The Link Between Processed Meat and Cancer

Mike Barrett
Activist Post

A recent study conducted by Swedish researchers has shown a further link between processed meats such as sausage or bacon and an increased risk of pancreatic cancer. This kind of connection is not necessarily new, but the study provides further evidence that indulging in processed meats may not be the greatest decision for your health.

Processed Meats Increases Pancreatic Cancer Risk

The study, published in the British Journal of Cancer, analyzed data from 11 clinical trials which involved 6,643 individuals struck with pancreatic cancer. What they found was that eating processed meats such as bacon, sausage, salami, pepperoni and hotdogs increases your risk of developing pancreatic cancer by 19 percent for every 50g of processed meat consumed. What may sound startling is that you only need to consume one sausage to meet the 50g.

Processed meats are those preserved by smoking, curing or salting, or using chemical additives. What makes the meats so problematic is the nitrates which are added for preservation such as coloring and flavoring. The nitrates are converted into nitrosamines, which have been linked to a number of cancers.

Although the research calls for the reduced consumption of processed meat, this is only one more reason to avoid processed meats altogether. Many processed meats increase your risk of diabetes, negatively impact lung function, and increase your risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Processed meats have also been shown to increase your risk of:
  • Colon cancer by 50 percent
  • Bladder cancer by 59 percent
  • Stomach cancer by 38 percent
  • Pancreatic cancer by 67 percent
Of course processed meats aren’t the only thing to look out for. Foods which have undergone processing measures will seldom be found in a healthy selection of foods. What may interest you is the fact that fatty processed foods have been shown to trigger addiction and lead to brain damage, which is one explanation as to why people want so much of them. In fact, growing evidence finds processed foods and sugary drinks are as addictive as cocaine.

The solution? Simply limit your consumption of processed meats and processed foods in general. It may seem difficult, as these foods have probably been around your entire life.  However, making this necessary change will not only dramatically improve your health, but also prove that you have the power and self-control to make what may seem like a drastic change to your diet.

Raw food is best and any processed food is less than ideal, but pork in any form is not fit for human consumption. The same can be said for any scavenging animal.

When I saw this http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-16526695 article the other day on BBC, I wanted to express something similar to this article. Almost as if hiding something, the subject of nitrates were conveniently avoided, reducing concerns to caloric measures and other such nonsense. What we should accept as fact, is that any regular consumption of nitrates is a contract with cancer, and should be avoided.

Processing in itself is usually not a positive thing, but it does not usually cause cancer. Maybe meat processing agents such as Activa (transglutaminase) should be further researched, but we'll likely find in the end that the culprit for cancer is in the nitrates primarily, with other obvious toxins as secondary.

Another question which many seem to miss, is why we want to eat processed meat in the first place. When considering the ethics of it, it is definitely something to question.

I would eat organic, ethically produced, highly processed meat as a staple, before I'd ever want to make conventional fillet mignon even a weekly occasion. I guess they've got us by our bal...bank accounts.

Let us just be sure to prosecute those pussbags in the FDA for criminal/homicidal negligence when the proof comes out, and we review the fact that they not only knew all along, but hid and supported it.

Correction:
meant to say '"conventionally" processed meat' - in the third paragraph. By "ethics" I imply treatment of animals, and wretched handling practices, as well as covert/undisclosed ingredients.

It might be worth noting that our hostile rulers seem to be really worried about people who are taking steps to 'survive' whatever coming collapse and manufactured calamity these evil rats are cooking up behind closed doors. You see, these elites are the ultimate control freaks.

Survivalists tend to stockpile many food items, but processed meats (spam, etc.) which have a long shelf life - seem to be on many survivalist's lists. Are they trying to scare us into not stocking up on these items, perhaps?

That nitrates in food form carcinogenic nitrosamines is not very new news. What the article doesn't mention is that you can chemically prevent nitrosamines from forming in the gut simply by consuming Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) along with the meal. Some manufacturers are already adding some ascorbic acid to their cured meat products, as it has a preservative quality also. To be safe, make sure that you consume plenty of ascorbic acid everyday. Vitamin C is associated with the lowering of heart disease incidence dramatically in clinical trials, as well.

I wish some of these studies would be done with grass fed animal products, without the preservatives, as in organic, grass fed pork. Too much to ask for, I guess. Most food co-ops sell these types of products, but I doubt if the risks are the same. Unfortunately, I'll have to continue to wonder.

A high fiber low fat diet comprised of fruts, vegetables, nuts, grains and seeds is the best diet. Keep away from junk foods, especially peanut butter, procesed sugar and chocolate. It sticks to the walls of your colon and you will need a stick of dinamite blow out your bowels. Drink at least 8 glases of water a day and 100% natural frute juices. Avoid fried foods and corn surup. Avoid red meats. If you have to eat meat, eat chicken and fish and beans as a meat substitue. Beans are high in protein and fiber. I notice when I shop at the super market that the majority of food that people have in their shopping cart is nothing but junk food.

Cancer can only exist is an acidic system. It cannot exist in an alcaline system.

Bull Hockey so much has changed in the past 60yrs. Its all about getting product to market for the least amount of money as possible. Most food products will have received a cocktail of chemicals before they reach the grocer. The bacon of today is only a facmile of the bacon of yesterday. Our systems have evolved, thank God for your Grandpa, in his day if the additive had more than 8 letters they didn't put it in the food, now you need to be a scientist even just to pronounce the name of the additive.

Ignore the facts, anonymous, and stick to your opinion. Then, compare your opinion to the huge increases in cancer, Diabetes, heart problems, depression, etc. as all increased many fold as the additives in food essentially began removing the nutritional values.

For everyone of your grandfather, there are dozens of other getting cancer, for example. The fact is 1 in 2 American men will have cancer during their lives and 38 percent of women will.

One in four will develop Diabetes, while 1 in 2 are pre-Diabetic.

I could go on but I find such is useless with people with closed, blocked mind. The only right thing you passed on is that you do not eat the garbage your grandfather does and eat only vegetables, hopefully most of them raw. Other than that, your comment only misleads and serves no worthwhile purpose or need for consideration.

If you cannot pronounce or do not know what the additive is, then do not eat the product. That is a basic rule of thumb. besides, why does food need "additives", such as toxic MSG, natural flavors when they have their own flavor to begin with, etc?
