More Americans than ever are aware of Congressional malfeasance; disapproval at all-time high

A whopping 14% of Americans approve of the way Congress is handling themselves, while an incredible 82% of Americans realize that our so-called representatives are not doing their jobs properly.

In a New York Times and CBS poll released today, it was revealed that the vast majority of Americans are now conscious of Congressional crimes and corruption.

Apparently the debt ceiling debacle, charade though it was, has made many in the United States aware of the fact that Congress has not been fulfilling their duties.

I just wish the poll told us how many Americans realized that raising the debt ceiling will do absolutely nothing for our debt rating or the economy.

It is clear that without a gutting of the cancerous military-industrial complex, corporate welfare programs, offshoring incentives, Pentagon “black budget” spending, and oil subsidies we will find ourselves without a reputable credit rating.

The Chinese have left nothing to the imagination on this issue, in fact the Governor of China’s central bank has actually said the United States’ debt problems are encumbering the global economic recovery, as I outlined in this article published today.

Similarly, Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s have issued dire warnings to the United States. Moody’s said that if the U.S. can’t bring its debt to GDP ratio down a significant amount, they will downgrade our credit rating.

However, some of our morally and intellectually bankrupt politicians continue to wage class warfare against the people of the United States.

If anyone in America was still holding on to the idea that we actually have representatives in Washington, or the delusion that we are not in a two-party dictatorship, I believe that the debt ceiling issue shattered their remaining misconceptions.

For instance, Senator Joseph Isadore “Joe” Lieberman, a former Democrat and current Independent, has called for the cutting of Social Security in order to maintain our insane defense spending.

This is yet another example of the warmongering class warfare waged by both parties against the American people who are unfortunate enough to reside outside of the billionaire elite class to which everyone in Congress and the Senate cater.

According to the poll, 72% of Americans polled did not approve of how Republicans handled the negotiations while 60% disapproved of how Congressional Democrats resolved it. 50% of the respondents said that the debt ceiling increase should have entailed tax increases along with spending cuts while 44% said it should have only involved spending cuts.

In reality, the spending of the American government is so out of control that only massive spending cuts could truly mitigate the damage. However, increasing tax revenue needs to be considered as well. This does not mean that any middle or lower class Americans should pay an additional cent in taxes. Even upper-middle class Americans do not need to be taxed more.

The increased tax revenue should come from the corporate parasites that practically run Washington. With the absurdist corporate welfare, offshoring incentives and subsidies, those who should be paying the largest amount of taxes get away without paying a cent.

Aside from the preferential treatment afforded to massive multinationals like GE, there are plenty of opportunities to enforce taxation without hurting the struggling Americans out there.

However, it seems that banks, the IRS and the federal government would rather bankrupt a small family and foreclose on their home before forcing a billionaire hedge fund manager to pay the taxes we all have to pay.

In fact, if just the top 25 hedge fund managers in America paid taxes like everyone else, the national deficit would be cut by a staggering $44 billion!

It is sad to see that our supposed representatives in Washington are so detached from the everyday reality of the American people. This was clearly evidenced by Obama’s ridiculous statement in July in which he claimed that 80% of Americans want more taxes.

This figure was completely false, but even if it was true I doubt that 80% of Americans would want more taxes on them — perhaps more taxes on corporations and those who weasel their way out of being economically raped by the IRS like the rest of us.

One of the more surprising figures in the poll was the number of people who thought the debt ceiling debate was more about gaining the political upper hand than saving America and the American economy. The vast majority of people, in fact 82% of those polled, said that this was the case.

While the poll included fewer than 1,000 Americans, I think that these figures show that Americans are beginning to wake up to the reality of the system in which we live. Our “representatives” do not represent us or our interests as working Americans. They serve their corporate masters and the special interest lobbies that have paid their way into office.

If we are lucky, maybe more Americans will start becoming so fed up with our corrupt governmental system that a nation-wide, non-partisan, peaceful uprising could occur. Maybe when police and military personnel realize that their families are getting screwed as well they will stop gathering revenue for their overlords and begin to see what they can do to actually protect and serve their communities.
