroke Warns American Heart and Stroke Associations

By B.N. Frank

Last May, Waking Times published a great article by Dr. Mercola about how artificial sweeteners make people fat and sick.  The title of the article was appropriately:  “Reconfirmed:  Artificial Sweeteners Make You Fat and Sick.”

New research was released that once again confirms the sick part.  From CNN:

Drinking two or more diet beverages a day linked to high risk of stroke, heart attacks

(CNN)More bad news for diet soda lovers: Drinking two or more of any kind of artificially sweetened drinks a day is linked to an increased risk of clot-based strokes, heart attacks and early death in women over 50, according to a new study by the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association.

The risks were highest for women with no history of heart disease or diabetes and women who were obese or African-American.

Previous research has shown a link between diet beverages and stroke, dementia, Type 2 diabetes, obesity and metabolic syndrome, which can lead to heart disease and diabetes.

Again – this seems to be in agreement with other research and warnings from years ago8 years ago!

Summary: Drinking diet soda daily is linked to a higher risk of stroke, heart attack and vascular-related deaths, according to new research. High salt intake may double the risk of ischemic stroke, independent of sodium’s role in hypertension.

Even if you drink diet soda — instead of the sugar variety — you could still have a much higher risk of vascular events compared to those who don’t drink soda, according to research presented at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference 2011.

Research has also confirmed that consumption also leads to increased risk of dementia:

Researchers from Boston’s University School of Medicine confirmed that people who drink a can of artificially-sweetened soft drink a day were at three times the risk of deadly stroke and dementia.

This study also discovered that diet soft drinkers were 2.9 times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s and Dementia.

So are drinking diet beverages really worth being fat, sick, and memory-impaired?  I remember when my friends and I switched from regular soft drinks to diet.  It was in junior high.  I only remember liking diet soda after I got used to its unnatural metallic taste.  I gave it up about 30 years and can’t say I’ve missed it at all.  Good thing, huh.
