CIA Psychologists Sued For Developing Torture Techniques Based On Studies Of Abused Dogs

This week, the ACLU filed a lawsuit against two psychologists that were responsible for integrating harsh torture techniques into a CIA program that was intended to extract information from prisoners. Many of the accusations against these psychologists come from the Senate report on CIA interrogations that was released less than a year ago.

According to the lawsuit, psychologists James E. Mitchell and John “Bruce” Jessen developed a CIA interrogation program that was in violation of international law. The torture program included starvation, waterboarding, beatings and other techniques that would be considered torture under international law.

Although the ACLU filed the lawsuit, they did so on behalf of three former CIA prisoners who were held captive and tortured in CIA prisons without any charges. One of the prisoners even died while he was being illegally detained and tortured at a prison in Afghanistan.

“They claimed that their program was scientifically based, safe and proven, when in fact it was none of those things. The program was unlawful and its methods barbaric,” Steven Watt, a senior staff attorney with the ACLU Human Rights Program, said in a statement.

According to the lawsuit, the psychologists used experiments on abused animals to develop techniques that would put prisoners in a state of “learned helplessness.”

A company formed by the two psychologists was paid over $81 million by the CIA, and even employed interrogators that worked for the CIA as independent contractors.

In a statement earlier this year after the Senate report came out, psychologist James E. Mitchell denied that the information was true.

“I completely understand why the human rights organizations in the United States are upset by the Senate report. I would be upset by it too, if it were true. What they are asking you to believe is that multiple directors of the CIA and analysts who made their living for years doing this lied to the federal government, or were too stupid to know that the intelligence they were getting wasn’t useful,” Mitchell said.

The CIA ended their contract with both psychologists and their company in 2010, but many of their techniques are still used.

  1. Ed Bernays was the 1st pseudo ‘psychologist’ that just happened to be a bona fide psychopath & coincidentally a nephew of Freud…. that took psychology from the sanctuary of academia where morals & ethics were held to an inviolate high standard….& proceeded to rip down that firewall & prostitute all ethics to a dank & fetid level of insidiously connived & contrived Mind F*k propaganda, that was the envy of Goebbels (link to Milgram Experiment)…& applied it into full manipulation of Mom & Pop America by slyly & surreptitiously stealing the accumulated knowledge about our collective consciousness- to the detriment of us all, as can be evidenced by these same kind of people sullying the profession with despicable & devious means by blatantly camouflaging & misrepresenting outright sadistic & perfunctory physical torture with Politically Correct [sic] euphemisms…Shame on them!…& may karma bite them on the ass…literally… & lock em up!…so they to can experience 1st hand some of the indignities & iniquities their participation visited upon brown skinned people…& by the same zionist’s that hijacked the Federal Govn’t on 9-11. …imo

    • Great rant and insight. Same mindset behind the psychiatrists involved in MK Ultra and shock doctrine studies such Ewen Cameron working with the CIA doing horrific experiments in Canada. There’s also Dr. Louis Jolyon West of Tavistock Institute fame and MK Ultra who was Sirhan Sirhan’s handler / psychiatrist and then later went on to be part of the team that “evaluated” Timothy McVeigh. I remember as a kid hearing about the torturous experiments the Japanese doctors performed during WWII, little did I know…
