Pardon me for putting it so bluntly but I get bent out of shape when I read comments like those made by Israeli Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz who called for a naval blockade of Iran within two to six months because, according to the article “Israel To Iran: Time’s Up”, sanctions have failed to convince the Islamic republic to abandon its nuclear weapons program.
It is assumed that a man in Steinitz position will know that a naval blockade of a country is an act of war. It is assumed that he also knows that Congress has the power to declare war in which the United States will become involved and not the Israeli’s Finance office. It is also assumed that Steinitz is aware that U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates is opposed to our young men and women in uniform committed to another major war in which the nation would lose more lives (in the interest of Israel).
Steinitz surmised that “[Israelis] need a clear deadline for Iran to become open for inspection otherwise the ramifications should be like [the U.S.] did with Cuba in 1962. The gall of Steinitz to equate the Cuban Missile Crisis (CMC) with Iran’s desires to harness nuclear technology. Perhaps, the Finance Minister should undertake some remedial courses in history to get his perspective straight.
The Cuban Missile Crisis occurred in 1962 when the Soviet Union, at the time, one of the two greatest military forces on earth, engaged in brinksmanship with the U.S., the other superpower of the day.
