The MonkeyParking app will have to delay their hopes of solving the parking problem in the greater San Francisco area because of a cease-and-desist order issued by the city.
MonkeyParking is one of several apps banned by the city that help drivers locate and reserve parking spots faster. The apps allow current occupants of a parking space to get paid to notify nearby drivers of their soon-to-be vacancy.
The city, clearly envious that they couldn’t figure out a way to profit from solving a problem on their own, declared the apps illegal.
San Francisco’s city attorney, Dennis Herrera, claims the apps are breaking the law because public parking spots can’t be leased without them getting all of the action.
Additionally, he said the ban is also because these apps “encourage drivers to use their mobile devices unsafely to engage in online bidding wars while driving.” Stop laughing. This isn’t satire.
Herrera threatened to fine anyone caught using the apps during this cease-and-desist period and even asked Apple to removed them from the iTunes app store – presumably to protect other metropolitan areas outside of his jurisdiction from such criminality.
We’ve seen incumbent cartels increasingly seek government’s protection against competition from voluntary apps like Uber and AirBnB. It’s getting quite easy to tell exactly who the government works for when they start banning voluntary apps that make people’s lives better.

Sorry, just because something disrupts peoples lives, that does not mean it is a good thing. Banning this type of app is a good thing. Since when is it ok to auction off public assets?
I have lived in and around San Francisco all my life. It is where I was born. I know San Francisco. In San Francisco if an app like this is allowed to be in use, it will create a situation where people will make careers out of squatting on parking spots all day and only allowing somebody to park there if they are paid. The same goes for New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and any other dense urban area.

If the urban planning of those “dense urban areas” by the “people’s servants” was not that horrible as it is, there won’t be a need for such apps and even for cars at all.
Right! People cannot assign rights to themselves. You cannot assign the right to deliver cab services just because you need money when there are municipal and state laws governing cab services.
People don’t get to make up whatever they want. That would be a corporate nightmare reality as companies would instantly monopolize everything for a profit.

I take exception with your reference to ‘civilization’. Civilization is nothing more than the use or threat of use of force to obtain compliance. Rules are necessary for society to function. We all inherently recognize the difference between right and wrong, but some individuals choose to do what is wrong, and hurt others. There needs to be some way to protect good people from evil people; this can only be done by force. Good people get together to establish rules for mutual protection, hence government.
We would have far fewer problems if the federal government remained constrained by the Constitution, i.e., only the powers enumerated. Over the past 90 years, the public, by their inattention to government or their greed for something for nothing, has allowed the situation to deteriorate to the point that the federal government is looked to first to provide the answer to any problem, instead of realizing that an overactive federal government IS the problem.
If something is important enoug for the federal government to do it, the Constitution should be amended to provide for it, rather than have it legistated by Congress, the President, or the Supreme Court.
The only way to change it is for each of us to get up from the couch and be more concerned about government than the Kardashians, and do something about it.

Very few people see the constitution for what it is. The supreme court
recently reaffirmed that the constitution was a contract between the
federal republic and the states,that the citizens are not party to. This
should nullify the 16th amendment (income tax), since their is no legal
basis for holding anyone bound to a contract that they are not party
to.

The constitution was a sham. It prevented none of this, and was not intended to. It was intended to destroy states’ rights through centralization. Not at all. The city does not want you to find a legal place to park, in the hopes you will be forced to try your luck parking in a ticketable spot. It’s all about the massive parking ticket scam, and the large percentage of those that miss paying the tickets on time, providing even more massive revenues through the brutality of the corrupt court system.
New York City cops briefly stopped issuing parking tickets in response to the mayor’s crude remarks about them, and the daily revenue loss to the city was in the MILLIONS!!!
I observed, working in NYC some years ago, that you could make a living selling parking spaces. Just buy an antique Mercury and cruise around lower Manhattan, find a parking space, and sell it for five bucks (people yell out their car windows if you so much as reach into your pocket while strolling down the sidewalk: “Are you moving your car?”). Do this all day long, the bucks would rack up, you could make a serious living. Beats driving cab. Of course, the downside is you have to live in New York City to do this for a living. Who could afford the overnight parking tickets? They make people re-park in their underwear at 7:00 AM on alternate Tuesdays and Thursdays and Saturdays, snow, rain, or shine (Mondays and Wednesdays depending on which street you parked on, but then it’s 6:00 AM or 8:00 AM, depending on which phase of the moon it is in…well, somewhere, just read the signs.) Greatest city on Planet Earth. Couldn’t wait to get out of it. Quit my job to get out of there. Found a parking space in San Diego. No signs.
