America moves on from oil spill; coast feels abandoned

Associated Press

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Gulf Coast residents say they are feeling abandoned now that the nation’s attention seems to be turning away from the oil spill.

The environmental and economic crisis doesn’t dominate news coverage like it did just a few weeks ago, and some in the Heartland say they’ve moved on to other things, like paying bills and work. Others say it would be easier to keep attention focused on the spill if they had a better idea of what the long-term effects will be.

Some people away from the coast are trying to keep public awareness high. A man in Delaware has started an organization to promote the Gulf’s recovery on the Internet.

But Gulf Coast caterer Chris Sherrill says he’s amazed how quickly Americans have forgotten the spill.
