The Amazing and Healthy USDA Food Stamp Diet

Karen De Coster, Contributor

This is one of those things that make you think: real or satire? I’ve checked around, and everything I come up with seems to point to the fact that this ad really is a product of the federal government. If anyone finds anything different, let me know. This isn’t just a promotion of the welfare state; in fact, it is much more. It is an endorsement of the federal government’s grain-laden food pyramid, as well as the corporate state, corn-and-sugar, processed-food empire. Because no one on food stamps buys quality food. In fact, the food those folks tend toward buying is the cheapest, most processed, sugar-laden, economy food available on the market. But, according to this commercial, the welfare-and-food stamp set all look spectacular! Thanks to Travis Holte for the link.

When folks talk about the federalista food pyramid as vs. what they should really be eating, I always tell them, with the exception of the water and “sweets,” to print a large food pyramid and hang it upside down, and use this as a starter guide along the path to healthy and unpoliticized eating.

Karen De Coster: Who made you God??? I was so mad at you for your assumptions, ignorance, and arrogance, that I didn't bother to watch the movie. I am an elderly person who has worked at mostly minimum wage to support myself (and do the dirty work for people like you) all my life. I get food stamps now, along with very little social security. I get no medical support, take no allopathic medications, and eat healthy food for the most part, mostly organic vegetables and the ocassional organic chicken I get at the health food co-op. And Yes, I run out of food stamps way before the month is up. Has it occured to you that many people on food stamps don't eat healthy food because on food stamps they would eat only 2 or 3 weeks out of a month? I hate to blow it for you (haha), but there are many many people like me on food stamps who are lucky enough to have enough extra to just cover getting healthy food. I do hope one day soon you get to be one of 'those folks': unless you stay as blind as you are now, it will improve the content and reality of your writing.

Oh please Anon. Needing food stamps is one thing, government promotion of food stamps to flatter your figure is another. It's pathetic that food stamps are distributed to those who don't need them to create dependency and rustle up votes.
