Arkansas has largest Earthquake in 35 YEARS. New Madrid Fault - Accelerated By Gas Wells - Fracking ?!

Uncommon News

Residents of the small north-central Arkansas town of Greenbrier said Monday they're unsettled by the fact that they never know if or when the next earthquake is going to strike, especially after being woken up by the largest quake to hit the state in decades.

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded the quake at 11 p.m. Sunday, centered beneath the ground about four miles northeast of Greenbrier. It was the largest of more than 800 quakes to strike the area since September in what is now being called the Guy-Greenbrier earthquake swarm.

"You don't know what to expect. It's unnerving," said Corinne Tarkington, an employee at a local flower and gift shop. "I woke up last night to the sound of my house shaking."

What woke Tarkington was a magnitude 4.7 earthquake — the largest to hit the state in 35 years. No injuries or major damage have been reported, but the escalation in the severity of quakes in and around the small north-central Arkansas town has many residents on edge. Some said they're seeing gradual damage to their homes, such as cracks in walls and driveways.

US could reach debt limit by April 15: Treasury

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States is likely to hit its $14.29 trillion debt limit a little later than expected, the US Treasury said Tuesday, as lawmakers worked to avert a government shutdown.

"The Treasury Department now estimates that the United States will reach the debt limit between April 15, 2011, and May 31, 2011," senior Treasury official Mary Miller said.

If the ceiling is not raised, the United States would only have weeks before it runs out of cash to pay its bills, according to government estimates.

TSA Lies To Justify Illegal Train Station Grope-Down

Passengers were forced to enter train station by TSA goons who swarmed them on platform

Paul Joseph Watson
Prison Planet

The TSA has been caught in yet another act of deception after claiming that passengers who were subjected to an invasive pat down and bag search after getting off an Amtrak train in Savannah, Georgia earlier this month did not have to enter the station, when in fact according to firefighter Brian Gamble, TSA agents swarmed the platform as soon as passengers stepped off the train and ordered them inside the building.

“(Lt. Brian) Gamble, who also works part-time as a travel agent, tells AOL Travel News he was bringing a small group that included other firefighters and policemen to Savannah for a Valentine’s Day getaway. They were among 30 or 40 people getting off the train when he says TSA officers ordered everyone into the terminal.”

“They sent us all into a roped-off holding area and said ‘Y’all are going to be searched,’” Gamble says. “We were getting off the train. This didn’t make sense.”

We Can’t Just Compensate Free Trade’s Losers

Ian Fletcher
Activist Post

It is sometimes argued that although free trade has some victims, its benefits exceed its costs, so it is possible for its winners to compensate its losers out of their gains, everyone thereby coming out ahead in the end.

This is, in fact, the usual fallback position of mainstream economists once they admit that free trade has drawbacks. (They don't usually admit to civilians there are drawbacks, but press them even moderately hard and they'll usually 'fess up.)

It is sometimes even mischievously argued that if such compensation doesn't happen, any problems are due to society's failure to arrange it, and are therefore not the fault of free trade per se.

Hmm... Sounds like a perfect excuse.

G. Edward Griffin on Free Markets

Cassandra Anderson
Alt-Market

According to G. Edward Griffin, alternative markets ARE free markets. Alternative markets are an alternative to what? Controlled markets that prevent prosperity.

Free markets are ruled by consumer demand and producer supply. Major markets today are NOT free markets. They are ruled by small groups that have been given the power to intervene in the free exchange of supply and demand. Those who weild this power usually claim that they are acting on behalf of the greater good of society but, the reality is that, often, they serve hidden agendas that benefit themselves or those or those they covertly serve.

Monopolies exist because of governmental regulations and are characterized by a lack of competition in the marketplace. Monopolies can be broken by removing these regulations. Only then will upstart competitors be able to break the monopolies. This is simple, but not easy because most people still suffer under the illusion that government regulation is in the interest of the public.

US Supreme Court rules against corporate privacy

AFP

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The US Supreme Court Monday ruled that corporations do not enjoy the same rights to privacy as individuals, rejecting claims by AT&T that it should not have to disclose some emails and other documents.

In a unanimous 8-0 decision, the court ruled that the "personal" exception to the Freedom of Information Act, did not apply to corporations, despite being labeled as "persons" under the law. A ninth justice, Elena Kagan, rescused herself from the case.

"Certainly, if the chief executive officer of a corporation approached the chief financial officer and said, 'I have something personal to tell you', we would not assume the CEO was about to discuss company business," wrote Chief Justice John Roberts for the court.

US warship headed to Libya: officials

WASHINGTON (AFP) - A US warship with hundreds of Marines on board headed towards Libya on Tuesday, defense officials said, as US and European allies sought to pile pressure on embattled leader Moamer Khadafi.

The USS Kearsarge, an amphibious assault ship accompanied by two other naval vessels, was expected to pass through the Suez Canal soon from the Red Sea, two officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told AFP.

"We're certainly moving assets to be closer (to Libya)," one of the defense officials said.

The Kearsarge amphibious ready group, with about 800 marines, a fleet of helicopters and medical facilities, could support humanitarian efforts as well as military operations.

Libya no-fly zone would require bombing raids: US

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Enforcing a no-fly zone over Libya would first require bombing the north African nation's air defense systems, top US commander General James Mattis warned Tuesday.

A no-fly zone would require removing "the air defense capability first," Mattis, the head of Central Command, told a Senate hearing.

"It would be a military operation," the general said.

The United States and its allies are weighing possible military action, including a no-fly zone, to stop Libya's Moamer Kadhafi from using his forces to crush mounting opposition.

5 Proposals to Combat 'Global Warming' That Should Make Us All Cringe

Taxing the air we exhale, rationing human necessities, a global one-child policy, geoengineering (high-altitude chemical spraying), and now nuclear war have all been proposed to combat global warming.  Have climate theorists lost their marbles, or just their humanity?

There has not been much middle ground found between global warming believers and the "it's a hoax" crowd. I started as a believer after watching An Inconvenient Truth I struggled to even look into the alternative view because the establishment had so successfully made the deniers seem insane.

However, having now done extensive research, I can attest that the "hoax" crowd has just as much, if not more, compelling evidence on their side as believers do. Furthermore, most global warming deniers won't disagree that the climate is changing or shifting in some noticeable way, only that man-made CO2 is not the primary cause.

This article is not intended to debate the questions surrounding the man-made global warming theory, but rather the proposed "solutions." Most believers genuinely care about the environment and view deniers as selfish "takers" who care not for mother nature. This is not the case at all.  In fact, I would argue that most deniers feel just as passionately about environmental issues as believers.  The difference seems to be that deniers focus their energy on tangible and measurable problems in the environment like water, air and soil pollution, GMO food, excessive pharmaceuticals, chemical spraying, and results from oil spills and gas fracking to name a few.

Bernanke warns on oil price 'threat'

© AFP/File Fred Dufour
AFP

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke on Tuesday warned "sustained rises" in oil prices could potentially threaten US growth and spark dangerous price rises, as he eyed the turmoil in the Middle East.

Bernanke told Congress he still believed unrest in Libya and elsewhere in the oil-rich region would result in "temporary" and "modest" increases in US prices, but acknowledged greater risks remain.

"The most likely outcome is that the recent rise in commodity prices will lead to, at most, a temporary and relatively modest increase in US consumer price inflation," the central bank chief told lawmakers.

"That said, sustained rises in the prices of oil and other commodities would represent a threat both to economic growth and to overall price stability."

He added there was a particular risk from unrest pushing up expectations of future price rises.

Financial terrorism suspected in 2008 economic crash

Editor's Note: My eyes are burning from this smoke screen.

Bill Gertz --The Washington Times

Evidence outlined in a Pentagon contractor report suggests that financial subversion carried out by unknown parties, such as terrorists or hostile nations, contributed to the 2008 economic crash by covertly using vulnerabilities in the U.S. financial system.

The unclassified 2009 report “Economic Warfare: Risks and Responses” by financial analyst Kevin D. Freeman, a copy of which was obtained by The Washington Times, states that “a three-phased attack was planned and is in the process against the United States economy.”

While economic analysts and a final report from the federal government's Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission blame the crash on such economic factors as high-risk mortgage lending practices and poor federal regulation and supervision, the Pentagon contractor adds a new element: “outside forces,” a factor the commission did not examine.

The DOJ's creeping war on whistle-blowers

Last April, the DOJ served a subpoena on New York Times reporter James Risen, demanding to know his source for a story he published in his 2006 book regarding a "reckless" and horribly botched CIA effort to infiltrate Iran's nuclear program.   That subpoena had originally been served but was then abandoned by the Bush DOJ, but its revitalization by the Obama administration was but one of many steps taken to dramatically expand the war on whistleblowers being waged by the current President, who ran on a platform of "protecting whistleblowers":

Food prices to skyrocket, riots could follow, suggests USDA

When the upswing in commodity prices eventually makes its way throughout the food system in mid-to-late 2011, food prices are sure to spike with levels potentially reaching those of 2008, announced U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) economist Ephraim Leibtag at the agency's annual Outlook Forum. And if conditions escalate rapidly, there is also the potential for food riots and other civil unrest.

The USDA is predicting a 3.5 percent increase in food prices in 2011, which is about twice the overall inflation rate but less than the 2008 increase, according to a recent Reuters report. In 2008, food prices rose 5.5 percent, which represents the highest increase since 1990. But the possibility of food prices dramatically rising in 2011 like they did in 2008 is a definite possibility.

"Given that it's still earlier in the year, I'm prone to be conservative on the side of the forecast," said Leibtag. "It's a possibility," he added, concerning the likelihood of massive inflation in food costs like was seen in 2008.

Perimeter Security and the Future of North American Integration

Dana Gabriel
Be Your Own Leader

Out of the ashes of the defunct Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP), the U.S. has pursued simultaneous bilateral agendas with both Canada and Mexico, in an effort to further deepen North American economic and security integration. While the NAFTA framework remains intact, a recent announcement by Canada and the U.S. to work towards a trade and security perimeter agreement without Mexico, has some questioning the future of the whole trilateral process.

Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Lawrence Cannon recently addressed the Council on Foreign Relations where he emphasized Canada-U.S. bilateral achievements and called for greater integration between the two countries. In his speech, Minister Cannon praised the February 4, Beyond the Border declaration issued by President Obama and Prime Minister Harper as, “a bold new step, intended to bring our economic competitiveness and our security perimeter to a higher level of joint commitment.” In regards to shared engagement in the hemisphere, he added, “Our Americas strategy is focused on promoting prosperity, democracy and security.” Cannon acknowledged, “We are working with the U.S. to help Mexico strengthen its police forces and judicial institutions to combat transnational, organized crime.” He also added, “The problems on the U.S. southern border are real but fundamentally different from those on your northern border.” Some have blamed the failure of the SPP on the trilateral approach and believe that it also prevented more meaningful Canada-U.S. bilateralism in areas of security, trade and energy.

US cites Baidu, PirateBay, others in copyright piracy

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The US Monday named leading Chinese search engine Baidu and Swedish torrent download site Pirate Bay in a list of the world's top online and physical markets for pirated and counterfeit goods.

The US Trade Representative said the two websites, a host of others and more than 20 physical markets, like the widely known Silk Market in Beijing and Panthip Plaza in Bangkok, as "notorious" centers openly selling or enabling the sale of counterfeit or pirated goods, from software to industrial products to live sports television broadcasts.

While no action was threatened in the USTR's first global "Review of Notorious Markets", it said the markets were targets for copyright enforcement efforts and could be included in individual country reports on enforcement efforts.

Real ID Mandatory State Compliance by May 11, 2011?

Avalon
The Intel Hub Radio

In what could only be described as a Masterpiece in Incrementalism, the long awaited Real ID System is now mandating that states be in compliance by May 11, 2011.
The REAL ID Act of 2005 requires state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards to meet federal standards by a certain date in order to be accepted for federal purposes. What is that date?  All 56 U.S. jurisdictions received an initial extension through Dec. 31, 2009, from the secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
In December 2009, the secretary issued a statement to waive that deadline.  States must now be in full-compliance by May 11, 2011. What is the penalty for non-compliance?  Residents in non-compliant states will not be able to use their driver’s license to board commercial aircraft, gain access to federal facilities or enter nuclear power plants.– National Conference of State Legislatures

US voices concern to China over media crackdown

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The US ambassador to Beijing, Jon Huntsman, voiced "deep concerns" to the Chinese authorities over a harsh crackdown on foreign journalists, a US official said Monday.

"We are deeply concerned that the Chinese authorities did not protect the safety and property of these journalists, and we expect them to hold the perpetrators accountable," State Department spokesman Philip Crowley.

Crowley added that Huntsman had contacted his counterparts in the Chinese foreign ministry to express "our deep concerns" over the incidents.

Huntsman met with several American and other China-based foreign journalists who "had their equipment seized, were illegally detained, harassed, and at least in one case, severely beaten," he said.

BP, Others Ask Judge To Dismiss Gulf Oil Spill Claims

Yahoo/AP

NEW ORLEANS – BP and other companies sued over the massive Gulf oil spill are asking a federal judge to dismiss many of the claims filed by businesses and people who say they have been harmed by the disaster.

U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier set Monday as a deadline for BP, Transocean and other companies to file motions to dismiss claims over last year's deadly Deepwater Horizon rig explosion and the spill that followed it.

Rig owner Transocean says many plaintiffs' claims should be dismissed because they allegedly failed to follow the terms of the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 and filed suit before properly presenting their claims to BP.

Obama thanks Harper over Libya

© AFP Patrick Baz
AFP

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US President Barack Obama Monday thanked Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper for clamping sanctions on Libya's Moamer Kadhafi, and both leaders vowed to support sweeping change in the Middle East.

Obama and Harper spoke a day after Harper said Canada was freezing assets of Kadhafi and his family, and called on him to resign, joining an international clamor against the long-time ruler now teetering under a widespread revolt.

The US and Canadian leaders, who met in Washington earlier this month, agreed on the need to "deter additional acts of violence by the Kadhafi regime," the White House said in a statement.

The War Party’s Atrocity Porn

William Grigg
Lew Rockwell

"This is a massacre," the frantic Libyan woman, speaking by telephone while cowering in her apartment in Tripoli, told CNN's Anderson Cooper.

"I hope you know that people around the world are watching and praying and wanting to do something," Anderson told her, as if he were a stage prompter hinting at a performer's next line. Whether or not she had been given a copy of the script, the caller performed as expected: "[T]he first step [is to] make Libya a no-fly zone. If you make Libya a no-fly zone, no more mercenaries can come in.... There needs to be action. How much more waiting, how much more watching, how much more people dying?"

It's entirely possible, perhaps even likely, that the subject of Cooper's interview was simply a terrified but resolute woman who risked her life to describe the violence devouring her country amid the death throes of Khadaffy's police state.

It's likewise possible that her call for international action to impose a no-fly zone was a desperate plea from a victim, rather than an act of media ventriloquism in which an anonymous figure endorsed the first plank of a military campaign proposed by the same neo-conservative kriegsbund that manipulated us into Iraq.
