We cant all live in RVs (like Cousin Eddie) in todays urban or suburban society. This guy's encampment is a bit of an eyesore. Without running water or fire protection, it may not be as healthy (for him) as we think it ought to be. On the other hand he is surrounded by his own 36 acres, and he is of age. Where someone has (say) 10 acres, is hidden from view, and has no impact outside his acreage he ought to be able to claim an exemption from the uniform building, fire, and health codes.

it's his land.

...and "codes"/"ordinances" are mainly for government income.

yet another example of how this country is no longer free...we are all slaves.

So if a catastrophe happened that wiped out many homes would we all have to leave our land for living in wood shelters or mud huts? Really this is a government scheme for money. It's his land and he should be able to live however the hell he wants whether its in a camper or in a teepee.

There are two kinds of people, those who want to be left alone and thoses who wont leave them alone.

Damn Government. They don't care about anyones health. They just are not making any money off this guy. The horse and the dog don't care about a septic tank, they shit in the woods, so why can't he if he wants to? It is his land if he pays his taxes on it who cares how he lives?
Damn Government

Wonder which government/corporation is after his land... plans must be afoot for some type of a new development! Perhaps this man has refused to sell his land - so now he is being forced off it.

Without building and zoning codes, your nieghbor could make his wigwam out of car hoods and old couches. Then for a living..he could tan hides in the front yard, and junk out motorcycles in the back yard. Why not. It is his yard....riiiight.

In 1999, 13 miles off the main highway, then 2 miles from that dirt road up a jeep trail in the mountains of southern Colorado, I built an outhouse and a small cabin. One day the building inspector paid me a call. My first question was "How in the hell did you find me?" He said he got lost looking for another remote site. Then he informed me that outhouses are illegal anywhere in the state of Colorado, and my cabin was too small for human habitation. I asked him if it was legal to sleep in a tent and poop under a tree, and he admitted that no law prevented that. That was when I realized America was no longer a free country.

so how long has this guy been living there,?
does he have rich yuppie type neighbors who would want his land?
how come the amish can live close to the land, but he cant?
does that county have some project that they would want the land for??
all we hear from the govment environmentalists of living green and close the to the land yet this guy is doing that, and look what happens, sigh, so much for small carbon print eh,

this episode pretty much shows everyone, you can own land and still be run off of it,

welcome to the united states socialist republic (ussr) people,

Leave this man alone. You mess with his rights, you mess with all of our rights as Americans.

I think we've all had it with nanny government telling us what to do, trying to control the food we eat, the medicines we can take, the color we can or can't paint our own homes and messing with our junk and sexually molesting our kids at airports.

One of the planks of communism is to do away with private property ownership.

We can either bend over and take it, or not.

I just want to know where in the world America's heros are.
Where are the men to stand up against this evil?
We need a hero now!
I think little old ladies are doing more than most right now. At least Code Pink are not sitting on their asses and waiting for someone else to take care of things.

Speaking as a land developer/builder I can tell you without question, that this is merely a ploy by a businessman with political influence wanting to aquire the 36 acres for a multimillion dollar development project... Whether it be residential, commercial, or industrial... if you're a developer, and you "persuade" a few politicians to "confiscate" that land, then *poof* re-zone it for whatever business venture is intended. There's literally 10's of millions of dollars to be made on that 36 acres, versus 1 "simple" man trying to live his life on his land HIS way. I see this kind of thing happen all the time and it is wrong. But money is a strong motivator and a powerful tool. It will win, in this instance.

WOW, this world and country in particular, get crazier and crazier with each passing moment! Who is this man hurting? NO ONE! But the Government is not making sufficient money off him, so they make comply to bogus rulez! Time to resist with the full force of freedom!

Anonymous said...

Its a good thing this man has to leave his land! He should have electricity and running water! If you say otherwise you're an extremist! And there is plenty of room for you at Gitmo!!

Anonymous said...

Get a gun and dont comply

Anonymous said...

It really doesn't matter where you chose to live the government requires their pay and since he doesn't not have electricity they can't tax him for the electricity No running water they can't tax him for that as well... so since the government is not receiving any funds from him it's pissing them off.

Google Tent cities USA - So it's ok for people to live in TENTS, in their cars, vans --but by God in the land of the 'FREE' - a man can't live how he wants to on his land? I too wonder what developer wants his land? What greedy council person is on the take? My grandma raised eight kids on a farm - OUTHOUSE/ one wood stove. They grew up (NOT druggies- or spoiled brats) but became a doctor, Navy nurse, editor, engineer. Leave the guy alone/ the way the country's going you all might be taking tips off this guy on how to SURVIVE.

Anonymous said...

This is absurd! I agree with the comment that a developer is interested in acquiring the land through the local government/politicians by 'stealing it' if he won't comply. It's not about safety or health reasons. What the hell did people do before sewers and electricity? Do you think the local politicians are kicking the Amish from their land? It's his land and he's an adult. He can live the way he wants. It might benefit the owner, however, to try and sell off a very small parcel to someone, maybe a group of investors or a philanthropist, or convert a few acres to a large vegetable garden for a co-op. Or maybe sell a few acres for a designated park where no one can build on. The funds could be used to install a septic tank and either remodel his modest RV or exchange for a mobile home/manufactured home, powered by green energy. I would hope that the local citizens would fully support him and voice their opinions at the local town meetings. The squeaky wheel gets the oil!

Anonymous said...

Thank God there are still some good red-blooded Americans who yet yearn for the freedom upon which this country was founded in the beginning...by extremists...who had no elect or indoor plumbing. The tyrannical government that would evict this decent man are the extremists. All who see this man as the extremist are the brainwashed lackeys who will follow government to hell and destruction.

MalikTous said...

I hope he sabotages any and all government effort to steal from him. It would serve the county right if all their effort ends up costing the originating politicians and agencies with no hope of recompense - they should even be barred from tapping tax revenue and forced to spend their personal funds. The I hope the victim blows town and resumes simple living elsewhere, thumbing his nose at those lousy administrative thieves.

Busy-bodies and do-gooders certainly don't believe in liberty. This man is hurting no one. He's on his own land. America, the "land of the free"? I don't think so. Not for a long time.

let him alone!! It's his land!

Let's say there's a little old lady who has two rottweilers in her fenced 1/8 acre back yard. The dogs can do their business anywhere, but just watch what happens if the lady does it. Up against the wall, grandma.

In our ancient and wise culture, humanure must be flushed by 5 gallons of fresh water into a pipe that leads to a sewer plant, where somehow the water is magically transformed into 'safe' water, and comes out of our tap. Meanwhile the offal from the two big dogs is absorbed into the earth and makes the grass greener. I wonder how long it will be before suburbia has animal waste ordinances...maybe they already do.

Ideally, a person should be able to do as he pleases on his own land, up to a point. But the longer a county has existed, the more cases come up of various kinds of aggravating wierdness going on, (people are always pushing the envelope) and the more ordinances fall into place. So this guy should sell out and go west. No one cares what you do on the mesa in New Mexico, for example. Or, migrate south to Mexico.

If he is not hurting anyone else and his land is paid for, he can live any damn way he wants. Shame on the city, county, or state for trying to get involved. He is a grown man and if he wants to live like they did 300 years ago, its his own choice

Anonymous said...

We can't all live in RVs? Ever heard of an RV Park? Yes, it's an eyesore, but that's a price we pay for freedom.

Anonymous said...

Freedom in the US is a lie, you are a slave to the one's working for all forms of government that produce nothing but steal your work to pay themselves and their own retirment while you have none.Governemnt will continue to steal everyone's work until the whole County has nothing left. Anyone individual who wants to produce a product or start a small business is put out of business before he starts by regulation, and now we can't even live.

Lets see, homeless people don't have running water, bathrooms, etc. They sleep on the street, under bridges, in the woods, and throw trash everywhere. They use the streets as public restrooms. What has the government done about this problem? Nothing!!! So A man has 36 acres, and is living by Henry David Thoreau's standards. and he is stepped on by the the local government. I expect nothing less from these miscreants.

This is "my" land and it will be my daughters land at some point and "nobody" is going to change that without getting hurt };o) Now, Im not saying they wont get Our" land but I am saying there going to get hurt taking it };o)

What state is Madison County in? How long has he lived on his 36 acres? No One should be allowed to take his land because of a land use dispute! Most areas with zoning regulations do not allow people living in RV's with outhouses. Although if he has been there a long time maybe he could be "grandfathered". How about a composting toilet, way cheaper than a septic system, and allowed in some areas.
I do sympathize with him, we should all be able to simplify our way of life, especially on 36 acres! I hope a compromise can be reached and that he stays on his land.

Unbelievable, Man is living on his own land, not hurting anyone.

In this economy he was ok with a roof over his head.

Now they are putting him off his own land and making him homeless .. I thought we live in the USA.

What is this nation coming to if we allow this to happen .. Is it poss to get a collection going to get him whatever the !~$!@#$#@ county says he must have to stay on his land?

I for one would gladly contribute to help him. I can't afford much but I could send $5 .. maybe if enough of us did that we could save this one guy. In the meantime perhaps someone could take these County folks and find them a good Proctologist to remove their heads from where they are stuck!

I would like to know what state this is happening in and where are the Christian folks from Alexander that are allowing thieves steal a man's land.
I am a land owner and have been since the age of 19, I am 55 now. If someone told me that I could not live on my land as I chose to and I owned it out right and my taxes were paid, I am affraid that I would be protecting my constitutional rights. First, post signs as the goverment does on their private land, stating tresspassers with be shot and killed. It is his right to protect his person and land he is not hurting anyone.
Get the goverment out of our homes, schools and churches. Get rid of the welfair and stop taxing us to death. Goverment has over stepped it's bounds.

It's this man's land, he pays his taxes. What is he supposed to do, park his RV on the side of the road, and get harassed by the police for doing so? Will they next seize his RV and leave him living on the street? The government ignores homeless families living on the street, they don't care about them, because they have nothing they can steal. This is the corrupt democrats in action, stealing from a man who is a US veteran, who sacrificed for his country. Now some connected rich guy wants his land for a steal, who will probably pay chump change for what is stolen land. If he was an illegal alien, the ACLU, or one of the corrupt lobbying groups would raise a stink, but a US citizen, a veteran of foreign wars, is robbed of what little he has. This is disgraceful. Where are our congressmen???

"Ultimately, we shouldn’t think about dealing WITH the economy, but with getting OUT of it. The next big question is: Are we young enough or strong enough -- or just determined enough -- to do without such things as cars and electricity? And then there’s the catch that in most of the US and Canada, and no doubt other countries, there are strict rules about residential standards: it’s generally illegal to live in anything except the conventional suburban-type house, and that includes modern electricity and modern plumbing. Obeying all those laws about residential standards means being right back in the old trap of spending huge amounts of money. In other words, it’s illegal NOT to spend money: that’s an interesting thought in terms of freedom, justice, and all the other political ideals we were supposed to believe in. Being away from paved roads has its advantages, though: building inspectors don’t want to spend an hour struggling through underbrush".

I had, with a partner, 80 acres in northern Arizona. While working on our road on our property by the established dirt road we were approached by a county vehicle on said road. It was a county inspector, heading towards another property. Said inspector stopped and began questioning us about our property. Apparently he had heard about our construction (could not be seen from road) and wanted to inspect. He was told no. We were told that he would return with a warrent and the sheriff. He was then asked for his identification, when he asked why (after implying that his vehicle "proved" who he was) he was told that people acting under color of law could be sued personally and that is what we intended to do. He left after making verbal threats and we never saw him again.

I say stay and start filing lawsuits. Do it yourself. One of the reasons the government acts criminally is because its full of lawyers which are the highest form of carrion feeders in North America.

If he has to leave his own land, this is no longer a free country; it's a communism where an individual has no rights to his or her own land. That said, instead of Madison County he should have settled in Hocking or Vinton County, or maybe even Gallia. Incidentally, Alexandria is _not_ in Madison County; it is in Licking County -- and beware of the speed trap!

Anonymous said...

Yeah, we better get out the flag on this one and defend this man. Come hell or high water he has the right to live on HIS LAND in however, he wants to live in it.

SO, as Americans we better get together and raise hell.
