Rise Of The Preppers: 50 Of The Best Prepper Websites And Blogs On The Internet

Michael Snyder, Contributor
Activist Post

Are you preparing for the collapse of society?  If so, the truth is that you are definitely not alone.  The number of preppers in the U.S. has absolutely exploded in recent years.  It has been estimated that there are now approximately 3 million preppers in the United States, and Doomsday Preppers is currently the highest rated show on the National Geographic channel.  In fact, you could be living next to a prepper and never even know it.

All over America, families are transforming spare rooms into long-term food storage pantries, planting survival gardens, unplugging from the grid, converting their homes over to alternative sources of energy, taking self-defense courses and stocking up on just about everything that you can imagine.

The re-election of Barack Obama and other recent events seem to have given the prepper movement even more momentum.  For example, in January the U.S. Mint broke all kinds of records and sold nearly half a billion dollars worth of gold and silver coins to the public.  Not only that, Americans bought enough guns during the last two months of 2012 alone to supply the entire armies of China and India.  When it comes to prepping, nobody can match the passion that Americans put into it.

So what are all of these people prepping for?

Well, the truth is that no two preppers have the exact same motivation.  There is a general consensus among preppers that our world is becoming increasingly unstable, but when you sit down and talk with them you find out that there are a whole host of different civilization-killing events that various preppers are concerned about.  Some are preparing for the collapse of the economy.  Others are extremely concerned about the potential for crippling natural disasters and catastrophic earth changes. To other preppers, the rise of the "Big Brother" surveillance grid that is being constructed all around us is the greatest danger, and many of them warn of the tyrannical agenda of the New World Order.

Terrorism, killer pandemics, EMP attacks, World War III, martial law, solar megastorms, asteroid strikes and societal chaos are some of the other things that many preppers are worried about.  There are even some preppers that are not worried about any "threats" at all - they just want to get "back to the land" and want to become less dependent on the system.

Whatever the motivation, it is undeniable that the prepper movement has gotten very large and that it continues to grow.

In fact, there was a recent article in the New York Times about preppers that was actually written by a prepper entitled "The Preppers Next Door"...
To the unprepared, the very word 'prepper' is likely to summon images of armed zealots hunkered down in bunkers awaiting the End of Days, but the reality, at least here in New York, is less dramatic. Local Preppers are doctors, doormen, charter school executives, subway conductors, advertising writers and happily married couples from the Bronx. They are no doubt people that you know — your acquaintances and neighbors. People, I’ll admit, like myself.
I was absolutely amazed that one of the key mouthpieces of the establishment, the New York Times, would publish an article that was mostly positive about preppers, because the truth is that prepping is essentially a huge expression of a lack of faith in the establishment.   Even the article admitted as much...
PREPPING IS THE BIG SHORT: a bet not just against a city, or a country or a government, but against the whole idea of sustainable civilization. For that reason, it chafes against one of polite society’s last remaining taboos — that the way we live is not simply plagued by certain problems, but is itself insolubly problematic.
And that is exactly right.  There are millions of us that are entirely convinced that the world around us is becoming increasingly unstable and that "the system" will not be there to take care of us when everything falls to pieces.

With each passing day, even more Americans lose faith in the system and begin prepping.  If you are one of those new preppers, there are actually dozens of great websites out there on the Internet where you can get an education about prepping for free.  The list of websites and blogs that I have compiled below contains more articles and resources than you could ever possibly need.  Hopefully many of you will find this list to be extremely helpful.

The sad truth is that our world is becoming increasingly unstable in a whole bunch of different ways and we all need to learn how to prepare for the difficult years ahead.

Unfortunately, most Americans simply are not prepared for much of anything.

For example, a large percentage of Americans do not even have enough savings to get them through a single financial emergency.  According to one recent report, approximately 44 percent of all households in the United States are just one unexpected event away from financial disaster.

Most American families do not have much food stored up either.  One recent survey discovered that 55 percent of all Americans have less than three days supply of food in their homes.

Could that possibly be accurate?  Do people really keep that little food in their homes?

Another survey asked Americans how long they think they could survive if the entire electrical grid went down and there was no more power for an extended period of time.  Incredibly, 21 percent of those who responded said that they would survive for less than a week, and an additional 28 percent of those who responded said that they would survive for less than two weeks.  Close to 75 percent of those who responded said that they would be dead before the two month mark.

So who are the crazy ones?

Are the people trying to become more independent and self-sufficient crazy, or are the people who have complete and total faith that the system will take care of them no matter what happens actually the crazy ones?

I don't know about you, but I would prefer for myself and my family to at least have a chance to survive if society melts down for some reason.

What about you?

Are you a prepper?

Do you know some preppers?

Do you believe that people should be prepping?

The more relevant question: how many blogs does Michael Snyder need to tell us the world is going to collapse?

Today's news - 25 reasons you are about to die!!!

Tomorrow's news - 26 reasons you are about to die!!!

Whoa I better stock up!!!

But I'm sure you're just a god-fearing man trying to get the word out. Right. Convenient marketing plan. Three blogs and counting with all those ads that just so happen to sell doomsday products. Typical business model. Same with the gold and silver hucksters.

All you snake oil salesman do realize that some of us reading this material got here because we critically think and aren't easily conned, correct?

Beware..the above post is from a government shill:)

Thanks for the links. The anti-prepper hysteria is proof that preppers are on to something. Even if preppers were wrong, they aren't hurting anybody, so one has to wonder why the media goes to such lengths to dismiss preppers.

Doth nature itself, tell us that we should store food for leaner times? I find the common squirrel a perfect model. I think it would be "un natural " to not store up provisions for a later time.

I must have some lib-tard squirrels at my place. They played and chased each other through the trees all summer and now that it's winter, they sit and wait by the feeders for me to throw them some corn. "Entitlement Squirrels"

although i believe, something bad is on the horizon. i believe that this is part of a problem reaction solution formula....the problem is we all pretty much know something big may occur, the reaction is all this fear generating capitol for all these organizations .the solution is for govt to come in and take it all under the nat'l def. prep act

It would be much easier to survive in the sun belt on an agricultural piece of ground where you can grow your own food year round and raise live stock.

It is going to be much harder to survive in the northern hemesphere where the climate is much colder. The cost of living is much higher in a place like Alaska where everything has to be shiped in, especially food, clothing, housing and energy.

In the sun belt you can be energy indepenent from the grid with solar, wind, hydro electric, and geo-thermal.

Investing in gold for the common man, it is out of reach. It is for someone that is a multi millionaire on up and can afford to tie up part of their money long term. Besides gold does not generate any cash flow. It just sits in a vault and stagnates. I personally would not tie-up money in gold. I would not invest in any venture unless it was an income producing entity that was generating a positive cash flow. For the average guy silver would be a much better investment. And than I would only put 10 to 20% of my money into it at the most. Silver is the poor man's gold, it is the tail on the kite of gold. And you can always trade your silver for whatever you need.

I think that gold is another bubble. When the interest rates go up in 2014, the market value of gold and bonds are going to drop like a lead baloon, and people that don't sell out at the top of the market are going to take it in the shorts. The interest rates can only stay down for so long and eventually they are going to have to go back up because of devaluatioin of the dollar and low income returns on bonds which do not keep up with inflation. It will be harder to sell and attract domestic and foreign investors to buy U.S. bonds that pay a low interest rate. Also when the interest rates go up, people holding bonds that pay a low interest rate will be dumping them for bonds that pay a higher return. No person in their right mind wants to hold on to bonds that are paying near zero interest rates with very little returns on investment.

I prognosticate that the next bubbles to burst is derivitives, bonds that pay low interest, and gold and silver. Gold will drop further because it has run up to all time highs. It is much higher than it has ever been in the past. The drop in the price of silver will not be as much as gold. All this speculation in precious metals is driven by fear and greed and inside traders and speculators in the NYMEX. Most of the investors that buy gold and silver on the commodity exchanges are buying on margin. They can buy for example a $10,000 30 day contract on gold or silver at 10% X $10,000 = $1,000 down. It is all on paper. There is no physical gold being traded. If all the investors demanded payment especially in gold at one time there would not be enough gold to pay off all the investors. It is a confidence game or Ponzi Pyramid Scam. The bottom line, it is all based on fraud. I personally would not invest in either gold or silver until the interest rate go up to 10%, than I would only invest in physical gold or silver.

If you wan't to survive, remember diversificatrion is the key!

I would invest in renewable resourses such as, seeds for planting fruits and vegetables. Also I would invest in durable goods such as, tools guns and ammuntion.

If there is a food shortage and a famin you can trade food for gold. You cannot eat gold.

I would not wan't to be in a drought stricten area. Without a source of good drinking water. You cannot live very long without water.

Great topic. Disasters happen. The response to Katrina and Sally is proof enough that the number one person to get my family through a tough situation is me. It is about being individually responsible. I'm not going to put my wife and kids at risk in a place like the Superdome. Their eyes will not be looking for the government to get them protection, food and water...they will look to dad (me)...as they should. This dad is ready. I am not going to go throgh an eathquake or other disaster and have my kids tell me they are hungry and watch them suffer or put my family at risk in a government food line somewhere surrounded by desperate people. I prep because I am responsible and because I care. If I never have to use my preps, fine! I have still taught my children responsibility. It's better to have it and not need it than not have it and need it desperately, as $100 worth of prep is worth $10,000 of regret.

The people who say preppers are crazy are the same ones who say people who don't buy insurance from some big company are crazy.

And guess who will be whining to 'share' when shtf time comes.

I'm not sure how you arrived at the best 50 prepper websites. The Canadian Prepper Network used to be good but it has become a place where discussion and free thinking is crushed. If you don't agree with the Mods and toe the line you will be censured and ultimately banned. Subjects they don't like are closed. Becomming very dictatorial.. more like the government than the government itself. Be wary of what you join. It can become something else in a heartbeat... or something it already was... and just took the wraps off of.

Being a prepper is like having a hobby that you get a whole lot out of its a lifestyle and one that for many of us is enjoyable. Great list of sites you have put together !

I have told people before that: "You know, the United States isn't going to be around forever. We are already the oldest living republic on the earth. All governments fail eventually and when republics fail they generally go directly to some form of dictatorship."

I then get looked at like what I just said makes absolutely no sense.

Presumably they were told in History class about all manner of civilizations that rose and then fell. The signs of decay are all around and absolutely no Republic can long survive the degree of apathy that natural born citizens of the United States seem to have toward voting and participation in their government.

Someone once told me that businesses get the union that they deserve. I'll go that one better. People get the government that they deserve.

Personally... I've been following PrepperZone.net on Twitter and I've been getting a lot more from that single feed than what I've seen from some of these sites.

Prior to the industrial revolution most of a man's efforts were exerted in providing basic needs. Food being at the top of the list. In a catastrophic social/economic collapsed, society will revert back to those times. Gold and Silver are nice, but you can't eat it to survive. Silver prices being as there are right now is a solid investment. Every prepper should have a hard financial reserve of some type. Barter items are even better in a doomsday scenario. Seeds will be the post-apocalyptic currency. I bought 10 of the Survival Seed Banks from myseedcellar.com and plan to get more. So far they have the best price I can find for what you get. I bought another 20 Silver Eagles to stash away for a rainy day to. Right now I think you can't go wrong with silver being how cheap it is... My 2 cents
