Not So Truthful Ads From Yesteryear: A Review of Merchandising Hype

By Catherine J. Frompovich

Truth in advertising! What’s that? Something that apparently was disregarded in the not-too-distant past, which led gullible consumers to believe and to accept the hype about products which today are banned or no longer viewed in the same fashion as before.

Take particular notice of the advertisement directly below which bragged it was the smooth tasting cigarette expectant mothers craved. Holy smokes! Have things change. But we also can remember that Camel cigarettes were the ones most doctors preferred and smoked!

DDT
How long has DDT been banned as a household pesticide?

“DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) was outlawed in Britain in 1986 and banned as a pesticide worldwide under the Stockholm Convention in 2001 after it was discovered to be dangerous to wildlife and the environment.”Banned pesticide DDT may raise risk of Alzheimer’s disease

How politically incorrect could they have been back then?
Ladies, what do you think of this ad?

Asbestos!
How many buildings have been rehabbed or torn down due to asbestos contamination?
This ad proves what was ‘gospel’ truth at one time has been proven to be a ‘hellish’ lie.

OMG! What kind of breast tissue damage was accrued and/or done from the electromagnetic frequencies [EMFs] directed into the breasts of females who fell for such malarkey advertising?

Radium Fertilizer!
What the heck was that all about?

“[E]xposure to higher levels of radium over a long period of time may result in harmful effects including anemia, cataracts, fractured teeth, cancer (especially bone cancer), and death. Some of these effects may take years to develop and are mostly due to gamma radiation.” (Source)

ARSENIC
Can you imagine promoting and advertising a toxic element as a complexion beauty aide?
Those wafers were ‘attested by physicians’ to purify the blood!

Arsenic Poisoning

This ad certainly must have been an exaggeration, as today there are prescription drug ads to increase penis size, since something happened to males that they “can’t get it up” anymore!

Dehydrated Water

This proves P.T. Barnum, the mid-19th century American showman, was correct when he said,
“There’s a sucker born every minute.”

Really!
Vaseline is made from petroleum and called petroleum jelly.
“Petroleum jelly, commonly known by the most popular brandname Vaseline, is a derivative of oil refining. Originally found coating the bottom of oil rigs in the mid-1800s, it’s a byproduct of the oil industry and therefore an unsustainable resource.”
Petroleum Jelly May Not Be As Harmless As You Think

Nothing like kick-starting young kids on to alcohol; thanks Grandpa!
This ad even refers to beer as a tonic no medicine can equal.

All the above advertisements go back in time when, apparently, there were no advertising regulations; thus the various regulatory agencies came into being. However, some things seemingly never change, especially when vested interests pay their way to get consensus opinions and pseudoscience marketed and mainstreamed as ‘science’ as the microwave, pharmaceutical and vaccine industries are prone to do today.
