City of Boston Bans Smoking in Public Parks

The Boston Parks and Recreation Commission voted unanimously yesterday to adopt a proposed smoking ban for all City of Boston park properties. The ban was initially proposed by Mayor Thomas M. Menino and then approved on November 20 by members of the Boston City Council.

The amendment to City of Boston Municipal Code, Ordinance 7-4.14, prohibits the smoking of tobacco, marijuana, or any other material on properties controlled by the Boston Parks and Recreation Department.

The measure will be enforceable by the Boston Police Department and Boston Park Rangers and is punishable by a fine of $250 per violation.

According to a letter written by Mayor Menino, “This amendment is necessary to maintain the health and safety of our public parks and ensure that these valuable resources can be enjoyed by all Boston residents.”

The ordinance goes into effect immediately. Prior to enforcement, the Boston Parks and Recreation Department, Boston Police Department, and Boston Public Health Commission will work collaboratively to educate the public about the new rule.

As another draconian law is passed in the historic city of Boston, it is already clear activists will be challenging this matter through civil disobedience. Personally, I will be heading to Boston next week to engage in some horrific smoking on the "public" land.

What a bunch "Draconian" Hypocrites!" Mayor Menino's statement, “This amendment is necessary to maintain the health and safety of our public parks and ensure that these valuable resources can be enjoyed by all Boston residents” is a bunch of crock! If any government really cared about the health, welfare, safety and joy of it's citizens..why don't they--the city, state and federal administrators through out America Ban Chemtrails!!! Talking about health??? Hey...the poisoned polluted air that we breathe is worse than the tobacco smoke alone. No wonder they call us "Useless Eaters!" Ban Chemtrails and give us back our health and valuable Blue Skys!

Good one David!!

That's exactly where I was going with my comment and you beat me to the punch.

Just proves this has nothing to do with health and safety.

My opinion is, this is about conditioning, but the people of Boston have already shown when the criminal bullies say jump they ask how high.

David, I agree with you absolutely. They don't give a damn about our health as everything is out there to kill us, give us cancers, Alzheimer's, allergies and on and on.... They just don't want us to have sovereignty over our bodies nor do they want us to enjoy ourselves. In the past sitting with a bunch of friends drinking a brew and smoking a ciggy went along with having an intelligent conversation which usually included criticising the politicians and wars and so on. Maybe that's what they are really afraid of. Please go out there and smoke and smoke, what the heck Fukushima is out there God knows how many have already died and how many more will. Millions?
