Does 100% Natural Mean GMO-Free? Natural Regulators Side with Monsanto

When you purchase shampoo or cosmetics and it has a sticker on it that claims it is “natural”, what’s your impression? You think the ingredients are all-natural, right? Naturally, you are not alone.

However, the agency who is in charge of certifying personal care items as “natural” seems to think GMO ingredients fit under this umbrella. No matter what product it is, 100% natural does NOT also mean GMO-free.

The Question of 100% Natural

The Natural Products Association (NPA) claims its role in regards to personal care items is to help consumers choose those products that contain only safe and natural ingredients. They say their job is “to protect and equip consumers to maximize their well being.” As a result, they developed a set of guidelines and a certification process for personal care creators. The “essence” of their labeling process is that the product must contain only 100% natural ingredients, be safe and free of ingredients with any suspected human health risk, be free from animal testing, and be packaged in environmentally friendly materials.

But not only do they ignore the negative effects of GMOs, they do not even mention genetically modified ingredients on their “positive list” of ingredients. They act as if they don’t exist. In other words—they allow GMO ingredients to receive the “natural” certification.

The Organic Consumers Association (OCA) is leading a charge to have this changed. Ronnie Cummins, the Executive Director of the agency says the NPA is deceiving consumers “by leading them to believe that the products they buy, stamped with the NPA Natural Seal, are truly natural. There is nothing natural about GMOs.”

Incidentally, the NPA recently came out in opposition to Prop 37, the proposed legislation in California that would require GMO labeling. So, perhaps their goal isn't to “protect and equip” consumers as they allege. Perhaps, like so many other corporations, their goal is to increase profits, maximize the bottom line, and pull the wool over our eyes.

Admittedly, products claiming to be 100% natural do have a higher chance of being better than products not carrying the label, but it’s important to know what the label really means. The definition of a ‘natural’ product has no defined parameters in law or regulation, so essentially these products can be — and many times are — as contaminated as what the consumer may have originally tried to avoid. Under federal regulations, it’s entirely acceptable to include additives that are not even deemed as ‘natural’, or use unnatural preparation methods like genetic modification or pasteurization. The product only has to be part ‘natural’.

What can you Do?

The OCA has begun a petition campaign and you can contribute. Soon after receiving thousands of emails, the NPA began blocking them. But the campaign is now being waged on social media sites. You can find the drafted email here on the OCA website and also find links to the NPA’s Facebook and LinkedIn pages.

It takes about two minutes to do your part. Tell the NPA to wise up about GMOs and stand by their promise to “protect” consumers. And of course, we recommend buying 100% organic as much as possible, and purchasing items that contain the NON-GMO Project seal.

The legal system doesn't reflect the understanding of the general public - how can it protect the general public when it's definitions of things is completely different? We want natural products, they say what we consider natural is not what they define as natural. They have twisted definition to suit themselves. Their definition is by the general public's definition UNNATURAL! But you need lawyers to fight this... lawyers who speak legalese. The same problem for other things. It would be far better when asked by a judge "Do you understand the charges?" or "Do you understand what you've done wrong?" or anything which assumes you understand the law's position) to say "NO" because what we understand and what the law defines are two completely different things. It is sad that the law has been so corrupted and so removed from general everyday life that the average person would become prey to it without a lawyer, even when they are innocent!

GROWING MONSTERS ONLY
I recall at Obamas start, he said he'd get labels on organic foods and that he wouldn't be going after medical marijuana.

since then he has appointed the vice pres of monsanto to food safety czar and ignored millions of signatures for labeling GMOs via the fda, and has raised the byrne grants from $100+ million to $2.5+ billion, and now all of the medical marijuana providers have been arrested by the feds(without any proof of wrongdoing in 98% of the arrests) now we are seeing more people "suspected" of marijuana being flat out killed by police!!!!

I'll show up at the poll and vote yes on 37 and write in Ron Paul and that is all. Maybe, if I have been drinking, I might accidentally stumble into one of those voting machines and fly off into a drunken rage or something.

What is disturbing is understanding that Monsanto planned to spread their GMO seeds to innocent farmers land. Then after the seeds are released naturally (which is the only natural part of GMO) Monsanto's legal team then tells the farmer now that the corn is on his property they now have the right to trespass, gather samples then when completed come back to tell you if you have their GMO plants on your property. Which then makes it theirs..they had hoped.
So, understanding that corn (just one) is GMO at about 90% so when it is eaten we/you now have GMO information in your system. I believe Monsanto plans to take ownership of each human with GMO information. Is this really too far fetch? Do they now remind you of some really evil dark force? They have a dark plan for all of us...if we don't fight back.

I'm sorry to inform you but if I buy almond/avocado/coconut oil made with GM almonds/avocados/coconuts, it is in fact still 100% Natural in the sense that the word natural has always been utilized when purchasing products. Almonds/avocados/coconuts are found in nature. And given a few decades GM almonds/avocados/coconuts will probably wipe out the God-given, non man-made, "natural" versions!

I think we're all beginning to understand why the pilgrims fled this exact same psychotic tyranny to start a new country. It wasnt about religion. This time theres nowhere to run. Its time to fight!

Mr.....zombie.

Please awaken from your slumber and understand that the Pauls, Rand and Ronnie, are in bed with Monsanto and other evil GMO peddling swine.

Rand voted clearly to support the Obama controlled Senate as they denied California the right to label GMO food, and Ron supported his boy. This abuse of states rights and abuse of people was disgusting. Your Pauls are fakes. Sounds like you have figured out a lot of things.....keep going, the Pauls are fake hope.

It is stupid to think all natural is GMO free. These food pigs are NOT going to let go of their investment in GMO tech. I started a long time ago reading labels you should too. This fight is going to get worse before it gets better. In the meantime your body takes the brunt of the fight. Nothing is safe anymore.

Your a fool to think thay when you alter the genetic makeup of a fruit or vegetable you still consider it natural. Once the genes are incorporated with pesticides and herbicides it becomes synthetic.your a perfect example of the stupidity that is out there.

First of all, even the name sounds suspect, "Natural Products Association". This is a pretty clear case of Orwellian "doublethink". They were probably created by Monsanto with the primary purpose of defining GMO food as 'natural', which easily explains why an organization that claims to promote natural would fight against the labeling of GMOs.

War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength, and GMO is Natural.

Horse manure is 100% natural, so too are many things that you might not consider fit to put in your mouth or on your body.

USDA plays both sides of the table, pushing GMO and selling their nearly worthless Organic Certification, to help ensure us that all is well.

What Is Organic, Really?
According to USDA Organic Label Certifications:

"100 percent organic," means that products must contain only organically produced ingredients and "approved processing aids."

"Organic," products must consist of at least 95 percent organically produced ingredients. The remaining ingredients must consist of USDA approved nonagricultural (non-organic) substances.

"Made with organic ingredients," processed food products must contain at least 70 percent organic ingredients.

The perception that there is nothing better than USDA Organic Certification is just a perception, the reality is that in the growing and processing of USDA Organic foods, about 275 "approved non agricultural (synthetic chemicals) are allowed. That also includes anything for which there isn't an organic equivalent.

So, stretching the imagination, horse manure or Mercury could be included in food and the food could still be certified as Organic, since there isn't commercially available organic horse manure or mercury. That is how Soy lecithin slithered it's way into so many organic foods, a substance considered to be a dangerous industrial toxin.

There are many different organic certifications and if eating pure wholesome, natural, unadulterated foods is important to you, it will take buying from farmers & manufacturers that you know and trust or a learning curve to wade your way through the various certifications to see what's allowed that you might not want to eat.

Sadly, not all manufacturers stay pure, we've discovered that they change ingredients from time and that's when you vote with your dollars and let the manufacturer know of your decision.

Engineered Poisons are found in common everyday foods such as:

infant formula, salad dressing, bread, cereal, hamburgers and hotdogs, margarine, mayonnaise, cereals, crackers, cookies, chocolate, candy, fried food, chips, veggie burgers, meat substitutes, ice cream, frozen yogurt, tofu, tamari, soy sauce, soy cheese, tomato sauce, protein powder, baking powder, alcohol, vanilla, powdered sugar, peanut butter, enriched flour and pasta and hundreds of things that you would never suspect.

Have you tried buying Mayonnaise lately? Soy oil? You bet it's GMO!

There is no such thing as GMO certification. It's never been permitted in the United States.

Those that "claim" a product is GMO-free are basically guessing.

Natural on the other hand, is a different designation, also not regulated or certified.

Only Organic is certified, if used in it's proper context.

We get this question all the time (I'm a major food reseller), there is a great deal of misunderstanding about these terms.

By the way -- petitions don't work. Not sure why you'd promote them since they are really a waste of time.

I have emailed one bakery who claimed all Natural to see if they had GMO ingredients in their product. To their credit they said they did and then they gave me the reason. The said there were no suppliers of non GMO grains so they were forced to buy GMO. I decided to call their bluff and sent another email asking if they could buy organic grains for the same price they paid for the GMO would they be willing to switch. I got an email back from someone in charge who said that my email was to juicy to ignore.
So there is at least one bakery who would love to remove all GMO's from their products if they could.
