European Commission Recommends Banning Mercury Fillings

Elizabeth Renter
Activist Post

Just a few decades ago, it was completely common to go to the dentist with a cavity or two and leave with several silver-colored fillings. And while these fillings were frequently referred to as “silver,” dental professionals were referring to the color, and certainly not the contents. Those fillings are mercury, and they are highly toxic. Now, about half of American dentists are mercury-free and the general population is starting to take note on the dangers of the dental amalgam mercury fillings in their mouths.

Mercury Fillings to be Banned Due to Health Hazards

The European Commission has paved the way, in recent weeks, for phasing out dental mercury, but it seems the United States is not ready.

According to the Commission:
Mercury and most of its compounds are highly toxic to humans, animals and ecosystems. High doses can be fatal to humans, but even relatively low doses can seriously affect the nervous system and have been linked with possible harmful effects on the cardiovascular, immune and reproductive systems.

Despite these devastating effects, even the E.U. stops short of mentioning the specific dangers of mercury fillings, instead focusing on the dangers of mercury in general.

But, if mercury can cause these problems when ingested, couldn’t it also cause problems as it sits in your mouth, potentially giving off vapors when damaged and leeching into your foods and saliva?

The procedures taken by trained dentists when removing these fillings is sufficient evidence of the dangers of mercury amalgam fillings. They must provide an alternate airflow for the patient, so they do not breath the contaminated air from the mouth. A dam must be used to limit swallowing and inhalation. Protective gear must be worn on the body and face, and air purifiers are used. These precautions indicate a serious risk is present.

But the United States has been ‘shockingly slow‘ to do anything to reduce the use of these mercury fillings, particularly when compared with countries in Europe. Sweden has phased out dental amalgam completely and this latest move by the E.U. indicates it will soon be eliminated on the continent.

About 77 percent of Americans who are told their amalgam filling is mostly mercury would opt for an alternative, and would be willing to pay more for it. Resin composite fillings are more expensive, but are safe and well worth the cost. When the external costs of mercury fillings are considered (including damage to the environment and health care costs), the alternative fillings aren’t much more expensive at all. Another way to reduce costs and dentist visits? One simple solution to avoiding these fillings altogether is to learn how to prevent cavities.

There is really nothing new about the dangers of mercury, or its high presence in today’s society. It’s a highly toxic substance and science has recognized this for some time. However, many maintain dental amalgam is safe, despite research to the contrary. The good news is that the European Commission’s action may pave the way for a similar closer look by American officials– though we aren’t entirely hopeful, considering the EU’s commitment to GMO labeling has not rubbed off on the U.S. at all.

A had a stroke; I believe it's mercury fillings. I was hypotensive, dehydrated, lethargic, weak and grievous palpitations. It's 1999. I couldn't speak.

I didn't have a stroke; I believe it's the mercury fillings. DUH! Where is there any evidence at all that this amalgam has caused a single health problem? But then when did we ever need any evidence to ban something...

S.W.P. CA.
So decades ago they tell us Mercury was bad for us.That high levels were found if fish and that the public should only consume so much in a given time span. Then you had all the stories from Japan and what Mercury had done there with their higher seafood intake and what it did to newborns. And now, along with Fluoride, which is being proven more and more to be Toxic to the body even at low levels, you have a Government that says it's ok to have the fillings, drink Fluoride and that it's good for you.If I dump Mercury or Fluoride into a Stream,River or the Ocean it is considered Toxic waste and Hazmat needs to be called out to clean it up.Yet here we have our Public Health officials telling us not to worry that the levels are under recommended intake levels. This is one time you need to tell yourselves (buyer beware)!!!

What should be banned is not these amalgam fillings, but writers who don’t have the slightest idea what they’re talking about. Ms. Renter says, “And while these fillings were frequently referred to as “silver,” dental professionals were referring to the color, and certainly not the contents.” Certainly(!) not the contents? Really? And with what do you think these amalgam fillings are amalgamated to give them the silver color, Ms. Renter, other than mercury?

SILVER!

Yes, the mercury is amalgamated at high speed with powdered silver. Then the vast majority of the liquid mercury is squeezed out under high pressure, leaving mostly silver and a small residue of mercury, whereupon the silver/mercury filling is placed in the tooth. Amalgamation: That’s why they’re called amalgams.

You further say, “However, many maintain dental amalgam is safe, despite research to the contrary.” What controlled studies have been made of the poisonous nature of amalgam fillings rather than of mercury alone? Sure, ingested mercury, can be harmful in large amounts. But the amount of mercury in fillings is miniscule. And mercury was used in large amounts to cure syphilis for many years before the advent of antibiotics, so much mercury that a person’s skin often turned blue, but I do not recall reading of an epidemic of deaths as a result.

How do I know about fillings? I am a retired dentist who dealt with silver amalgam fillings almost daily most of my life. I am a healthy 78 year old man with no symptoms of mercury poisoning, heart disease, atherosclerosis, stroke, cancer, hypotension, dehydration, lethargy or weak and grievous palpitations, Ms. Roller (comment #1), despite my daily encounter with mercury in my profession, and with silver amalgam fillings in my teeth for many decades. My 81 year old brother was also a dentist and has no symptoms of mercury poisoning. My father, a dentist for decades, died at 86 with no symptoms of mercury poisoning. I know many dentists, none of whom have mercury poisoning. How would you explain how dentists in daily contact with pure mercury have no symptoms of mercury poisoning, Ms. Renter?

And, Ms. Roller (comment #1), all of those symptoms you describe could very easily be ascribed to an unhealthy lifestyle or genetics, rather than mercury in your fillings. Look to yourself, Ms. Roller, rather than blaming, with no evidence, an outside source for your problems. A good course in logic would be helpful, as well.

Spreading disinformation can be as harmful as ignoring truth.

Mercury is a liquid at room temperature, it will solidify if you make cold enough, -40 C and be gas if you make it hot enough, +357 C (+674.6 Fahrenheit). It expands and contracts easily in this liquid form, which is why old thermometers used it. It cannot vaporize at 98 degrees Fahrenheit (body temperature) or any temperature near that. The video you referred to is an absolute fraud!

To Anonymous 3:37,

Anyone who believes that after many years the tiny amount of mercury in a filling can be pouring out vapor like it was Mount Vesuvius erupting ash in 79 A.D. needs a good course in chemistry. Mercury cannot vaporize at body temperature. And even if it could, the small amount in a filling, vaporizing at the rate shown in that fraudulent video, would consume all the mercury available in days, if not hours. But it can’t. That’s science for you.

Over the last 200 years, billions of teeth have been durably restored with silver amalgam. One would think that if the use of the material were significantly harmful, it would be obviious to all.

Additionally, it has recently been reported that bis-phenol A has been shown to leech out of composite fillings (resin based tooth colored alternative direct filling material.

Pick your poison.

dr mengle,s work is alive and well being carried out by doctors, dentists etc,99% of all combat, stress, ptsd, gulfwar syndrom, bipolar etc you will find the victims have a mouth full of metal,

Lest any of you believe the garbage that is posted in the comments section here about the mercury not being able to off-gas at room temperature...

Here's another video of a dentist recreating the experiment on camera for you.

Well I can tell you this, a friend of mine who had all of her amalgams replaced saw an extreme improvement in her HEALTH. Dispute it if you want, the fact is they never should have put that in anything that goes into the human body. Get a grip! It's metal for cryin out loud! Do you think that metal belongs in the human body? Now go get your flu shot.

Anyone who thinks mercury is safe is a delusionsl brainwashed moron (and likely a shitty dentist, too).

I'm getting mine out, finally, due to life threatening health problems from mercury poisoning.

Medicine, dentistry and the pharmaceutical companies know that mercury fillings make people sick this is why they have fought so hard to keep this poison in our mouths. Both medicine and the pharmaceutical companies finanacially benefit from having unnecessarily sick people in our society, they dont want us well as it will effect there earnings

Another point i would like to make about amalgam fillings is that dentistry looked at these fillings under an electron microscope and came to the conclusion that mixing the metals together in certain quantities resulted in the fillings beading over into a convex shape from this they drew the conclusion that the mercury was locked into the filling. This is not science it is guesswork. No the mercury was not locked into the fillings it never was and it never will be and the smoking tooth video prooves this. I have nothing to gain from putting shit on amalgam fillings other than i want them banned so more people dont suffer as a result of such a stupid concept. DO NOT TRUST ANY DOCTORS DENTISTS OR SO CALLED EXPERTS IN SCIENCE FROM ONE HUMAN TO ALL OTHERS ON THIS PLANET DO NOT GET THIS SHIT!!!!!! IN YOUR MOUTH PERIOD.while your regretting it these FUCKTARDS will still be arguing

Leeds University has developed a new peptide called p11-4 that can heal teeth. The days of drilling and filling into to teeth to place poisonous toxins in peoples mouths are over.Dentistry should now be restricted to cleaning teeth healing teeth with this peptide or extracting teeth nothing more. If this doesnt happen and dentistry keeps using amalgam it will confirm suspicions that medicine and pharmaceutical companies want us sick!!!!
