Cancer Feeds on Fructose, America’s Number One Source of Calories

High-fructose corn syrup is the primary source of calories in the United States. In addition to containing mercury, a known carcinogen, cancer cells actually feed on high-fructose corn syrup after it is metabolized by the liver. A new study, published in the Expert Opinion on Therapeutic Targets, examined the link between refined sugar and cancer. The results add further evidence to the reports of many health experts and scientific studies that have drawn the connection between excess sugar consumption and the development of cancer.

The researchers highlighted the numerous ways in which fructose directly contributes to cancer risk and other health problems, including:
  • DNA damage
  • Inflammation
  • Altered cellular metabolism
  • Increased production of free radicals

According to Lewis Cantley, director of the Cancer Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center at Harvard Medical School, as much as 80 percent of all cancers are “driven by either mutations or environmental factors that work to enhance or mimic the effect of insulin on the incipient tumor cells.”

Similar research published in the journal Cancer Research found that the way in which sugar is metabolized stimulates cancer growth. The researchers reported:

"Importantly, fructose and glucose metabolism are quite different … These findings show that cancer cells can readily metabolize fructose to increase proliferation."
What is even more concerning is that the scientists conducting the research used pancreatic cancer cells, widely considered to be the most deadly form of cancer. The discovery was monumental because not only did the researchers prove that tumor cells feed on sugar (glucose), but the tumor cells used fructose for cell division in order to speed up the growth and spread of the cancer. Fructose consumption actually led to a massive increase in tumor cell growth and proliferation way beyond that of glucose.

This cancer-feeding fructose is what the majority of Americans are consuming on a daily basis, to the point where high-fructose corn syrup is their number one source of calories. Even children are consuming excessive amounts of sugar in juice boxes, candy, and even ‘healthy’ sports beverages. The amount is so extreme that the average American consumes around 150 grams of sugar each day; whereas, many experts believe that the number should be around 15 grams per day or lower to prevent cancer.

The ubiquitous nature of fructose is so apparent in the food supply that it can be found in one form or another in 5 of the top 10 sources of calories in America, according to a USDA report. As cancer rates continue to explode, it is vital that dietary changes are made involving the emission of fructose from the global food supply. Natural sweeteners like Stevia contain 0 calories, and have been found to prevent and reverse diseases like diabetes. It is time we revolutionize the food supply and utilize natural sweeteners as tools to reduce cancer and obesity rates worldwide, naturally.

Boycott all products with high fructose corn syrup, especially soda and juices that add it, and you will feel much better.

Thanks for the tip.

We need to get the word out about High fructose corn syrup. The FDA has allowed it's name to be changed to corn sugar

Fruit is also major source of fructose (another name for fructose is "fruit sugar"). Should we stop eating fruit to prevent cancer? This article is pure idiocy.

ANY source of fructose (including fruit) can be detrimental to your health.

Check out the video and you'll never look at fructose (even from fruit) the same way again.

They're clearly talking about CORN SYRUP (Fructose) not the natural stuff.

Don't mean to be rude, but if I were you, I'd stay off of "SO YOU THINK YOU'RE SMARTER THAN A FIFTH GRADER".

Yuk Yuk...

I think if you dump fruit sugar together with HFGC there's bound to be something wrong there. Fruit is essential to our health, but its the extraction of separate elements in the fruit to be taken separately that constitutes the danger. Drinking concentrated fruit juice without the accompanying 'body' of the fruit (fibre, etc) may cause trouble. AS for HFCS, a definite no-no.

I am sorry hartaflame but fruit is not manmade. I understand what your saying, however if high fructose corn syrup had never been developed, fruit would have never been a problem. But now it just adds to the already overloaded body, and in that case would be bad. Anytime man takes and concentrates plant material, we eventually find out it is actually poison. The whole plant is needed as buffers for the essential ingredient that is desired.

To author---I am a bit confused by the interchange of sugar and fructose in your article. Are you saying that they both cause cancer at the same rates and then together it increases exponentially? Sugar has been around and used since before America was a country. Cancer has increased rapidly only in the last 100 yrs or so. Granted our intake of sugar has increased as well and could be a contributing factor.

Anecdotally speaking I have been 240 to 280 lbs most of my life until we cut the HFCS. Now for two yrs or so I am around 190.

I have tried stevia. Hard to bake with, and for me has a nasty aftertaste similar to aspartame.

We use raw sugar almost exclusively. Brown sugar for baking.

When I was a kid back in the '50s, candy bars, soft drinks etc. were a treat that you didn't get all that often, and of course the sweets of the day were made with sugar, not HFCS. But even then, I think, we were consuming a lot more sweet stuff than had been the case further back in time, say in my parents' day. Nowadays I think it has gone just about as far as it can go, with some people drinking soft drinks instead of water, and having candy bars etc. more than once a day, instead of once every few days.

What really is insidious, of course, is the amount of sweetener concealed in things we don't think of as sweet, such as ketchup. The only solution is to look at the ingredients listed on the label, and to not buy anything that contains any of the following: soybean oil, canola oil, cottonseed oil, safflower oil, MSG, natural flavors, flavorings, aspartame, and of course high fructose corn syrup (I'm sure I forgot some things---at any rate, I don't buy anything with ingredients that might be questionable).

The point I make with the above list is that it's not just sweeteners that we have to pay attention to. Our food supply is badly contaminated with all sorts of bad stuff, to the point that I have to believe that this is all deliberate.

Suggest people consider natural versus man-made, organic versus inorganic, unrefined versus refined, natural immunity versus vaccines, Lugol's iodine versus potassium iodide, Vit B17 versus cyanide, selenium yeast versus selenium oxide, Celtic ocean sea salt versus table salt, Vitamin D2 Versus Vitamin D3....

Before GMO crap even corn syrup wasn't bad for you. But now of course it is poison. Ban the GMO's and all seeds from GMO then our country can go back to living healthier & happier. Also making money since MOST countries do not want the GMO toxic waste, so they don't buy from us! They are all disgusting Ho's for corporations in this country but WE THE PEOPLE can change that! Yes start with what you buy, NO corn, NO soy, NO Canola crap, NO Safflower, NO palm oils. Pretty much NOTHING in a box or bag!

hartaflame.....Seriously? It's all or nothing? Have you ever heard the expression *throwing the baby out with the bathwater*? The fructose in fruit is NOT the same as HFCS. There are other components of fruit you're completely ignoring, like fiber and enzymes for starters. To stop eating fruit because it has a natural component that is related to what's in a highly toxic manmade product is...well, sorry, but it's just plain stupid. Now, if you're eating a grocery bag full of fruit at every sitting, then you clearly have other issues that need addressing. But the normal intake of fruit is completely controllable, whereas the intake of HFCS is NOT, unless you never go out to eat and buy only raw ingredients and cook EVERYTHING from scratch...something most people do not have the time to do when two full time incomes are required for survival.

HFCS is in just about everything anymore, including things you would NEVER expect to see it in, like hot dogs. The reason it's in everything is because it causes you to eat more than you would if it wasn't there. The reason it causes obesity is layered...from the way it metabolizes to the way it causes you to overeat to the fact that it's virtually inescapable in a highly processed food supply. When was the last time you could say all that about a bowl of fruit?
