The US has an Army, a Navy, an Air Force, a Marine Corps, and a Coast Guard. The House Armed Services Committee today voted to create a sixth branch of the American military, dubbed the US Space Corps, which would be wholly responsible for fighting wars in space.
The Space Corps would largely be split off from the Air Force, which was the last new branch of the military created, way back in 1947. The proposal is a continuation of the Pentagon’s increasing efforts in recent years to get heavy funding for space combat.
This comes just a couple of weeks after the Air Force created a Deputy Chief of Staff post of Space Operations, and significantly undercuts their efforts to be in charge of US military’s increasing focus on future space wars.
All of this, of course, has been happening despite no other country on the planet having invested significant resources in fighting in space, meaning there’s no plausible adversary for the US to fight in this future space war they’re bankrolling.
Misleading title – it was a House subcommittee that voted for this. It still needs to pass the full House the full Senate and get the President’s signature to take effect.
Appropriate. Air Force Veteran here – the US & Russia as well as others have been performing Military Operations in Space for Decades.
How stupid, so they will manage a few satellites basically, for how many new billions each year?

All one had to do was to re-name the U.S. Air Force, and call it the U.S. Aerospace Force!
Hundreds of millions saved on stationary, equipment allowances and routing, & it will allow for a Warrant Officer Corps to be reinstated due to the technical nature of the change in mission!
Oh great – now the US just pissed on the Alien community and they have to fight them too. Maybe Israel, Saudis, and the US can make an Air-Isis army to go into space – just like they did in the ME, Africa, and SE Asia in order to fight the Klingons. The deals cut with the various alien groups have already enabled advanced tech for the US military.
