Molly McKew taught me something last night.
I’m an information terrorist.
McKew has a story up on Wired, a magazine and website owned by Condé Nast Publications.
She begins with the Brett Kavanaugh kerfuffle and from there identifies several terrorists.
Among those cheering on the hate-trollers were many familiar faces from the sewers of the modern far-right disinformation metropolis: dandified Republican rogue (and likely Mueller investigee) Roger Stone, his alt-media protégés Mike Cernovich and Jack Posobiec, anarchist turned Kremlin propaganda employee turned Bernie backer turned Trump backer Cassandra Fairbanks, and breathless Infowars conspiracist-in-chief Alex Jones. And not surprisingly, alt-right super-troll Chuck Johnson had his own connection to players in the scandal.
McKew believes our entire way of life is threatened by a new form of terrorism that invades the mind through social media and the internet.
This is an operational unit of information terrorists helping to transform the way Americans consume news in the age of Trump—some of the central nodes that give order to the information deluge and around which bot armies and human amplification networks can be organized, wiped out, reconstituted, and armed for attack.
What Americans read and consider news and non-news is none of Ms. McKew’s business. If I want to consult Green Eggs and Ham before shuffling into a polling place, that’s my business.
McKew argues that exiling information terrorists from the corporate social media kingdom will not silence the cadre and finally put an end to its “digital violence.”
Some call this trolling, but that term is far too mild. These are not the proverbial hoodied losers in some basement, engaging with other humans only via videogames and 8chan. This cadre has hundreds of thousands of followers and devotees on Twitter, Instagram, Gab, and other social media, many of whom will post and amplify their views even after the personalities themselves are kicked off the platforms for threats and rules violations. The network also takes advantage of affiliations with increasingly mainstream partisan media outlets that will subscribe to any argument that suits their current agenda.
After crawling through the QAnon and Pizzagate swamp, McKew concludes there is a huge conspiracy afoot. She conjures up trench warfare and the psychological terror of Stalin to make her point.
“The immediate costs are already visible in America. The long-term costs will be devastating. One need only look to Stalin’s campaigns of internal psychological terror waged in captive nations to understand the price can be inconceivably high,” she writes.
It’s a massive conspiracy to get inside your head and through the voodoo of social media and Facebook ads shape your political convictions and thus on Election Day make sure you vote for the inheritors of Stalin’s terror.
Although McKew—a former employee of Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili—has not explicitly called for rounding up this new generation of terrorists (who have miraculously turned ones and zeros into a weapon of mass destruction), her screed insinuates something drastic must be done if we are going to save America from white nationalists and the defenders of Brett Kavanaugh.
If Donald Trump is to be taken down along with Roger Stone, Mike Cernovich, Jack Posobiec, Cassandra Fairbanks, and millions of other digital terrorists, action must be taken.
