High-fructose corn syrup, an extremely cheap, processed, and easily produced alternative to sugar, has been deemed ‘safe’ by the Food and Drug Administration since 1976. For decades, corn has been converted into high-fructose corn syrup for companies to use in their products at an extremely low cost, but it wasn’t so long ago that the dangers of this sugar alternative and food preservative have been recognized. Below you can view an infographic outlining the many dangers of high-fructose corn syrup, and how the production of corn syrup in general has made America FAT.

Presence of Corn and How There is So Much of It

Not many individuals would be surprised to hear that corn is the most widely planted cereal crop, with nearly 163 million hectares of land area being used for cultivation. Think the state of New York doubled in size for dedication to corn. And what do these corn fields output? 316 million metric tons were produced between 2011 and 2012 – nearly 6x that of wheat and 20x that of cotton.

Frighteningly, much of this corn isn’t even made to eat, as it actually isn’t edible.

The commodity is often produced with government backing for one primary reason – to be processed. The corn is simply a raw material meant to be transformed into the harmful ingredients we’ve come to consume so often today. It requires 3.2 pounds of corn to create 1 pound of high-fructose corns syrup. So it isn’t surprising that 25 million metric tons, about 8.2%, of corn was turned into HFCS between 2011-12, yielding 8 million metric tons of HFCS.

How is corn being produced at such alarming rates? Farmers aren’t alone when it comes to producing crops like corn, wheat, and soybeans – the government plays a large role. Between 1995 and 2010, the government put out $77.1 billion in subsidies for corn to be planted and grown. With corn being only 1 of the top 9 foods the government is paying for you to eat, 20 different subsidies are offered to farmers who grow corn, including:
  • Direct Payments and Production Contracts
  • Crop Insurance Premium Subsidies
  • Price Support Payments (loan deficiency, marketing loan gains, and certificates)
  • Counter-Cyclical Programs
  • More on Corn in the Form of High-Fructose Corn Syrup
As mentioned, 8.2% of corn was transformed into high-fructose corn syrup between 2011-2012, yielding 8 million metric tons of HFCS. While the food preservative is great for companies and manufacturers, consumers are suffering from the widespread consumption of the sugar alternative, Often containing mercury, HFCS has been shown to cause liver and kidney damage, decrease insulin resistance, increase blood pressure, decrease amount of blood and oxygen transferred to muscles, sabotage learning abilities, and make people fat.

And the prevalence of high-fructose corn syrup in food seems tied to its production rate. In fact, the ingredient is so prevalent that the average American eats approximately 35 pounds of HFCS annually. While the American Heart Association recommends a maximum of 6 teaspoons of table sugar a day for a woman and 9 teaspoons for a man, the average American consumes 22 teaspoons of sugar a day – 10.4 teaspoons being comprised of HFCS. To put it in other words, 47 grams of HFCS are taken in each day on average. HFCS is commonly in:
  • Processed Foods, ketchup, candy, cereal
  • Canned fruits and vegetables
  • Breads
  • Soft Drinks
  • Juices
  • Beers
  • Sweet-coating on pharmaceuticals
  • Preserved Meats
Lastly, corn is almost always genetically modified, causing concern for both human health and negative impact on the environment. More than 85% of American corn crops were genetically modified in 2009, but that number has likely increased since that time. How exactly is the genetic modification of corn causing harm?

GMO foods have been shown to cause harm to animal and human health in numerous ways, with Monsanto’s Bt corn causing weight gain and organic disruption, as a single example.

GM corn requires more pesticides and herbicide use, especially that of Monsanto’s best selling herbicide Roundup. Pesticides and herbicides create resistant crops (calling for even more use,) have been tied to birth defects, and could be making you fat, among other things.

Insecticides modified in GM corn also pollute U.S. waters.

Corn requires more nitrogen fertilizer than any other crop, which creates dead zones – areas in water where virtually nothing can live due to lack of oxygen.

HFCS isn't "an alternative" to sugar it is sugar. It is exactly what you would have if you took common table sugar and added enogh water to make a syrup and used heat to allow all the sugar to disolve. HFCS is sugar! DUH!

Table sugar is a large molecule made up of one molecule of glucose and one molecule of fructose. HFCS is glucose and fructose molecules in solution with a small amount of water. HFCS has slightly more fructose then glucose other then that it is the same as table sugar. It is left in the liquid/syrup form rather then cooking off all the water because it is easier to transport in large quantities and easier to use by food producers. It also has some properties, being a syrup, that lend itself to candy making. It's just sugar. Not poison, not corn, not pure fructose, not toxic, it's just sugar!!!

Good article.

Comments 1 and 4 are clearly shills from the HFCS industry. Dicks.
Cancer cells grow more quickly in HFCS.....here ya go shills.

BEST INFO -- search youtube for DR. LUSTIG SUGAR and WTFU. He describes how sugars are metabolized. Did u know HFCS was brought in under Nixon ?? It was done, apparently, because sugar's volatile price (directly affecting price of food) was a campaign issue. EastGhostCom

Maybe you meant: "increase" insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is the bad thing, where tissues do not respond as well as they should to take up glucose from the blood-stream.

HFCS was brought in under Harry Truman!!

Everything makes cancer cells grow. The only other option is to stop eating. 100% of the carbohydrates you eat are turned into sugar. Your body turns all carbs including HFCS into glucose. If you don't eat enough carbs your body can turn protein and fats into sugar. Sugar is what powers your muscles and your brain. Without sugar you die. Your body does not distinguis between HFCS, table sugar, carbohydrates or organic food. It is all turned into glucose. Your HFCS derangement syndrome is affecting your mind, get help.

Everthing DOESN'T make cancer cells grow...! Get a Grip...dipster!

Well if "Everthing DOESN'T make cancer cells grow" then sugar doesn't make cancer cells grow. Your body runs on sugar and if you don't eat sugar or carbohydrates then it will convert protein or fat to sugar. Get a Grip...dipster!

Re cancer debate. The Journal of Cancer Research does not 'recognise' the fact that we already know the cause of all cancers.

No alternative cancer cure is allowed to be published in any of the now exposed-as-corrupt med journals*, and that makes it illegal for your doc to even mention it, let alone cure you with any such protocol. Nor is it discussed by the Medical Industry.

The cures?

In the mid-1980s a famous US physician, Dr. Robert Good, became interested in an alternative cancer therapy that in clinical trials was shown to work well. At that point, Dr. Good was one of the most published authors in scientific literature, with over 2,000 articles to his name. He was the father of modern immunology and performed the first bone marrow transplant. He had been nominated for the Nobel Prize three times. By every measure, Dr. Robert Good was as mainstream as mainstream could be imagined up to his epiphany about cancer treatment.

When Dr. Good wrote about this alternative cancer treatment, he was refused publication in all medical journals because the findings were "too controversial," and flew in the face of conventional medical doctrine. He had strayed too far outside the bounds of what was "acceptable," and that was simply out of the question for the rest of the mainstream, even coming from someone with credentials as outstanding as Dr. Good's.

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2011/04/23/dr-nicholas-gonzalez-on-alternative-cancer-treatments.aspx

We have The Cure and Prevention of All Cancers, 2007, H R Clark PhD ND, privately published, exactly for this reason.

Dr Clark, an ex-Canadian Govt. cell research biologist carried out over half a million repeatable, so scientifically VALID bio-resonance comparison tests to identify the specific bacteria, viruses, parasites, heavy metals, dyes, moulds, radio-active substances, and benzene, asbestos, food allergens etc that are the cause of all cancers.

Other cures address most of these factors, and by doing so, they interrupt the cancer pathways. That stops the malignancy, sometimes within 24 hours. (Clark H R, PhD ND, 1995). The then boosted immune systems digest the tumor. Some of the cures are those of Drs Raymond Rife, and Robert Beck; (electrical); Dr Burzynski (gene targetting with drugs); , Germany`s ozone cure, that fcured Pres Reagan's lung cancer; and the herbal route of essiac,, that cured Sen Ted Kennedy's son's terminal bone cancer; Dr. Marijah McCain, H Hoxey and Jason Winters.

Wouldn't that be great! All cancers cured by some mysterious "alternative" cure that only one man knows about. What a great story! Nothing could stop this from being widely known and widely accepted... Well except if it weren't true... But of course it's true, some truely wise man discovered it all and isn't releasing the secrets but he is supported by... wait for it... Dr Mercola! TA DAH! Dr Mercola the source of all mysterious "alternative" cures and keeper of secrets knows how to cure all cancers and for only $19.99 plus shipping and handling, he will tell you what that secret is. Would Dr Mercola lie!!!??? Bwahaha !

HFCS damages your liver and kidneys. I get severe kidney stones if I ingest it. It IS NOT just sugar! That's a lie.

Good article! Spot the industry shills teehee... And in reply to the comment mentioning Hulda Clark - she has been repeatedly shown to be a scammer - however Bob Beck WAS the real thing :)

HFCS cannot damage your liver! DUH! Everything you eat is digested in your intestines down to basic molecules and passes though the intestinal walls. Every carbohydrate you eat is converted by your intestinal tract into sugar and absorbed through your intestines into your blood. At this point your body does not know and can not know if the sugar came from a soft drink with HFCS or from a potato or a apple. It is just sugar, nothing more, nothing less.

Bob Beck!!! The "pusher" of the bio tuner, magnetic pulser, and colloidal silver. That Bob Beck???

To the HFCS Troll trying to defend HFCS is good stuff, You are blinded by pure evil. Please search your heart for forgiveness, as karma will catch up with you soon with great consequences. Just be ready.

Anonymous said...

Pure evil! Is that your big informed and scienced based response??? bwahahaha!

If you took pure table sugar and put it in a pot on your stove with a little tap water and brought it to a boil the sugar would combine with the water at a molecular level and become syrup. It would be the same syrup as HFCS. Scary stuff...

HFCS is NOT the same as table sugar...neither is it metabolized like table sugar...do your own research before having the condescending attitude ass. Great You tube video (about 90 min) from two Berkley MD's that explain in detail the pathway differences to metabolism of HFCS, alcohol and glucose...

Anonymous said...

That's the whole point!! HFCS is simply fructose and glucose just like table sugar. It is left in a syrup with about 40% water for easy transport and ease of combineing in commercial food manufacturing facilities. It is just table sugar. all of the hype and false claims like the ones from the two Berkley MD's are pure BS. I have researched but appearently you have not. 100% of the carbs you eat are converted to glucose by your body. It doesn't know if the sugar comes from beets, cane, corn or honey. The fructose from HFCS is converted to glucose exactly the same way the fructose from an apple is converted to glucose. There is zero difference to your body. I could explain the chemistry of sugar and what happens to it when it is combined with water to make a syrup but I doubt you would understand it.

If I was to buy that table sugar and corn syrup are chemically identical then why is corn syrup needed to make caramels to prevent the sugar molecules from crystallizing in a grainy fashion? Why does cheater fudge always set smooth? cheater fudge is fudge made with a corn syrup ingredient like marshmallow or karo that takes little time or skill to coax into a prefect "set". old fashion fudge is made with table sugar and a heck of a lot of luck involving the weather, humidity tempurature and skill of the cook to get it to set smooth instead of grainy. If they are the same why does that happen? no other sugar will work to get those results- not honey not molasses (but molasses was used for the first caramels and it does reduce the chances the caramel will seize) simpy syrup doesn't work either- in fact if you try adding simple syrup to fudge at the same stage you would add corn syrup it will instantly seize. again if they are the same- why is that?
