Airlines Flight Crews Pollution Sickness Syndrome

By Catherine J. Frompovich

What’s making airlines flight crews sick?

Reports have been surfacing about cabin crews complaining regarding new, corporate-issued uniforms making them sick.  Other crew members have filed lawsuits [1] regarding what’s known as “aerotoxic syndrome.” [2] And now, American Airlines pilots are complaining their new, corporate-issued uniforms literally are making them sick.

So, what could be involved in all the above?  Well, from my perspective as a consumer health researcher and writer, and a retired holistic health professional, plus researching various aspects having negative health effects upon humans, I think I safely can offer some suggestions as to what may be going on, since the airlines and their suppliers can’t seem to figure out what’s happening.

Numerous friends and associates have shared with me how they became sick with flu-like symptoms after a flight, especially long flights.  Most individuals suffer with respiratory problems, e.g., bronchitis, pneumonia, sinusitis, etc.  Of course, it’s well-known in holistic health circles that many flu-like symptoms often reflect the body’s exposure to toxins.  Many people often experience sweating an hour or so after eating, or can’t control the urge to fall asleep.  Furthermore, they can’t seem to figure out what’s going on.  Those symptoms often are ‘classic’ symptomologies of exposure to toxins breathed in, eaten or drunk, or having direct skin contact.

Chemicals are ubiquitous; we find them everywhere: Agriculture and in prepared/boxed/canned food production, except organically-grown; municipal drinking water; outdoor ambient air contains toxins from vehicular exhausts, all types of industry manufacturing, nuclear power plants, and weather geoengineering chemtrails fallout via air particles we breathe, rain water and snow.  What are chemtrails?  Haven’t you seen ‘sky graffiti’, which some think are contrails?  True airplane exhaust contrails cannot and do not fan out to become blanket clouds that obscure sunlight from hitting earth and humans.  Here’s a collection of chemtrails photos in this article.

According to “Stop Spraying California,” [6] here’s a list of contaminants found in chemtrail sprays:

What Do Chemtrails Contain?

Independent tests across the U. S. have shown chemtrails to contain the following substances:

Aluminum (known to cause tinnitus)
Arsenic
Barium salts
Cadium [Cadmium]
Desiccated human blood cells
Ethylene dibromide
Lead
Magnesium
Mercury
Mold spores
Mycoplasma
Polymer fibers
Radio cesium
Sharp titanium shards
Stonthium [Strontium]
Submicron particles
Unidentified living bacteria
Uranium
And many other toxins

Can you imagine your plane flying into one of those deliberately-sprayed plumes with hyper-toxic ingredients coming into the cabin?  No wonder many airline passengers are experiencing “aerotoxic syndrome.”  I empathize with flight crews exposed to them daily!

There is indoor chemical pollution from room air fresheners; all scented products, e.g., candles; formaldehyde in upholstered furniture, wall-to-wall carpeting and padding, rugs; paints and varnishes; personal products, e.g., perfumes, colognes, hairspray is a big problem; new clothing that’s not been laundered; leather products, etc.  I discuss such issues and problems in great length in my 2009 book, Our Chemical Lives And The Hijacking Of Our DNA, A Probe Into What’s Probably Making Us Sick.

Natural and Non-Toxic Products. Up to 50% Off – Every Day (Ad)

So, what do I think is going on at 35,000 feet in the air?  There’s a confluence of out-gassing sources making what I’d call the “perfect pollution storm” resulting from modern day lifestyles and technology consequences.

Regarding those new uniforms

Most, if not all, cloth or material from which clothing is made goes through a finishing process called “sizing” or “finishing products,” which out gasses formaldehyde fumes. [3] Formaldehyde is toxic and a probable human carcinogen!  You, the wearer, breathe the gas out fumes!  To give you an idea of how many finishing chemicals can be used in clothing, check out this supplier.

Many clothing items, including uniforms, are made from synthetic fabrics, which include polyester, acrylic, nylon, rayon, acetate, spandex, latex, Orlon and Kevlar.  …. Chemicals used to make synthetic fabric include sodium hydroxide and carbon disulfide, which are derived from coal, oil, or natural gas. [4]

Inflight food service

Any inflight foods most likely contain genetically modified ‘phoods’ or their sources, which contain glyphosate, the herbicide which plays havoc with the human intestinal microbiome—gut.  As far as I’ve been able to ascertain, we do not know whether glyphosate and/or its metabolites have the ability to interact with or potentiate other toxins.

EMFs/RFs/ELFs pilot exposure

Have you ever noticed, when boarding a plane, how the cockpit looks like ‘computer central’?  All those electronics pilots have to deal with obviously emit electromagnetic frequencies.

Magnetic Fields in Aircraft Are Generated from:

the jet engine itself
cockpit computers
electronic sensors
communications equipment
electrical wiring throughout the cabin
high levels of static electricity generated in the fuselage

Random measurements taken inside planes in-flight reveal dangerous radiation, sometimes exceeding 50 mG (compare that with .5-2.5 mG, the amount the EPA deems safe.) The highest radiation levels are generally found near the walls and floors. [5]

EMFs/RFs/ELFs radiation waves cause what’s called non-thermal adverse health effects, one of which is to mess with the immune system—something cockpit crews are in constant contact with during every flight.  It is my contention their lay-overs do not allow sufficient time for their bodies to detox and recoup, therefore, all the above issues with food and new uniforms have put them into what some medical personnel probably would classify as electromagnetic hypersensitive (EHS) and their body is ‘talking’ to them by manifesting all sorts of allergic reactions.

Allergic reactions of any type have to be regarded as the body sending “feedback” it’s in some sort of ecological trouble: allergic reaction to a prescription or recreational drug; anaphylactic shock from either a hyper allergy to a food, i.e., peanuts, or a vaccine reaction; the immune system is compromised to the point where it needs detoxification and fortification, in my opinion.

The largest human body organ is our skin!  When something goes wrong with it, we better pay attention, as it’s telling us we may be in more trouble than we think.  I’d suggest all airline crews and frequent flier passengers get a complete blood screening panel to see what’s going on with their immune systems from being exposed to more toxins at 35,000 feet up than on the ground, I think, especially while ‘flying in a sealed tin can’.

  1. All reasons not to fly and you get xrayed before you get on the plane.

  2. some people claim our solar system is moving into a part of the galaxy that has a strong radiation field…i have heard about the flight sickness from that source, can’t remember what it is…but allegedly our solar system is being bombarded by radiation from without

  3. How many of the clothes manufacturers are working under US standards and how many from foreign sources?

  4. Also ADD all the radiation from different nuclear reactors around the world that have melted down INCLUDING Fukishima, which is STILL kept out of the MSM (and HOW MANY have been kept completely silent ?) all that radiation just circling the globe daily.

  5. I’ve taken a radiation detector on a few flights. On a normal day at altitude, radiaton fluctuates between 400-500 CPM !!! That is 1/2 of a mRem per MINUTE. That is 150 mR for a five hour flight! For those unaware of what this means, 200 CPM is alert level as in “evacuate the area.” This is why so many flight attendants have breast cancer. ALSO during a typical solar storm a friend measured 2600 counts per minute – so if you fly through a solar storm you’re being baked. From University of Iowa, the public should be exposed to no more than 100 mR per YEAR if not working in radiology specifically (for radioactive workers, the limits range between 5000-50000 mr/year or 5-50 Rads), but those poor flight attendants and pilots are limited as to the number of hours they can work because of this radiation exposure (although flight attendants are not taught about radiation levels in air during their training – although I think pilots must know this??). Aerotoxic syndrome from synthetic engine oil (where the air for the plane is pulled through) on top of that radiation … just WOW.
