End Military Draft Registration to Cut Wasteful Spending, Say Congressmen

Activist Post

As Washington seeks to identify wasteful federal spending, two lawmakers have proposed getting rid of the Selective Service System that registers men ages 18-25 for the potentiality of reinstating the military draft.

Congressmen Peter DeFazio (D-Ore) and Rep. Mike Coffman (R-Colo) say that it makes no sense to maintain the Selective Service System when the "Pentagon has no interest in returning to conscription due to the success of the all-volunteer force."

They said that the government is wasting millions of dollars each year to maintain this database "preparing for the possibility of a military draft" that is highly unlikely.

According to the Associated Press:
The Selective Service has a budget of $24 million and a full-time staff of 130. It maintains a database of about 17 million potential male draftees. In the event of a draft, the agency would mobilize as many as 11,000 volunteers to serve on local draft boards that would decide if exemptions or deferments to military service were warranted.
The Selective Service is an "inexpensive insurance policy," said Lawrence Romo, the agency's director. "We are the true backup for the true emergency."
Men between the ages of 18 and 25 are required to register and can do so online or by mail. Those who fail to register with the Selective Service can be charged with a felony. The Justice Department hasn't prosecuted anyone for that offense since 1986.
There can be other consequences, though. Failing to register can mean the loss of financial aid for college, being refused employment with the federal government, and denied U.S. citizenship.
This proposal to end draft registrations comes just one week after Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY) proposed reinstating the draft to include all women.

"Now that women can serve in combat they should register for the Selective Service alongside their male counterparts," said Rangel in a statement. "Reinstating the draft and requiring women to register for the Selective Service would compel the American public to have a stake in the wars we fight as a nation.

Obviously, returning to conscription and expanding Selective Service to all women aged 18-25 would dramatically increase these costs.

"There is no one who wants this (draft registration) except 'chicken hawk' members of Congress," DeFazio told the Associated Press.

At least some Senators are making sense but once again it is money and not that the draft is detrimental to freedom and liberty.
In todays digital age it makes one wonder what and the hell do these people actually do and what have they done but fatten the pockeets of those who supply a redudant bureaucracy.
And oh yes fatten their own pockets and sit until retirement.
Another thing this Bureau is good for is as a stepping stone into one or another agency.
This coming from Oregons Senatorial ranks is surprising because Oregon is and has always been a war loving state and during Bush terms almost a rabid one at that.
Mandatory registration for just one purpose war making as the registration base is given to military recruiters so they can target individuals.
The power to forcibly indict one into military servitude is the power of Kings, Dictators, and Tyrants and those who financially gain by such tyranny.
At an age before adulthood should begin a man child gets a notice that he must register or part of his Rights as a citizen will be denied.
He will be denied to serve in a civilian capacity within the very government he is supporting and is voting for its officers.
It classifys him as being less worthy to his nation than those who are military and non military as well.
Some can ROLL ON FLOOR LAUGHING ASS OFF but the voluntary military has acvomplished just what the Military-Scientific-Educational-Financial-Industrial-Political-Elites wanted a police state built upon military conquest with a public completely out of any means to stop them.
They do not care how many die in combat or commit suocides for they are a minority of peoples in military and there is no lessening of volunteers to do the fighting and dying as now they can include people from any nation in those miltary forces.
Terrorism is a threat to deter ones sense of security and well being, what is a DRAFT or even the treat of consequeces for not signing into it but "An Act of Terrorism."

Ending military draft registration would also be a good way to end legalized sex discrimination against men...since this requirement is only imposed on men. While they're at it, let's see them end the Office of Women's Health, as well.

Yes, and who would follow such a butchering government anymore? I salute the men and women in the military, however, the way they are treated is appalling.
This warmongering government gets none of my children to murder- I will see to that.
